New Zealand take strides towards levelling series

Can New Zealand end successful home summer on a high?

New Zealand’s home season had gone a little something like this: reclaimed their beloved Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, conceded a total of 595 only to win the Test and set a world record, spirited nine wickets in the final session on the final day to seal a whitewash. They had about as much to prove as ice does of being icy. Then came the great Wellington collapse, which led BJ Watling to say, “I don’t think we will judge our season on that last game. But we might on this one.” If so, going into their last day of 2016-17, five wickets away from securing their first win over South Africa in a decade, should get a Colin de Grandhomme-sized thumbs up.The 30-year old allrounder was at the centre of New Zealand’s dominance after all, making his first half-century, and topping that up with the wicket of Dean Elgar – who in an ideal world would be the brand ambassador of Velcro. “Stick things together as tight as I stick to the crease”. An early wicket was the last thing South Africa needed after spending 162.1 overs in the field. Not since June 2010 have they had to flog themselves so badly. The fatigue was apparent in the dismissals of two of their most important players. Hashim Amla kept poking at deliveries wide outside the off stump. But his feet weren’t moving at the usual lightning speed. The bat wasn’t coming down with the same rapier-like flourish. One of the most mentally strong cricketers in the world played one of the doziest shots as he cut Jeetan Patel tamely into to the hands of slip. Four overs later, the offspinner had JP Duminy bowled while shouldering arms and South Africa were 50 for 4 – and 125 runs behind. It began looking like ten times that number when Matt Henry had Temba Bavuma caught behind off the second ball of his second spell.Faf du Plessis – the majority shareholder of Blockathon Inc. – and Quinton de Kock – suspected Gilchrist clone – were the survivors of a day South Africa would only want to remember they summon their superpower to draw Tests out of nowhere. It is going to be difficult though. The pitch has begun to take sharp turn. There were footmarks outside both the right-hander and the left-hander’s off stumps. And though it was the fourth day, there was still seam movement for the fast bowlers. Challenges that players at the peak of their ability would find difficult, let alone a set who had just spent the equivalent of two full days chasing leather. It is at a time like this that you don’t want silly dismissals. It is at a time like this that irony cannot resist butting in. And South Africa lost their other opener Theunis de Bruyn – a man who has played the majority of his professional career as a middle order batsman – to a run-out borne of a ghastly misunderstanding. It was the 12th over and Amla defended the ball to mid-off solidly. But the minute he did so, he began haring down the pitch, not noticing that his partner had already turned his back. By the time de Bruyn cottoned on to what was happening, he was wrapped up in a collision with Amla. There was nothing he could do but stand in the middle of the pitch and stare helplessly as Kane Williamson’s throw was gathered at the wicketkeeper’s end and the stumps were broken. The final session, when New Zealand simply ran amok, was set up by the first two, when New Zealand could be best described as glacial. They began with 76 runs in 206 deliveries. The plan clearly was to keep wickets in hand so they could kick on after lunch. Half an hour to the break though, their key man, Williamson, was bounced out by Morne Morkel after making 176. And off the last ball of the session, they lost Mitchell Santner for 41 off 151 balls.South Africa would have been pleased with their morning’s work. Their bowlers – despite the miles in their legs – were still able to keep tight lines and lengths. Santner’s presence at the crease – and his propensity to be unsettled by short balls – also helped as he took his time to work through his troubles. There were only seven boundaries in the session – only three in the first hour of play when New Zealand nudged their overnight score by 32 runs in 17 overs.A team that needed a win to level the series batting as if they were in the nets seemed bizarre, but Williamson knew the effect it would have on the South Africans. He also knew he had de Grandhomme down the order to biff a few when needed. And finally, if everything went to plan, his spinners would have a well worn pitch to exploit. It was all reminiscent of New Zealand’s unexpectedly brilliant run in the World T20 in 2016. They couldn’t take the trophy then, but if they can hold their disciplines for one more day – and rain stays away – a prize equally as coveted could be theirs – victory over a team they haven’t beaten for 13 years.

