Is he really the answer at Newcastle?

It’s been an interesting last two years for Darren Bent. The England international has been tracked by Newcastle United , but the news of a possible Bent transfer has created quite a debate as to whether the 29-year-old has lost the spark he had shown in previous seasons – despite suffering a number of injuries during his time at Villa Park.

Football FanCast put together a poll asking the readers if they think that a Darren Bent transfer would be a step backwards for Newcastle and 57 per cent disagreed with that claim. So could he be the answer to the Magpies’ problems?

Bent is without a doubt a talented player – something he proved during his time at Sunderland where he scored 32 goals in 58 appearances. He also drew quite some attention in an England shirt, playing 13 times and netting four goals. He is a striker with impressive technique and good positioning, which allows him to easily end up in the right place, at the right time. He proved that after finishing the 2009-2010 season as the Premier League’s third top scorer with 24 goals. Bent in his pomp could prove to be useful for the Toon as the team only scored 45 goals in 38 Premier League games last season.

[cat_link cat=”newcastle-united” type=”list”]

Bent left for Villa in January 2011, after scoring eight goals for the Black Cats, and netted nine more for the Villans as they finished in ninth place. The next year he scored the exact same amount of goals in the Premier League but suffered a severe injury that made him miss the rest of the season since February. Injuries do take their toll on footballers both physically and mentally and can influence the rest of their career, Bent for example only managed to score three goals last season, which equates to 0.19 goals per match. Villa finished just five points away from relegation and he lost his spot to an impressive Christian Benteke. This bad year and his history of injuries is something that the Magpies will have to deal with should the striker returns to the North.

Nevertheless, when a team wants to sign a certain player the first question is always: “How much?” According to the Daily Telegraph, Aston Villa’s price on Bent equals to £8million but the Toon want to drop it down to £5million. The money could be described as too much for a player that has suffered a severe leg injury and has failed to improve ever since leaving Sunderland. Of course right now we live in a period of financial turmoil that has not changed managements’ ways of dealing with transfers, as proven by the latest Gareth Bale saga and the mythical £100million touted to be coming from Real Madrid.

This possible transfer doesn’t only hold something for the club but also for the player himself. As a former Sunderland player Bent will be greeted with expletives from disappointed and frustrated Black Cats’ fans if he joins their local rivals Newcastle. On October 29 2011, the 29-year-old striker played his first match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and got booed every single time he got a touch on the ball. Now we could all assume that all that jeering would be doubled if he joins the Newcastle. Two years ago, the Aston Villa striker told the Daily Mail that he respects the Sunderland fans and that he owes them a lot. If he moves to Newcastle then what he said back then would count for nothing.

Truth is though; this transfer could be described as much needed from both sides. After failing to sign Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis, the Magpies need to bring a name quickly as Joe Kinnear, Newcastle’s new Director of Football, has not convinced the fans on his transfer abilities. We asked our readers if they thought the appointment of Kinnear was a mistake and an overwhelming 83 per cent agreed.

Bent would be a good solution as he has shown his worth in the past and managed to impress many sides, it’s no coincidence that Fulham are also interested in him. The striker wants another chance and if he joins the Toon he will be very aware that this could quite possibly be his last chance at glory. This would definitely be his last opportunity to be part of Roy Hodgson’s England side at the World Cup finals.

There is a lot more left in the tank for Bent and he could definitely bounce back and help Newcastle forget about their disappointing last season – hopefully resulting in a higher spot in the Premier League and a return to Europe.

Moyes has ‘good news’ for West Ham fans

Speaking to the media before West Ham United’s clash with Liverpool, manager David Moyes has now sent a message to Irons supporters detailing ‘good news’.

The Lowdown: West Ham men out…

Moyes, for the majority of this campaign, has to cope without colossal centre-half Angelo Ogbonna following the Italian’s steady rehabilitation from knee surgery.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-3/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Hammers have also been without various options at full-back as of late with Vladimir Coufal, Aaron Cresswell, Ryan Fredericks and Arthur Masuaku all missing action recently.

However, sharing news on the latter duo, Moyes has now sent a positive message to supporters before West Ham’s clash with Liverpool this afternoon.

