Int'l break injury update on "important" Celtic star who Rodgers risked

It’s been a frustrating few weeks for Brendan Rodgers and matters have now only been made worse by the recent update on an injured Celtic player that he risked playing against Rangers before the international break.

Celtic sign Kelechi Iheanacho

Much of Rodgers’ frustration has surrounded Celtic’s transfer business. Their 0-0 draw against Old Firm rivals Rangers summed up the attacking problems that they still needed to address and, as such, Kelechi Iheanacho has since arrived. Joining back up with Rodgers for the first time since their Leicester City days, the forward desperately needs this move to go well.

The Nigerian was a free agent when Celtic turned his way, having been released after a disappointing spell at Sevilla. Now, at 28 years old, the Bhoys have handed him one final opportunity to get his career back on track.

Speaking to the club website after welcoming Iheanacho to his side, Rodgers told Celtic’s official website: “I know Kelechi so well and what he can bring to the team. He is such a talented player, with great ability, athleticism and work-rate.

“I am sure he will love being at Celtic and I believe our fans will love what he brings. He has great experience and he is right in his peak years so he can be a great signing for us. I am sure he will make a big contribution to the team.”

Brendan Rodgers sends 9-word message to furious Celtic fans about Iheanacho

Hoops supporters are not in great spirits.

The debate is ongoing as to whether the forward’s arrival will hand Celtic the boost that they were looking for, but whilst that rumbles on, the Scottish champions have been handed an undeniable blow on the injury front.

Anthony Ralston injury update after Rodgers risked him

After dropping out of the Scotland squad alongside Kieran Tierney, Anthony Ralston is now an early doubt to face Kilmarnock. The defender was thrown in the deep end and risked against Rangers despite appearing to take a knock just days before in Celtic’s Champions League tie against Kairat Almaty and Rodgers has since suffered the consequences of that decision.

Given that Alistair Johnston is already sidelined with a hamstring tear, Celtic now have themselves a mini injury crisis in the right-back spot. It begs the question as to why Rodgers would risk Ralston against Rangers in the first place.

The manager is certainly a fan of the defender, having told reporters at the end of last season: “Guys like Tony are really pivotal to the culture of this club. He doesn’t play every single game, but he is probably one of our most important players here because of his history at the club.”

Celtic now have just 10 days to get Ralston back fit and ready for the Kilmarnock game as they look to return to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership.