Leeds Could Already Have Phillips Heir In £55k-p/w "Machine"

When Leeds United secured promotion to the Premier League in 2020 after 16 years away, a city erupted into rapture. Manager Marcelo Bielsa was soaked in adulation, the players revered as saviours, harvesting the malaise of two decades and returning the club to its rightful place.

And initially, this was carried out with aplomb; the Whites' first season back in the Premier League resulted in a ninth-placed finish and an admiration from supporters of English football for the attractive football and cohesive efforts of a unified squad.

To say it unravelled would be an understatement, and Bielsa's dismissal in February 2022 confirmed the end of an era at Elland Road; the subsequent appointment of Jesse Marsch did little to quell the escalating discontent, with a near-escape from relegation unable to be built upon this term, and the bitter fate has been confirmed, and Leeds return to the second tier.

But with the 49ers now imminently awaiting the confirmation of their takeover of the club, there is reason to hope for greener pastures once again in west Yorkshire, with the right moves on the transfer front surely setting the prestigious outfit in good stead for an immediate return to the top-flight.

And while there will be a multitude of outgoings this summer, one player who must be fervently convinced to remain at the club is USMNT international Tyler Adams, who has been one of the bright sparks in a dull and uninspring crop.

Should Leeds keep hold of Tyler Adams?

While the 24-year-old would no doubt fetch a pretty penny if sold over the coming months, the value of keeping him as the nucleus of the Leeds midfield is vital to ensure that the Premier League is the forthcoming destination.

There have been reports that the Whites have slapped a £40m price tag on the industrious ace amid interest from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Aston Villa, and while recuperating such a fee after the chastening plummet from the Premier League would be beneficial, his exploits on the pitch would not be easily replaced.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post's Graham Smyth, the club will "make a big play" to keep the gem at the club, and while it will not be easy, Leeds' chances of promotion would increase tenfold with the £55k-per-week Adams in the middle, pulling the strings.

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

Signing from RB Leipzig for around £20m one year ago, Adams was always viewed as the successor to Kalvin Phillips, with the endeared midfield general departing for Manchester City in a £45m deal several days prior.

Described as a "monster" by former Crystal Palace star Yannick Bolasie, Phillips starred for United across their first two Premier League seasons of recent times but notably stole the show with his stunning performances in the 19/20 Championship season, where he earned an average Sofascore rating of 7.28, completing 82% of his passes, averaging 1.8 key passes per game, and making 2.6 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 1.3 clearances per outing.

Comparatively, the 36-cap USA centre-midfielder recorded a respectable average rating of 6.98 in the Premier League this season, completing 82% of his passes, averaging one key pass per match and making 3.7 tackles and 1.5 interceptions.

Adams could be the "tackling machine" – as praised by Kevin Campbell – that the club needs to return to prominence, and with the robust brute pulling the strings with his all-encompassing work, it could be a successful season for a side desperate to return to former glory,

Aston Villa Could Sign Their Own Gundogan At Villa Park

Aston Villa still have their sights set on Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, as Unai Emery imagines a reunion with his former player.

News linking the Frenchman to Villa Park isn’t new, with rumours of his potential suiting to the Villans spanning back to the winter transfer window, where it was suggested the Midlands side would revisit the target in the summer.

Now, with Monchi dictating the business this transfer window, the speculation has reappeared, with news revealed yesterday firmly keeping Villa in the race for the 24-year-old.

What’s the latest on Matteo Guendouzi to Aston Villa?

As reported by French outlet La Provence – relayed by Sport Witness – the Frenchman remains on the radar of both Villa and West Ham United, with his future still undecided.

The report claims that the midfielder is waiting to see what his role will be under Marcelino, with Villa and the Hammers named as two of the favourites in the race to capture the former Arsenal gem.

Contracted to the Ligue 1 side until 2025, the saga surrounding Guendouzi’s future is not over yet, however Sport Witness state a move ‘could be on’ with reference to the two Premier League clubs interested.

What could Matteo Guendouzi offer to Aston Villa?