The Latest: Moyes sends message…

Speaking to the press (via whufc.com), the Scotsman claimed that Fredericks and Masuaku are recovering well from their respective injuries.

“Like everybody, we’ve got a few injuries and a few players out, but we’ve also got some coming back as well hopefully.

“Ryan Fredericks is doing a bit better and so is Arthur [Masuaku]. We’ve got some good news on that side.

“We’ve got a concern about [Tomáš] Souček because of his stitches in his head, so that’s something we’re concerned about, but we’re probably no different from any other Club in the Premier League – we’ve got some injuries.”

The Verdict: Good news…

News of both full-backs ‘doing a bit better’ certainly comes as positive with West Ham now gearing up for the final stretch 2021/2022.

This run of matches will make or break Moyes’ season as the Irons maintain their Europa League push as well as continue to fight for Champions League qualification.

Moyes will need every option available, especially with the potential for mounting fixtures.

Celtic: Frimpong attracting summer interest

Former Celtic right-back Jeremie Frimpong is attracting significant interest ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by German media outlet Sport1, who claim that both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, as well as some of the bigger clubs in England and Spain, are keeping a very close eye on the Bayer Leverkusen defender ahead of a potential move for the 21-year-old at the end of the season.

The report goes on to state that Leverkusen would demand a fee of at least €30m (£25m) in order to part with the Netherlands U21 international this summer, however, given the fact that Frimpong’s current deal at the BayArena runs until the summer of 2025, the Bundesliga side are not desperate to sell the defender.

Postecoglou will be ruing Frimpong’s sale

While hindsight is a wonderful thing, Peter Lawwell’s decision to sanction the £9.9m sale of Frimpong back in January of 2021 appears as if it is a call that Ange Postecoglou will currently be ruing.

Indeed, the £33m-rated dynamo has proven over his 23 Bundesliga appearances this season that he would have been a key player under the 56-year-old Bhoys boss – scoring one goal, registering six assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as helping his side keep four clean sheets and making an average of 1.3 key passes per game.

Furthermore, while it has been rumoured that Celtic did include a sell-on clause in the £25k-per-week right-back’s transfer to Leverkusen – meaning the Hoops could be in line for a portion of the fee the German side receive for the Dutchman – should Lawwell have held fire on the sale of Frimpong until this coming summer, the Hoops could well have been in line for an injection of cash similar to the one received from the £25m departure of Kieran Tierney.

As such, Postecoglou will undoubtedly be regretting the club’s decision to part with the 21-year-old – who Simon Rolfes claimed has “huge potential,” Rudi Voller dubbed “lively” and Neil Lennon claimed is “incredible” – prior to his arrival at Parkhead last summer, as not only has the Greek-Australian been deprived of working with an exceptionally talented player but also a potentially summer-defining sale.

Everton’s 3 worst players v Wolves

Everton fell to another Premier League defeat on Sunday afternoon, losing 1-0 at home to Wolves.

Conor Coady was the matchwinner for the visitors early in the second half, with Jonjoe Kenny seeing red late on after two quick bookings.

The Transfer Tavern have used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst outfield performers were for the home side at Goodison Park, with these three players losing possession on 31 occasions, losing 13 duels and failing to have a shot on goal.

Jonjoe Kenny – 6.6/10

Kenny, who was sent off for two yellow cards late on, struggled throughout at Goodison Park. The defender lost the ball on 11 occasions, was second-best in five of his 10 duels and was unsuccessful with four of his six attempted long balls.

He committed four fouls and was comfortably the worst of the three centre-backs with a match rating of 6.6/10.

Seamus Coleman – 6.6/10

Next up is Coleman, who also ended with a match rating of 6.6/10. The experienced right-back didn’t attempt a cross all afternoon and gave the ball away on 12 occasions.

He was also second-best in one of his three duels and made just one tackle all afternoon, failing to record any interceptions.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 6.6/10

Last up, also with a match rating of 6.6/10, was Doucoure, with the midfielder failing to make an interception or clearance all afternoon while committing three fouls.