Paige Scholfield, the first name out of the hat in Wednesday’s Women’s Hundred draft, has been selected across formats for England A’s upcoming tour of Australia, as the women’s set-up looks to bounce back from a humiliating Ashes whitewash earlier this year.Scholfield, 29, was retained by her Hundred team, Oval Invincibles, on a £65,000 deal on Wednesday evening, after Birmingham Phoenix attempted to recruit her to Edgbaston for the 2025 competition. Now she is headed to Australia as part of a development squad featuring just four players who featured in the 16-0 points defeat in the senior tour in January.Scholfield herself would have been a fifth member of that party, but she suffered an ankle injury on England’s preceding tour of South Africa in November, which caused her to fly home before she could add to her current tally of three ODI and two T20I caps. Now she is joining Alice Capsey, Danielle Gibson, Bess Heath and Freya Kemp as the senior members of the England A party, which is due to play three T20Is, three ODIs and a one-off four-day game against Australia A from April 12-15, exactly mirroring the itinerary in which England were beaten in the Ashes. Capsey and Gibson are currently on duty at the WPL in India, and so will miss the T20I leg which begins at Sydney’s Hurstville Oval on March 26.Scholfield will be joined by players from the England Women Pace Programme, including her Surrey teammates Ryana MacDonald-Gay, Emma Jones (T20 and 50-over) and Alexa Stonehouse, who is selected across all formats. No captains have yet been named for the three formats. The majority of the group have been undergoing warm-weather training at a training camp in Abu Dhabi, and will depart for Sydney on March 17.Jon Lewis, England Women A head coach, said: “We are looking forward to testing ourselves against a national side with great depth. We are aware of the challenge ahead.”There has been some good work done by the players based in England and those who have been playing cricket over the winter around the world and this tour provides an opportunity for players to push for selection into the senior squad through strong performances against the Australians.”Jonathan Finch, Director of England Women’s Cricket, added: “We have a good mix of experience across the three squads with all players striving to perform and push for selection into the senior team. The experience they will gain through highly competitive matches within a multi-format schedule will be really exciting, and hopefully invaluable for them in accelerating their development. A tour to Australia is what so many young cricketers dream of, and we wish them well.”England Women A T20 squad: Hollie Armitage (Durham), Georgia Davis (Warwickshire), Mahika Gaur (Lancashire), Jodi Grewcock (Essex), Bess Heath (Durham), Emma Jones (Surrey), Freya Kemp (Hampshire), Ryana MacDonald-Gay (Surrey), Charis Pavely (Warwickshire), Grace Potts (Lancashire), Paige Scholfield (Surrey), Grace Scrivens (Essex), Seren Smale (Lancashire), Bryony Smith (Surrey), Alexa Stonehouse (Surrey), Mady Villiers (Durham), Issy Wong (Warwickshire)England Women A 50-over squad: Hollie Armitage (Durham), Alice Capsey (Surrey), Georgia Davis (Warwickshire), Mahika Gaur (Lancashire), Danielle Gibson (Somerset), Kirstie Gordon (The Blaze), Jodi Grewcock (Essex), Bess Heath (Durham), Emma Jones (Surrey), Freya Kemp (Hampshire), Ryana MacDonald-Gay (Surrey), Charis Pavely (Warwickshire), Grace Potts (Lancashire), Paige Scholfield (Surrey), Grace Scrivens (Essex), Seren Smale (Lancashire), Bryony Smith (Surrey), Alexa Stonehouse (Surrey), Mady Villiers (Durham), Issy Wong (Warwickshire)England Women A four-day squad: Hollie Armitage (Durham), Alice Capsey (Surrey), Georgia Davis (Warwickshire), Danielle Gibson (Somerset), Kirstie Gordon (The Blaze), Jodi Grewcock (Essex), Bess Heath (Durham), Freya Kemp (Hampshire), Charis Pavely (Warwickshire), Grace Potts (Lancashire), Paige Scholfield (Surrey), Grace Scrivens (Essex), Seren Smale (Lancashire), Alexa Stonehouse (Surrey), Mady Villiers (Durham), Issy Wong (Warwickshire)

Tottenham plan January talks for £160k-a-week Man City star after Frank request

Tottenham added much-needed quality to their squad in certain areas, but there are a few key targets that Spurs’ recruitment team missed out on.

Lilywhites boss Thomas Frank was backed by the arrivals of Kevin Danso, Mathys Tel, Kota Takai, Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani before Monday’s 7pm deadline, but partly due to complications with their locally trained quota, some were forced to miss out on their 22-man Champions League squad for the league phase.

Both Tel and Takai won’t be playing Champions League football for Spurs this season, at least until they’re allowed to amend their selections past the league phase, if Frank’s side do indeed make it that far.

Nevertheless, whilst Tel and Takai will feel hard done by as absentees from Europe, both men are likely to play a key role in the Premier League.

A high-ranking recruitment team of chairman Daniel Levy — who’s now resigned after a shock announcement — CEO Vinai Vinkatesham, technical director Johan Lange and unofficial advisor Fabio Paratici eventually managed to navigate what was a notoriously tricky window, with plenty of bumps along the way.

Tottenham were involved in two of the most dramatic transfer soap operas of the summer, and ultimately felt a devastating effect from both of them.

Morgan Gibbs-White was on the verge of joining Spurs for around £60 million before Nottingham Forest blocked the deal, threatened legal action and convinced the 25-year-old to sign a club-record contract – humiliating Levy in the process – while Arsenal sensationally hijacked their rivals for Eberechi Eze at the eleventh hour in very public fashion.

Eventually, Frank got his hands on a much-needed playmaker to replace the injured James Maddison by signing Simons from RB Leipzig for £52 million – mounting a hijack of their own on Chelsea and restoring some pride.

In the final hours of the window, Tottenham also sealed an “un-Spurs-like” straight loan deal for PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani, perhaps in reaction to Dominic Solanke’s latest injury, but it is worth nothing that the Frenchman can also play out wide.

In terms of their other transfer pursuits, Spurs were targeting a left-winger and centre-back in the final weeks of the window (Sky Sports), but to no avail.

Manuel Akanji, before his move from Man City to Inter Milan, and Brentford captain Nathan Collins were among the names linked with moves to N17 before the deadline, but neither came through the door.

Nathan Collins in action for Brentford

The same can be said for Akanji’s former teammate, Nathan Ake.