Emery fired the Villans up the table to confirm European football next term, however, the 51-year-old has set his sights on further success, which he could do so should this summer be prosperous.

Back in the summer of 2018, Emery captured the signature of 19-year-old Guendouzi to bring him to north London.

The Frenchman went on to make 82 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, before endeavouring on various loan spells, however, his impact at the Emirates has made him an encouraging target for a return.

Lauded as a “monster in the making” by talent scout Jacek Kulig during his time at Arsenal, the Frenchman showcased his ability in orchestrating the engine room with an eye for a good pass and being alert defensively.

Marseille midfielderMatteo Guendouzi.

Now equipped with further experience and maturity, Guendouzi could well be the 'monster' player to take Emery’s side to the next stages of development, and act as the Spaniard’s answer to a player seasoned in the English top-tier.

Likened to former Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan via FBref, the £42k-per-week gem could give Villa Park glimpses of the treble-winning maestro should he arrive in claret and blue.

When comparing the duo’s respective seasons, it’s clear to see why the 24-year-old is wanted back in the Premier League, scoring similar numbers to the magical talent of Gundogan.

The differences between the two midfielders are limited, with Guendouzi scoring marginally better than the 32-year-old in a range of attributes typical of a deep midfielder.

The Poissy-born star averaged 7.26 progressive passes to Gundogan’s 6.50 per 90, as well as exceeding the German in terms of his passing rate to the final third, with an average of 6.11 passes per 90 to his 5.47 in the Premier League, via FBref.

A similar ratio is evident in their defensive work in the 2022/23 campaign, with the Marseille controller averaging 1.67 tackles and 0.90 interceptions per 90 to the treble winner's 1.15 tackles and 0.77 interceptions, via FBref comparisons.

It’s clear to see just how impressive Guendouzi could be for Emery and Villa should the Spaniard secure the trust of his former player this summer, giving Villa Park the potential to have their own answer to the new Barcelona signing.

Liverpool Drop Out The Race For "Indispensable" £152k-p/w Star

Liverpool have dropped out of the race for Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, and they will instead prioritise the signing of Southampton's Romeo Lavia, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

Liverpool have already bolstered their midfield with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai this summer, with the latter joining in a £60m deal earlier this week, putting pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Reds.

However, Jurgen Klopp is still eager to get more done in the transfer market, and with Steven Gerrard lining up Jordan Henderson as his first signing for Al-Ettifaq, the manager may need to bring in multiple new options in midfield.

There have been several players linked with a switch to Anfield, including Nice's Khephren Thuram, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, while the likes of Franck Kessie and Tyler Adams have also been named as potential options.

Gravenberch has been touted for a move to Liverpool on a number of occasions, with the Reds said to be plotting a swoop for the Bayern Munich man way back in March, however it now appears as though he will not be joining this summer.

That is according to Plettenberg, who took to Twitter to claim the Reds are "definitely" out of the race for the midfielder, despite the fact that talks between the club and the player's management took place.

"News Gravenberch: Liverpool is definitely OUT of the race! But talks between the club and the player's management took place," the journalist said.

Instead, Lavia is now considered one of the priority targets for Klopp, although the Sky Sports reporter is keen to stress that Bayern would be willing to sell the Dutchman this summer, if they received the right offer.

FSG have also dropped out of the race for Khephren Thuram, with reporter David Lynch revealing the OGC Nice midfielder will no longer be pursued due to the addition of Szoboszlai, so it seems all focus really is on a more traditional 'number six' like Lavia.

What position does Ryan Gravenberch play?

The 21-year-old has most often played at central midfield throughout his career so far, however he is also capable of playing in a deeper role, ranking in the 73rd percentile for tackles and 71st for interceptions per 90 over the course of the past year.

During his time with Ajax, the youngster was hailed as "indispensable" by football scout Jacek Kulig, making a minimum of 30 Eredivisie appearances in his final two seasons with the club, however he has not quite managed to kick on at Bayern Munich.