Doucoure also lost the ball eight times, lost seven duels and was unsuccessful with all of his attempted crosses and long balls.

Sunderland must unleash Nathan Broadhead

Sunderland will be looking to extend their five-game unbeaten run in League One as they travel to face Lincoln City on Saturday.

The Black Cats have won three of their last four games and have the chance to head into the international break on a high with another three points this weekend.

They beat Crewe Alexandra 2-0 at the Stadium of Light last time out as Dan Neil and Patrick Roberts both came off the bench to score, which could see them force their way into the team against the Imps.

Game-changer

One player who Alex Neil must unleash from the start alongside the pair is wide forward Nathan Broadhead. The club have reportedly been monitoring his fitness this week in the build-up to the game, and Neil must select him in the starting XI if he is available to play.

The Athletic journalist Patrick Boyland previously lauded the young attacker’s form at the Stadium of Light, tweeting: “Nathan Broadhead excelling at Sunderland. Regular competitive games making world of difference but too good for League One really.”

The reporter added: A lot to like. Mobile, finishes well, can play across the front line.”

The 23-year-old has the quality to be a game-changer for the Black Cats, as he has shown that he can find the net at an impressive rate. Boyland believes that the forward is too good for the third tier and his goalscoring record from out wide backs that up, with five goals in nine starts and 0.8 key passes per game.

Broadhead has scored six goals in his last seven matches for Sunderland in all competitions, which proves that he can change games by finding the back of the net. He could also come in at the perfect time after a disappointing performance from one of his team-mates last weekend.

Lynden Gooch started out wide on the right against Crewe but struggled badly. As per SofaScore, he only completed 16 passes and failed to complete a single chance as he lost four of his seven duels. He lacked the ability to make a difference in the final third, which is why he must be axed in favour of Broadhead.

Neil must select the on-loan winger to play instead of the American, as the statistics suggest that the 23-year-old would be a major upgrade to the starting XI. If he is not 100% fit, then he would still be a terrific option to bring off the bench as a substitute to potentially win the game for Sunderland.

AND in other news, Moyes flop who’s “like Eden Hazard” has seen his value rise by £14.4m after leaving Sunderland…

Sunderland must sign teenager Stones

League One outfit Sunderland have reportedly registered an interest in 18-year-old Guiseley striker Josh Stones, with the Black Cats trailing league rivals Wigan Athletic.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, the Wearside outfit are keen on the non-league sensation, who is also part of the England schoolboy set-up, but face competition from both Wigan and Scottish giants Rangers.

The young Englishman has scored 21 times in 13 games for the National League North side’s youth team this season whilst making 15 appearances for the first-team scoring once.Â

The striker signed first-team forms with Guiseley in October but could be lured away from the West Yorkshire club this summer.

Sunderland must sign Stones

Having seen Jermain Defoe retire this week after a brief second stint proved unsuccessful, whilst there are no guarantees that loanee Nathan Broadhead will sign permanently, the Black Cats will undoubtedly be looking to add a striker to their ranks this summer.

Granted, if the Wearside club were to sign Stones, it would be incredibly unlikely that manager Alex Neil would throw the youngster into the first-team mix straight away, but there is definitely bags of potential there.

Having scored a ridiculous tally of goals for Guiseley’s youth side as well as impressing in the National League North, there is no doubt that the striker is ready to make the next step up, and joining Sunderland’s youth ranks could be exactly what the 18-year-old needs to continue his development.

It’s still uncertain as to what status of a club the Black Cats will be in the summer with the League One outfit now sat outside of the playoff positions in seventh after Sheffield Wednesday beat Cheltenham Town 4-1 yesterday.

With seven games to secure a playoff spot, Neil’s side face a crucial couple of weeks which will certainly factor the pedigree of talent that they can recruit in the summer.

Moreover, as Wigan lead the race for Stones’ signature, the Latics are also on course for a return to the Championship, with Leam Richardson’s team three points clear of third-placed MK Dons in second with two games in hand.

Although the Wearsiders are trailing in the hunt for the 18-year-old’s signature, the North-East club must continue to pursue bringing the Guiseley man to the Stadium of Light, with the striker already showing glimpses of exciting potential.

