England include Dawson, Ballance confirmed at No. 3

England will go into a Lord’s Test with two spinners for the first time in almost a quarter of a century on Thursday

George Dobell at Lord's04-Jul-2017England will go into a Lord’s Test with two spinners for the first time in almost a quarter of a century on Thursday.Ahead of his first Test as captain, Joe Root confirmed that Liam Dawson will form a two-pronged spin attack with Moeen Ali in the first Test of the series against South Africa. It will be the first time England have fielded two specialist spinners in a Lord’s Test since 1993. On that occasion, they conceded 632 for 4 in the first innings on their way to an innings defeat. Some might dispute that neither Dawson nor Moeen is a specialist spinner. Neither has a first-class bowling average under 36 (Moeen’s is 41.89 and Dawson’s 36.86) and it is true that neither would have enjoyed the careers they have without the batting ability that renders them more valuable to each team they represent. They are allrounders by most reasonable definitions. It is Dawson’s inclusion that is most intriguing. Or, as he termed it, “a bit unexpected”. Halfway through the India tour, Adil Rashid looked as if he had gone a long way to establishing himself as England’s first-choice spinner. He claimed 23 wickets in the series. But his star faded as the series progressed. And Dawson, making his debut in Chennai, not only offered England some control with the ball (he conceded three an over in that Test while Rashid went at 5.15) but struck an unbeaten 66 in England’s first innings. Rashid, to be fair, also scored 60 but Dawson emerged as a man the England management felt they could rely upon in all situations. He’s not necessarily a match-winner, but he can keep an end tight and provide late-order acceleration or rebuilding as required with the bat. While that might not, at first glance, appear to fit with the bold talk of positivity that surrounded Root’s elevation to the captaincy, it’s worth remembering that England lost eight Tests in 2016. A team containing the likes of Root and Ben Stokes and Moeen doesn’t necessarily require more flair but more solidity. Dawson looked calm amid the storm in Chennai and while it is hard to see him pulling off spectacular individual performance, it is a team game and he can contribute a supporting role in all departments. It means that Toby Roland-Jones again has to wait for his chance. Even with all the other seamers coming into this Test with something to prove as regards their fitness and even on a surface that just might prove uncharacteristically green, five frontline seamers could have been excessive. Not since 2003 have England fielded five seamers in a Test. When all options are fit, Roland-Jones remains behind Chris Woakes and Jake Ball in the hierarchy, too. With the likes of Jamie Overton, the Curran brothers and Tom Helm also developing, time is probably running out for the 29-year-old Roland-Jones.There have been a couple of other notable faces at Lord’s over the last couple of days. Gary Palmer, the freelance batting coach, had a long session with Alastair Cook that started at 7am on Monday morning (Palmer has been working with Cook regularly over recent months with some success but has found his requests to work with other Test candidates falling on deaf ears), while Chris Taylor, the fielding coach, was also involved in training on Tuesday. Taylor has, on the whole, been used in white-ball sessions, so it is fair to interpret his presence as an attempt to increase the emphasis on fielding. Saqlain Mushtaq, the spin-bowling consultant, and Andy Hurry, head of the ECB’s cricket development programme, were also among the coaching team.Root also confirmed that Gary Ballance would return to the side at No. 3 with the captain dropping to No. 4. Both would, you sense, prefer No. 4 to No. 3, but Root – having fought for the selection of his old friend, flatmate and colleague – is the boss and may well require Ballance to take responsibility for the higher position.Might it have made more sense to pick a specialist for such a position? Mark Stoneman, in particular, can probably count himself unfortunate. Even for England Lions at the weekend, Ballance batted at No. 4.Either way, a recall to No. 3 is a huge ask for a man enjoying his third – and potentially final – incarnation as an England player. But a few months ago it seemed Ballance had almost no way back as a Test player. This is a great opportunity for him.