In his first season with the German champions last year, the former Ajax man only received 559 minutes worth of game time across the Bundesliga season, having been unable to hold down a consistent place in the starting XI.

That said, the £152k-per-week midfielder is still very young at 21-years-old, and he has plenty of time to develop further, so it is a little disappointing that Liverpool have dropped out of the race for his signature.

However, Lavia could prove to be a very good alternative option for the Reds, particularly in a defensive sense, having averaged more blocks and interceptions per 90 than Gravenberch over the course of the past year.

Now the Southampton star is one of Liverpool's priority targets, Klopp will be hoping progress can be made towards securing his signature in the coming days.

Chelsea Have The Perfect Havertz Heir In "World-class" Gem

A new era is in full swing for Chelsea.

The last week has seen the departures of numerous first-team players edge extremely close as the incoming Mauricio Pochettino attempts to trim a hideously bloated squad.

The most unexpected and well-documented exit is that of Kai Havertz to Arsenal as Fabrizio Romano revealed that a £65m deal has been agreed upon, and his medical is to be scheduled.

However, the Blues were already prepared for this eventuality – RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku has had an agreement with Chelsea since October. It was recently confirmed he has joined for a reported fee of €60m (£52m).

In his first interview as a new Premier League player, the Frenchman has outlined how he can bring excitement to Stamford Bridge.

He said: "We can say that I am a hard worker. I will give everything for the club, for the fans and to help the team bring some trophies. To give the best of my football. I hope I will make them as happy as I am to be here at this club.

“I think the project was good for me. It is a good project for me to develop myself as a player and a man also.

“I want to improve, to progress every day, so wherever they tell me to play, I play, and I wanted to improve in every position. So that’s the way I go about everything and why I was able to score goals after changing.

An upgrade on Kai Havertz?

Nkunku arrives in the English capital off the back of a scintillating final season in Germany. In 25 Bundesliga appearances, the ten-cap international scored 16 goals, as he was the division’s joint-top scorer, despite missing nine games through injury.

The forward isn’t just a one-season wonder, as he was crowned the Bundesliga’s Best Player and Footballer of the Year in Germany for 2022.

As well as his potency, the attacker has demonstrated himself to be a wonderful all-rounder. He ranks within the top 9% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for non-penalty goals per 90, shot-creating actions per 90, progressive passes per 90, and successful take-ons per 90.

The £124k-per-week star has splendid pedigree and can fill the void left by Havertz, who flattered to deceive in a Chelsea shirt.

Kai Havertz

The German’s time in west London has seen flashes of impudent brilliance, but he has desperately lacked consistent ruthlessness, cutting an anonymous figure for prolonged periods.

Whilst Havertz is obviously extremely talented, he was yet to be fully unlocked in any Chelsea system and failed to hit double digits for goals or assists in any season for the Blues.

It’s the best outcome for both parties to go their separate ways. Nkunku, who has been hailed as “world-class” by former Leipzig assistant coach Achim Beierlorzer, now has the opportunity to become the new talisman.

Back my stock ball, googly a variation to take wickets – Kuldeep

Kuldeep Yadav has said bowling to MS Dhoni was challenging but he was not scared to be hit for a boundary