Tottenham eye imminent Black agreement

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing yet another upgrade for their academy crop as news emerges on promising midfielder Leo Black.

The Lowdown: N17 youth prospering…

There has been no shortage of very exciting starlets coming through the ranks at N17 over past seasons, perhaps most notably and recently the likes of Oliver Skipp, Dane Scarlett and Troy Parrott.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

That being said, Tottenham are apparently always on the lookout for talents outside of Hotspur Way who they can then bring into the set up and nurture into future stars.

England youth internationals are allegedly in high-demand at Spurs, like winger Samuel Amo-Ameyaw for instance, who has also received a scholarship contract from the club amid comparisons to Jadon Sancho (Football Insider).

Now, as per FI, it appears Tottenham have set their sights on yet another rising star.

The Latest: Spurs submit Black offer…

According to the outlet, Spurs have now submitted a two-year scholarship contract offer for England Under-16 midfielder Black.

It is also believed that Tottenham want a deal done ‘in the coming weeks’ as they seek to add yet more top talents for their academy ahead of this summer.

The Verdict: Exciting times at youth level…

Given Spurs’ moves being made behind-the-scenes for some of England’s most promising emerging talents, Lilywhites supporters may want to keep an eye out for yet more prospects breaking through in the next couple of seasons.

It remains to be seen which name will follow in the footsteps of Scarlett, Skipp and Parrott, but it will certainly be one to keep an eye on as Spurs also plan for the future.

Sunderland player ratings vs Gillingham

Sunderland had to rely on a last-gasp winner from Everton loanee Nathan Broadhead in order to win 1-0 and take all three points against Gillingham.

It was a game that Alex Neil’s team completely dominated at the Stadium of Light, recording 80% possession and 25 shots on goal, but they were pretty wasteful at times going forward, and The Transfer Tavern have used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who their three worst performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) were on the day.

Could these men be looking over their shoulders regarding their place in the XI?

Corry Evans

Admittedly joint with Anthony Patterson in terms of overall rating (6.9), Evans ranks in third here given the goalkeeper’s clean sheet.

The captain lost out on five of his duels in total, and also failed to record a single shot on target, dribble, clearance, interception or key pass, while he was guilty of giving the ball away on six separate occasions.

Luke O’Nien

With a 6.7 rating, O’Nien was the Wearside club’s second-worst performer.

The central midfield player was subbed off for Elliot Embleton in the 68th minute, after making little impact going forward.

He was guilty of missing a big chance, and was off target with both of his efforts on goal, while he also made no dribbles or key passes, and lost possession a total of 17 times.

Ross Stewart

It certainly was not Stewart’s best game for the Black Cats, as he recorded just a 6.0 rating.

The striker was perhaps starved of quality service at times, but he did miss one big chance, and was off target with both of his shots.

He also made no successful dribbles or key passes, and lost the ball six times in total, as Broadhead came on to save the day.

Celtic launch approach to sign 18-goal striker in first Nancy signing

Celtic are now reportedly in pole position to sign a key attacking addition for Wilfried Nancy, having already made their first approach.

Nancy wants Celtic to sign "personality" in January

There would have been no one more relieved than Nancy when Celtic picked up the first victory of his tenure against Aberdeen last time out. The Frenchman eased the pressure and now has the task of picking up back-to-back wins when his side travel to face Livingston on Saturday.

With the January transfer window just around the corner, the Livingston game may be the last chance that certain players have to impress Nancy before he marks his own stamp on the side.

Kenny should never start again if Celtic sign £34m striker target

Johnny Kenny may never start again for Celtic if the club lands this striker in the January window.

ByDan Emery

Speaking to reporters about January additions, the manager said: “We have a lot of ability in terms of the way we play. It is important that when you sign players, they need to have personality. This is a big club. To play here is not always easy. It is so, so important to have players who can play here at a club like this.”

He then continued, saying: “When I talk about personalities, it’s not only to be vocal, it’s to have the right attitude when it is difficult.