Tottenham plan Nathan Ake talks in January after Thomas Frank request

Tottenham reportedly held discussions over a late summer swoop for Ake, but the £160,000-per-week centre-back ultimately stayed at Eastlands despite his struggle for game time ahead of Rayan Ait-Nouri and Josko Gvardiol.

Manchester City's Nathan Ake

Now, as per CaughtOffside, it is believed that Spurs are planning to reopen talks for Ake in January, as Frank wants to add more experience to his squad.

Their interest in the Netherlands international stems from wanting an alternative to Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie on the left, with Ake versatile enough and capable of playing both roles.

City value Ake at a minimum £15 million with just two years left on his contract, which could be seen as great value for a prestigious player who Virgil van Dijk called “underrated”.

Ake also played an under the radar role in helping the Sky Blues win their historic 2023 treble, with Pep Guardiola calling him a “proper defender”.

Suryakumar Yadav confident his T20 runs will come

Mumbai Indians’ stand-in captain is not concerned with the absence of Hardik and Bumrah or his lean T20I form heading into the game against CSK

Alagappan Muthu22-Mar-20255:07

Can Mumbai Indians bounce back this season?

Mumbai Indians (MI) are starting IPL 2025 with some personnel issues, which has pushed Suryakumar Yadav into an even bigger spotlight. Though he does captain India in T20Is now, Sunday will only be the second time he leads his IPL franchise. Standing against him will be a Chennai Super Kings team stacked with some excellent spin bowling talent. How does he plan to deal with them?”Only sixes,” he said to kick off a chilled-out press conference. It ended with Suryakumar in stitches as he contemplated the idea of MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, to which he has been reclassified thanks to the revival of an old IPL rule.”Jokes apart,” Suryakumar continued. “They have some experience also in their side. The good bowlers who have played for this franchise before and have been playing for the franchise for a really long time. But this format, whatever comes your way, you have to be yourself. Just enjoy and take one ball at a time.”Related

Suryakumar to lead in MI in season opener

What can MI do to cope with Bumrah's absence?

Suryakumar’s sunny disposition wasn’t be soured by the players he will be missing – Hardik Pandya (suspension) and Jasprit Bumrah (injury) – or by his recent batting form.”Is that for IPL or for Team India? For IPL, IPL form has been good,” he said, throwing back to last season when he scored 345 runs in 11 innings including a century and three fifties.”I think the harder you work, the luckier you get. If it has to come, it will come anytime. But I am actually a process-oriented man. I love to work hard in the nets. And if the runs have to follow, it will follow quickly. Someday or the other.Suryakumar Yadav gets into his rhythm in the nets•Mumbai Indians

“If I am practicing well, hitting the ball really well in the nets, when I go in the game, my mind is clear, I know what I have to do. That is the moment, that is the sweet spot for me. When I know that I am in good space and I will get runs for the side.”His batting, and his team, aren’t the full extent of Suryakumar’s concerns anymore now that he is India captain and they are building towards a home T20 World Cup. He says he has always been on the lookout for breakout talents.”My eyes were always open, even when I was not the captain. Even when, I think, Rohit [Sharma] was the captain of T20. That time also, my eyes were wide open. Because at the end of the day, when someone does really well in the IPL for the franchise and goes on to play for India, every player is important. So, any player who can make an impact for India, your eyes have to be wide open. And it won’t be that different from all the years. I think it will be the same. Just a little bit of added responsibility. That’s it.”MI will need to look to their bench to balance their XI at Chepauk, where a “good wicket” awaits them. It looks like they might turn to Satyanarayana Raju, a 25-year-old Andhra fast bowler who picked up seven wickets in seven matches at an economy rate of 8.23 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was among the first set of bowlers to hit the nets on the eve of the game on Saturday.”I feel if you see Mumbai Indians set up over the years, it is more than 10-15 years now. The scouting team has been amazing. We have picked amazing players. Going after, looking at all the domestic matches, sharing it with the coaches and the picks have been great. We have a lot of exciting players also this time in our dressing room. Good characters, funny ones as well. It is good we saw them during the camp, during the practice games. I think they are ready for the stage.”

Rangers must rue losing star who's worth millions more than Chermiti

There was plenty of excitement building around Ibrox after the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh completed their takeover of Glasgow Rangers earlier this year.

Supporters dared to dream as a new manager, Russell Martin, came through the door and the owners were willing to invest money to improve the playing squad.