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Apr-20171:20

‘Wasn’t afraid of bowling to Dhoni’ – Kuldeep

Kuldeep Yadav could feel the pressure of bowling to MS Dhoni on Wednesday evening. Despite being a spinner, Kuldeep was picked by Gautam Gambhir to bowl the 18th over of Rising Pune Supergiant’s innings with Dhoni and Steven Smith in a partnership of 35 runs from 21 balls. One batsman had regained his touch of smashing sixes in the end overs and the other has not gone out of form since landing in India for the Test series.”If you are a spinner there’s always pressure on you,” Kuldeep said after the match. “As a spinner, I believe that you can put the opposition under pressure by picking wickets. Like in the last over I took two wickets and they were under pressure. Bowling the 18th over is always tough; the captain needs to believe in you for that.”Kuldeep’s first ball to Dhoni in the match, in the 16th over, had been pulled for a flat six over midwicket. In the 18th over, Kuldeep deceived Dhoni with a googly. Dhoni stepped out to get to the pitch of the ball, but it turned away, beat his bat and was stumped.”Bowling to Dhoni is always challenging and I could feel the pressure,” Kuldeep recalled. “But I wasn’t scared that he would hit me for a six or a four. I flighted the ball and I was focused on getting him out.”Three balls later, Kuldeep had Manoj Tiwary on strike, Rising Pune’s best batsman this season in terms of strike rate (with at least five innings). Kuldeep had conceded only three runs in four balls until then in the over and he had Tiwary stumped even though the batsman did not step out to hit him. Kuldeep bowled another googly, Tiwary leaned forward to tuck the ball to the leg side with the spin but the ball went the other way and Tiwary’s back foot was outside the crease.Kuldeep, however, said the conventional legspinner was still his stock delivery as he used the wrong’un and the flipper mainly to get wickets.”It (googly) is only a variation and you can use it in T20s to confuse a batsman when he is attacking,” he said. “But I really believe in my chinaman bowling rather than the wrong’un and flipper. I back my stock ball more and I’m mainly a chinaman bowler; the wrong’un is a variation you use to pick wickets or stop the runs. But my main delivery is chinaman delivery. Obviously, the wrong’un gets you wickets and the batsmen keep wondering if the ball will come in or go out, they find it difficult to pick, especially the overseas batsmen. So if you dismiss Indian batsmen like that, it’s a big boost for confidence.”Kuldeep has so far gone wicketless in just one match this IPL and has collected eight wickets, joint with team-mates Nathan Coulter-Nile and Umesh Yadav, who have had the advantage of a pacer-friendly relaid pitch at Eden Gardens.Kuldeep has had an impressive run since the beginning of the domestic season. He was the highest wicket-taker and the leading run-scorer for Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy; he topped the wicket-takers charts in the Duleep Trophy too, with 17 wickets in three matches, and he shone on his Test debut with 4 for 68 against Australia in Dharamsala.”If you play the entire season and you’re highest run-getter or the highest wicket-taker, it becomes easier to play on the next level because of the momentum you are carrying,” Kuldeep said. “If you aren’t playing domestic cricket you might lack in some places. I’ve played Duleep Trophy, one-dayers, T20s, India A, so this season has been really helpful for me which is why I have a lot of confidence.”Knight Riders will play their next match against Delhi Daredevils on Friday.

Chelsea Closing In On Signing Of £80m Midfielder

Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the £80m signing of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, according to an exciting new transfer update.

Do Chelsea want to sign Moises Caicedo?

The future of the £15,000-a-week Seagulls star has been one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer window so far, with numerous clubs interested in signing him.

Caicedo was one of Brighton's top performers last season, shining under both Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi, seeing his stock rise hugely in the process. While his current club are desperate to retain his services, having already lost Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool, it is looking increasingly difficult for them, especially as he wants to leave.

Chelsea has emerged as the strong favourites to acquire the 21-year-old's signature, with the Blues and by extension new manager Mauricio Pochettino seeing him as the ideal replacement for N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic in the middle of the park. Now, it looks as though his move to Stamford Bridge could be nearing its conclusion, in what represents a positive update.

caicedo-premier-league-brighton-chelsea-transfer

Are Chelsea signing Moises Caicedo?

According to a key claim from Football Insider, Caicedo is now closer than ever to joining Chelsea, with an £80m move on the verge of coming to fruition:

"Chelsea are confident of securing a deal for Moises Caicedo worth £80million in total, sources have told Football Insider. Caicedo has already agreed personal terms with the Blues and his potential move to Stamford Bridge is now edging closer. The 21-year-old has been a long-term target for the London club and is believed to be keen on the move.

"Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been pushing hard to sign the midfielder and are closing in on an £80m deal following new discussions in the last hours."

This is great news for Chelsea, who have seen Caicedo as a top target for some time now, and he has the potential to be a game-changing signing in midfield, assuming the move does go through.