“This means when we attack, can we keep showing ourselves for each other, can we still press, or can we defend like crazy in the moment? It’s more about the attitude for me. This is what I am looking for.”

Whether a much-needed attacking addition ticks that box is the question that Celtic fans will be asking. The Bhoys desperately need a consistent goalscorer and have been linked with the likes of Evan Ferguson as a result. But if it’s not the Brighton man, on loan at AS Roma, then it could be Ibrahim Diabate.

Celtic launch approach to sign Ibrahim Diabate

As relayed by the Scottish Sun, Celtic have now launched an approach to sign Diabate from Swedish side GAIS and are in pole position to secure a deal. The forward finished joint-top of the Allsvenskan’s scoring charts this season, with 18 goals to his name, and could now get the chance to enjoy similar success in Scotland.

Valued at £3m in Sweden, Celtic won’t need to break the bank to welcome the forward next month and it’s no doubt a move that Nancy needs.

Dubbed “powerful” by football consultant Kai Watson, the Hoops aren’t the only side interested in Diabate, but he has played down rumours that he could join Egyptian side Al-Ahly, saying: “These are just rumours. Nothing is clear about any transfer and there have been no discussions. Very little of what has been said about me signing for Al-Ahly is true.”

Celtic will be hoping to have more luck when it comes to luring the forward away from Sweden next month, but club chiefs will have to back Nancy if they are to turn what has been a dire campaign around.

WAG IDOL – The Manchester United Heat

WAGS, WAGS, WAGS… the media just can’t get enough of them and as we finish the Premier League season we couldn’t resist creating our very own WAG Idol, to find out which player has the loveliest bit of skirt on his arm.

We are running a series of club heats – so please select the wag that gives your club the best chance of taking the Wag crown.

Just click on the individual images of beauties to upload their galleries, so you can get a look of them in greater detail!

Janelle Khouri – Owen Hargreaves and current squeeze Janelle Khouri the happiest and most love fulfilled people on the entire planet. I say ‘squeeze’, incidentally, not because I have suddenly turned into Heat magazine’s ‘Spotted section, but because to do anything with Hargreaves above light petting would be to jeopardise his chances of appearing in England’s 2010 World Cup campaign.

Nikoleta Lozanova – Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov certainly seems to have a way with the ladies and any of a number of his flings could have made it onto this list. But Bulgarian model Nikoleta Lozanova is definitely a cut above the rest and would be enough to distract anyone from giving their best on the field. Interestingly Berbatov actually denied having an affair with the stunning Lozanova, which may have something to do with the fact that she is the current girlfriend of Bulgarian crime boss Georgi Stoilov, but given Berba’s track record this is hard to believe.

Sophie Houghton – Back in 2009 Italian youngster Federico Macheda burst onto the scene by netting the winning goal in a Premier League encounter against Aston Villa at Old Trafford. On the field Macheda hasn’t been up to much since then, but off it he has been a busy boy and has been dating the Wirrel’s Sophie Houghton. A winner of Miss Intercontinental Liverpool, the pair met on Facebook when Macheda was probably blown away by eye-catching pictures of Houghton. The stunning blonde is the youngster of the group but given her looks she might just topple her rivals.

Coleen Rooney – Probably the most well-known United WAG, Coleen was actually born on Merseyside but followed Wayne to Manchester when he signed for the Red Devils in 2004. Coleen likes to dabble in a number of things from TV presenting to celebrity product endorsement and she is never far away from the front pages of the British tabloids. Childhood sweethearts, Wayne and Coleen got married in Italy in 2008 and whatever she does in the Rooney household deserves some credit as Wayne can’t stop scoring right now, and she isn’t half bad to look at either!

Lisa Roughead – Unfortunate name, but that shouldn’t count against her when picking your favourite Manchester United WAG. Lisa Roughead actually married United midfielder Michael Carrick in 2007 on the same day that fellow Premier League stars Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville also tied the knot, which doesn’t seem like great planning. The Geordie became a proud dad in 2008 with the birth of his first daughter Louise in 2008, and he has done well for himself by settling down with the curvy blonde who is the outsider on this list, bet is well worth a second glance.