Karunaratne urges positivity over survival

Seeing out Graeme Cremer and staying positive will reverse a little pressure and bring a mammoth 388 target within reach, according to Dimuth Karunaratne. The opener made 49 to help set the tone for the innings.Zimbabwe claimed his wicket and two others with balls that took substantial turn. The delivery that dismissed Karunaratne spun more than any other in the match, hitting the fast bowlers’ footmarks and darting alarmingly into his offstump. Kusal Mendis, who had also been positive at the crease, and Angelo Mathews, are the overnight pair.”I do think we can make it,” Karunaratne said. “We have already scored 170 for three wickets and we need only 218 more. We’ve also batted out the period when he ball is hard and does a little bit more. All Zimbabwe have now is the support from that rough.”Angie and Kusal are set now. If those two guys keep on batting for an hour or more tomorrow morning, they can get set again. If that happens, I don’t think it’s easy to get them out unless we do something silly.”Mendis, whose 60 has come off 85 deliveries, was busy at the crease, and used his powerful flat sweep shot to good effect. Mathews has already used the reverse-sweep himself, during his 33-ball 17. Both those options may be key to manipulating the field.”They’re bowling on the leg side with more fielders. So we need to have a plan to change that field may be playing a reverse sweep,” he said. “If we do that, we will be able to put some runs on the board quickly.”If we just to survive, we’re losing the opportunity to win the match. We need to be positive. When another 60 to 70 runs are scored, I think they will spread out the field. Then we can get the single and have a chance. We have to put them under pressure.”Cremer, who had claimed a five-wicket haul in the first innings, appears the key figure in the opposition attack. He has already bowled 58.3 overs in the match, however, and Sri Lanka may have hopes of tiring him out, as they had once done with Yasir Shah, in Pallekele. Sean Williams was the other wicket-taker on Monday.”Cremer is bowling in good areas and turning it well. As a wrist spinner, he gets a lot out of the surface. What Sean doing is that he pegs the batsman down and forces him to commit a mistake against Cremer. Other than those two, I don’t think there will be a huge threat. The reality is that those two cannot keep bowling right throughout the day.”

Arsenal Could Ditch Martinelli For World-Class £173m Star

Arsenal seem to be a quiet contender to pull off one of the greatest transfers the Premier League would have ever seen…

Is Kylian Mbappe leaving Paris Saint-Germain?

That's according to Football Transfers, who attest that the Gunners are keeping a close eye on the developing situation regarding Kylian Mbappe's drawn-out exit from Paris Saint-Germain.

With Sky Sports having detailed the deterioration of the relationship between player and club, suggesting the former is willing to sacrifice his next year of football in order to leave for free next summer, many clubs have been put on high alert as such a generational asset becomes available.

Not least Mikel Arteta, who will reportedly use Gabriel Martinelli as a makeweight to convince the Parisian giants to allow him to join them.

A package is in place for the France international should he choose an Emirates switch, although it would hinge on the move happening in January or next summer.

It had previously been suggested that his exit would not come unless a €200m (£173m) fee was stumped up, although that could drop dramatically given the fresh update.

How many goals does Kylian Mbappe have?

It does not need much to outline just how utterly exceptional Mbappe is and would be wherever he chooses to play.

With 212 goals in 260 games for PSG and a total of 244 strikes across an already illustrious career thus far, the 24-year-old truly has the world at his feet.

Even teammate Neymar would agree with that notion, as he claimed last year: "He’s a world-class player, present and future of this club. I’m very happy that Kylian – who’s my friend and teammate – he’s staying here at Paris."

It, therefore, goes without saying that he would walk into virtually every team in the world, even if elite stars stand in their way.

Martinelli enjoyed arguably the best year of his career since moving to north London and finished as the club's joint-top scorer as they made the lofty step up to title challengers.

Scoring 15 times and assisting a further six across all competitions, it is hard to imagine many who would even challenge the 22-year-old, let alone completely usurp him.

However, his tally pales in comparison to his potential successor, who notched 41 goals and assisted a further ten in just 43 games in all competitions in France.

What makes Mbappe even more special, aside from his remarkable goalscoring figures, is the imperious technical quality he boasts on the ball.

His dribbling technique is exemplary, and his creativity is unparalleled. When compared to other forwards across Europe, he ranks in the top 5% for progressive passes per 90, the best 1% for progressive carries per 90, and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90, via FBref.

The former AS Monaco star is the perfect all-around attacking package, and for all Martinelli's progress in recent years, there is little chance he will grow to such an unparalleled level.