The Ecuadorian has the rare talent of being a top-class midfielder both in and out of possession, proving to be equally adept at pressing opponents and winning tackles as he is at keeping the ball ticking over. Last season, no Brighton player averaged more tackles per game in the Premier League than his tally of 2.7, while of those to have started 10 games or more in the competition, only Lewis Dunk (90.4%) had a higher pass completion rate than his 88.8% for the Seagulls.

It still isn't guaranteed that Chelsea will get Caicedo – a move to Liverpool isn't completely out of the question, amid rumours are several experienced stars moving on, including Jordan Henderson and Fabinho – but it would be a big surprise at this point if he wasn't plying his trade in west London next season.

He could be seen as a fantastic option alongside Enzo Fernandez in midfield – Jamie Redknapp has hailed him as both "brilliant" and "magnificent" – in what could be a vibrant young partnership for many years to come. Big strides are needed from Chelsea in the Premier League next season, in order to get back into the top four, and snapping up Caicedo could go a long way to making that happen.

Wolves: Lopetegui Can Forget Neves With Swoop For £140k-p/w Target

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly eyeing a move for want-away Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

Old Gold boss Julen Lopetegui will look to bring in players to bolster his side this summer, after successfully conducting the sale of a number of names amounting to almost £80m.

After letting a host of talent depart to both sales and contract expirations, the Spaniard could pull off a masterclass by signing the once-adored Ajax man.

How much is Donny van de Beek worth?

With an expected transfer value high of €55m (£47m) at the point of signing for United, the Dutchman’s value has dropped significantly to just €13.3m (£11.3m), via FootballTransfers.

The 26-year-old maestro’s drop in value could come as a plus for Lopetegui, with 90min reporting earlier this week that Wolves are one of the potential escape routes out of Old Trafford for Van de Beek.

It’s claimed that the midfielder is ‘exploring options’ in the bid to leave Erik ten Hag’s side this summer.

Could Wolves sign Donny van de Beek?

Named as one of the potential suitors for the former Ajax star to fix his career with, the Midlands club could strike gold in securing the Dutchman’s talents this transfer window.

Despite missing a chunk of football in his prime years, the United stranger could reignite his past form at Molineux being only 26, there are plenty of years to explore yet in his career.

The £140k-per-week dynamo was a shining star in the Eredivisie, being a controlled and intelligent midfielder in the set up at Ajax, seeing him hailed as “magnificent” by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Making the move to England has been cruel so far for the Nijkerkerveen-born gem, where he has been starved of game time in Manchester, which has subsequently tarnished the form he arrived with under his belt.

In three seasons at United, the 26-year-old has made just 34 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals and registering one assist in that time, via Transfermarkt.

A failed loan at Everton amounted to just seven additional appearances in the league, making for a painful stay so far for the player.

donny-van-de-beek-ajax-manchester-united

Things are not all bad however, with a move away this summer potentially signifying the chance to shine in England, with the individual certainly having the capacity to be a top midfielder in the league.

After bidding farewell to captain Ruben Neves already this window, Lopetegui must find cover to replace the departed star, and Van de Beek could arise to be the perfect candidate to lead by example in the midfield at Molineux.

Based on his numbers obtained in the Netherlands, the former Eredivisie sensation could be the heir to Neves, who was an authoritative figure in the middle of the park.

Going back to the 2019/20 campaign that marked his final term in Amsterdam, the Dutchman scored eight goals and registered five assists, acting as a threat in the final third from central midfield.

The 26-year-old gem’s contribution in front of goal was not the only strength that saw him targeted by United, as he posed to be a strong distributor of the ball, as highlighted by his 1.93 key passes and 0.32 expected assists per 90, via FBref.

Lesser numbers were recorded last term in the Premier League by the former Wolves captain who, as per FBref, averaged 0.95 key passes and 0.04 expected assists, to signify just how much of a talent Lopetegui could recruit this summer.

The Old Gold could land themselves a bargain at the perfect time this window, however, they must act fast to capture a player wanting away from his current settings.