The 49ers and Cavenagh oversaw a busy summer of transfer business in an attempt to overhaul the squad that ended the 2024/25 campaign without any trophies to show for their efforts.

Djeidi Gassama was one of the early signings who caught the eye after his £2.2m move from Sheffield Wednesday, as he scored four goals in his first four appearances, per Sofascore.

Bojan Miovski, who scored 32 goals in the Scottish Premiership in two seasons with Aberdeen, also arrived as a headline signing from Girona at the end of last month.

Perhaps the most intriguing addition of the summer transfer window for Rangers was their penultimate signing, Portuguese centre-forward Youssef Chermiti.

Why Youssef Chermiti is Rangers' most interesting signing

The 49ers sanctioned a deal to sign the 21-year-old striker for an initial fee of £8m that could rise to £10m if the £2m in add-ons are achieved in the years to come.

Former Rangers striker Tore Andre Flo.

This means that Chermiti is the most expensive signing made by the Light Blues since they paid £12m to sign Tore Andre Flo from Premier League side Chelsea in the summer of 2000.

Straight off the bat, this makes the Portugal U21 international an intriguing signing for Rangers because they seem to believe that he is a good enough player to warrant such a seismic transfer fee, by their standards.

As you can see in the table above, Chermiti did not enjoy a successful time during his two years in England with Everton, as he failed to score a single goal or provide any assists in 24 first-team appearances.

The Toffees signed the young marksman from Sporting in a deal worth up to £15m in the summer of 2023, with Kevin Thelwell behind the scenes, and they were willing to take a fairly significant loss on the striker after just two years.

His only two goals for Everton’s senior side came in a friendly match against Sligo Rovers in 2024, and his complete lack of impact in competitive games may be why they were willing to take a hit on the £15m that they paid for him.

This is why Chermiti is the most interesting signing of the summer for Rangers because, on current evidence, he does not appear to be worth the £10m, or £8m guaranteed, that the club have splashed on him.

It is now up to Chermiti and Russell Martin to work together to ensure that he delivers consistent and quality performances on the pitch to make this transfer a success, changing the narrative from £10m risk to £10m bargain.

Per Transfermarkt, no permanent Rangers player is worth more than £8.7m, which speaks to how expensive this £10m deal for the striker is, but there is a former Gers starlet who is now worth millions more than that, Billy Gilmour.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

The Scottish central midfielder came up through the youth ranks at Ibrox and appeared destined for first-team football in Glasgow, before he decided to pursue a career down south.

Why Rangers must rue losing Billy Gilmour

In the summer of 2017, Premier League giants Chelsea swooped to sign Gilmour from Rangers and paid a development fee of £500k for the 15-year-old talent, who was said to be one of the biggest prospects in Scottish football.

Sky Sports reported that manager Pedro Caixinha attempted to convince the teenage midfielder to turn down a move to Stamford Bridge to continue his development at Ibrox, but he was unable to change the player’s mind.

Seven years on from that moment in history, Rangers must still rue that they were unable to pitch Gilmour a good enough project to convince him to remain at the club instead of making the move to Chelsea.

Whilst the central midfielder, whose attitude was dubbed “incredible” by Roberto De Zerbi, was always destined to move on from Scottish football at some point, the Gers could have at least earned more money from his sale by keeping him until he had a chance to shine at first-team level.

Gilmour has gone on to win the Champions League with Chelsea, sign for Brighton & Hove Albion, and sign for Italian giants Napoli, winning the Serie A title in the 2024/25 campaign.

By the age of 24, the midfield metronome has been capped 40 times by Scotland, played 81 times in the Premier League, and played 29 matches for his current club Napoli, per Transfermarkt.

As you can see in the table above, Gilmour’s market value has also soared to a staggering £17m from the £500k that Chelsea paid for him just over seven years ago.

The 24-year-old star is now worth £7m more than the deal Rangers have agreed with Everton for Chermiti, and £4m more than any other former Ibrox academy starlet, which speaks to how successful he has been since moving away from Glasgow.

Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour.

Based on what he has achieved in his career already, it would be difficult to make a case to say that Gilmour made the wrong decision to leave Rangers to join Chelsea in 2017.

However, the Gers will almost certainly rue not doing enough to convince the player to stay because he would currently be the most valuable permanent player in the current squad, ahead of Raskin at £8.7m, per Transfermarkt.