Upon securing the Brazilian's contract extension, Arteta noted earlier this year: "He’s a player with enormous potential – he still has so many things to improve but he’s already performing at a really high level.

“He can develop physically. He can develop mentally. He can develop in terms of consistency. He can develop defensively. He can develop in the final third and in the spaces that he occupies. His numbers can be improved, and he’s so willing – that’s the best thing about Gabi."

Whilst this is outlined to excite fans at the ceiling he boasts, there are a few attributes with which Mbappe could improve. It is this gulf that separates the two, with his potential acquisition set to turn Arsenal from mere contenders into the team to beat.

Tottenham Ask For Information On "Magnificent" £41k-p/w Star

Tottenham Hotspur have now asked for more information about Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, with the deals for Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven stalling, according to a recent report from CaughtOffside.

What's the latest Tottenham transfer news?

It has now been reported that Ange Postecoglou is now set to focus all his efforts on signing Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who has recently been stripped of the captaincy at Old Trafford, but the manager has other centre-back targets in mind.

Tottenham have been working on deals to sign Van de Ven and Tapsoba for quite some time now, with the Bundesliga duo previously emerging as the club's leading targets, however they are only likely to sign one of the two.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, Spurs have reached a broad agreement with Van de Ven on personal terms, however there is still a "distance" on an agreement with Wolfsburg, as the German side's asking price is deemed to be too high.

The deal for Tapsoba is stalling for similar reasons, meaning Tottenham may look at signing former loanee Clement Lenglet, while they are also exploring the possibility of signing either Marc Guehi or Joachim Andersen from Crystal Palace.

Sources have told CaughtOffside that the Lilywhites have now also asked for more information about Adarabioyo's situation at Fulham, amid the defender's uncertain future at Craven Cottage.

The 25-year-old's £41k-per-week contract is currently set to expire in the summer of 2024, and talks over a new deal completely collapsed back in June, meaning this summer will be the Cottagers' last chance to cash-in.

At the moment, Tottenham have made no formal proposal for the Englishman, but that could change if the deals for their top defensive targets continue to stall.

How good is Tosin Adarabioyo?

Lauded as "magnificent" by football writer John Cross, the 6 foot 5 colossus made 25 appearances for Fulham in the Premier League last season, establishing himself as one of the Cottagers' key players as the season progressed.

The former Manchester City man averaged 5.5 clearances per game in the top flight, by far the most of any player in the squad, while an average of 1.2 tackles was the highest of any Fulham centre-back.

Previous reports have indicated Adarabioyo could be available for the cut-price fee of around £13m this summer, which would make him an affordable option for Tottenham, who are unwilling to match the high asking prices for Tapsoba and Van de Ven.

Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo

However, there is good reason why Tapsoba could command a higher transfer fee, as he has performed better than the Fulham ace on a number of key defensive metrics over the past year, averaging more tackles and blocks per 90.

Not only that, the Bayer Leverkusen star is much more assured in possession of the ball, attempting an average of 71.08 passes per 90, and he is fantastic at driving the ball forward, ranking in the 92nd percentile for progressive carries.

With Postecoglou keen to implement an aggressive and attacking style of play, Tapsoba could be the perfect signing for Tottenham, and they will be hoping Leverkusen are willing to lower their asking price in the coming weeks.

Aston Villa Pushing To Sign "Fantastic" £19m EFL Star

Aston Villa have no intention of giving up in the race for Leeds United's Wilfried Gnonto, and they are still pushing Everton in the race for his signature, according to journalist Alessio Lento.

Who are Aston Villa signing this summer?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has reported that signing a new winger will now become Villa's main aim this summer, telling GiveMeSport: “Finding a new winger is considered the new priority for Emery after reaching a deal for Pau Torres because he wants a fresh dynamic to give his attack a new edge.

“Villa have also been looking at Harvey Barnes and Brennan Johnson, so this is going to be interesting to see exactly how they narrow down the profile of the player they want and need. The ability to be adaptable is definitely something important, that’s what I keep being told.”

With Barnes now close to completing a move to Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest set to demand "mega money" for Johnson, Emery could now move on to other targets, having recently identified a couple of other options.

Moussa Diaby is now a target for the Villans, although they will have to battle the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal for the Bayer Leverkusen star, while they are also one of the Premier League clubs now taking an interest in Pyramids FC's Ibrahim Adel.

There were reports early on Tuesday which indicated that Everton are now close to signing Gnonto, who has made it clear that he wants to leave Leeds this summer, but Emery is not willing to go down without a fight.

CalcioMercato journalist Lento reports that Villa and their manager have "no intention of letting go" in the race for the Italian winger, as we now enter the hottest hours in regard to his Elland Road future.

Villa are seemingly yet to make any concrete moves for the 19-year-old, but there is a suggestion they could attempt to hijack the Toffees' deal at some point in the near future.

How much will Wilfried Gnonto cost?

There have been reports that Everton are willing to stump up £19m for the youngster, but there is always a chance his price gets driven up even higher if Emery decides to make a late swoop.

Although Leeds were relegated from the Premier League last season, the Italy international showed some promising signs, weighing in with four goals and four assists in all competitions despite only receiving sporadic game time, drawing praise as "fantastic" from Gary Neville.

Wilfried-Gnonto-Leeds-premier-league-everton-transfers

Given his age, the former FC Zurich man is not yet the finished article, and there are a number of areas in which he must improve, namely in his distribution of the ball, ranking in just the 32nd percentile for his pass-completion rate per 90 in the past year.

However, Gnonto has time on his side, and the fact he already has Premier League experience under his belt could make him a solid low-cost alternative to the likes of Diaby, with Bayer Leverkusen set to hold out for £50m to sanction the Frenchman's departure.

Man United: Alex Telles Joining Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr For £6m

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles is set to depart the club to join Al Nassr as the Glazers start a summer clear-out of Erik ten Hag’s squad, according to Manchester Evening News.

Who have Manchester United signed in 2023?

The Red Devils have really kick-started their business in the summer transfer window this week with a move for Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana, following on from the big money signing of Chelsea’s Mason Mount.

Ten Hag was delighted with the arrival of Cameroon star Onana, saying: "I think with his physical presence and also with his personality, he is so keen on winning. He's so, so eager to win trophies and he will help the team and he will help the squad to get to higher levels."

Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The manager is far from done adding to his squad though, with rumours he could sign another more experienced goalkeeper in Sevilla and Morocco star Bono, while there is also expected to be some action in the centre-forward department, with Rasmus Hojlund seemingly the top target there.

The club are in pole position to sign Hojlund, but with a price tag rumoured to be around €90m (£78m) they will have to get busy in the outgoing department in the coming days and weeks, looking to clear space on the wage bill and recoup some funds.

How much is Alex Telles worth?

According to Samuel Luckhurst, writing for MEN, Telles could be the first senior squad member sold for a fee this summer, as the Brazilian looks all set to join Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, the same club Cristiano Ronaldo plays for.

However, the Glazers aren’t going to get much profit back on the deal, as the former FC Porto man will generate a fee of just £6m after three years at Old Trafford.

This is of course a far cry from some of the funds flying around to Premier League rivals in deals with the Middle East – Jordan Henderson and Fabinho look set to generate over £50m for Liverpool, Allan Saint-Maximin’s move from Newcastle is said to be worth around £26m, while Chelsea have sold several players for big money.

There is however some Saudi interest in Eric Bailly, while Anthony Elanga looks set to join Premier League side Nottingham Forest and Dean Henderson could soon follow suit too, so perhaps the manager could have a few more funds to work with before too long.

Telles was far from a success story at Old Trafford, never really budging Luke Shaw off the top spot in the left-back pecking order and playing just 30 times in the Premier League.

However, the 30 year-old did rack up 50 outings in total in the northwest, scoring once and racking up eight assists, so the end product that made him so exciting at Porto did rear its head at times.

The main beneficiary from Telles’ exit will presumably be Tyrell Malacia, who joined the club from Feyenoord last summer and had an up and down first campaign in England, showing flashes of his potential but recording zero goals or assists from 39 games.

Out-of-contract Australian cricketers to get external funding boost

Major financial institutions and private individuals have shown interest in supporting the players, according to the ACA

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Jul-20173:46

What is the pay dispute all about?

Most of Australia’s cricketers are out of contract but they are unlikely to be out of pocket, as various sources of funding emerge to help tide them over during the impasse between Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA).”The ACA is in the process of securing a multimillion-dollar line of credit to support the unemployed players to counter attempts by CA to starve them out,” an ACA spokesman said.”Major international financial institutions have shown strong interests in supporting the players at this difficult time. The ACA is fielding support from private individuals who are also willing to back this move.”With little headway being made in the deadlock – the players want to retain the existing revenue-sharing model, while CA does not – 230 of Australia’s cricketers, including all the top players on central contracts, have been without a contract since July 1. Ordinarily they would have been paid on July 15 but with that agreement now invalid, the also reported the “injection of millions of dollars in ‘loans’ from several wealthy backers” into a hardship fund set up by the ACA that could, according to the report, last “until Christmas.”Currently, only the Australia women’s team is in action, in the ongoing World Cup in England. They came to an agreement to do so with CA, but will be out of contract if the dispute isn’t resolved by the time the tournament ends. The first casualty of the pay dispute was Australia A’s tour of South Africa, which was scheduled to begin on July 12 but has been called off after the Australian players refused to tour. The Australia senior men’s team are scheduled to tour Bangladesh in August, but that series is dependent on the ACA and CA arriving at an agreement. And though the Ashes, to be hosted by Australia later this year, is still some time away, the spectre of it not going ahead looms uneasily.

Afghanistan cancel Ireland tour due to T20 clash

Afghanistan have withdrawn from a proposed one-day series against Ireland next month due to a clash with their domestic T20 competition

Afghanistan have withdrawn from their tour of Ireland next month•AFP

Afghanistan have withdrawn from a proposed one-day series against Ireland next month due to a clash with their domestic T20 competition.Ireland, who lost 3-2 in their last ODI encounter with Afghanistan in Greater Noida in March, had hoped to host a three-match return series in Belfast in July. However, the Afghanistan Cricket Board have informed Cricket Ireland that they’re not in a position to approve the tour, due to a clash with preparations for their domestic franchise T20 event.”Of course, our preference is to give as many opportunities as possible to our senior men to play our closest rivals on our home turf, so we are disappointed the matches won’t proceed in July,” said a Cricket Ireland spokesperson.”We have enjoyed two very competitive recent ODI series against Afghanistan in Belfast and India. Hopefully we will continue to work with the ACB to see if there are further opportunities to reschedule the matches at a later date.”Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO Shafiq Stanikzai said the series, which Ireland had proposed, had never been officially approved.”The proposal came from Cricket Ireland, to play them in three ODIs before our MCC game [on July 11],” Stanikzai told ESPNcricinfo. “We agreed in February or March, and the tour was approved by the ACB. Then it was kept on hold by Cricket Ireland, because they were waiting for the ICC board meeting. About two weeks ago, they approached us again to ask if we could go ahead and play this series. This time, the board didn’t give us permission because the team is busy, plus we have the T20 franchise tournament coming up.”The timing of the series proposal from Ireland was particularly inconvenient for Afghanistan, who are playing a limited-overs series in West Indies, which concludes on June 14.”The team has been playing for three months continuously,” Stanikzai said. “It makes no sense to come back from West Indies to Kabul for ten days, and then go back to Ireland. We need proper preparation for an Ireland series. We can’t have the team in Afghanistan for ten days and go straight back into competition phase. It would have been great if we could go straight from the West Indies to Ireland because then preparation would not be an issue. But since the proposed dates [from Cricket Ireland] were July 1-9, the schedule just didn’t work out for us.”Stanikzai stressed that the cancellation of the tour did not sour relations with Cricket Ireland, at least from the ACB’s point of view.”Ireland are our closest rivals, and we would like to play them more and more. We will be looking in the future for an opportunity to play Ireland. We will draw up a schedule with Ireland when we meet them at the Annual General Meeting in June to see when we can play each other again, hopefully in the latter part of this year. Our relations with Ireland are very friendly, and we want them to remain that way.”ESPNcricinfo understands that Afghanistan’s maiden fixture at Lord’s, when they take on an MCC side led by Brendon McCullum on July 11, is unaffected by this decision.
