Possible free transfer: Newcastle eyeing offer to sign "extraordinary" star

Newcastle United are reportedly looking to complete the signing of an "extraordinary" renowned midfielder, as they aim to make further reinforcements in the coming transfer windows.

Newcastle transfer news…

Eddie Howe's side drew 2-2 at West Ham on Sunday afternoon, as Mohammed Kudus' late strike deprived them of three valuable Premier League points. While failure to pick up a victory in east London was slightly disappointing, it is still a draw that could be looked back on as a decent result in May, with the Hammers a strong team currently. Newcastle have really turned a corner since a poor start to the season, not least thrashing Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 in the Champions League, and it feels as though they could once again be destined for big things in 2023/24.

One thing that could help the Magpies in their quest for glory is making a number of new signings in the January transfer window, allowing Howe to make his squad stronger, aiding rotation in the process. Should the right players not be available at that point, plenty of summer additions should be expected instead, even though the manager has addressed Newcastle's FFP situation, stating they won't lead to the club spending big, and that appears to have resulted in targeting a potential soon to be free agent.

Newcastle transfer update; Adrien Rabiot

According to a fresh Newcastle transfer update on Adrien Rabiot, the Magpies are interested in signing the Juventus midfielder at the end of this season, with Rabiot's contract expiring at that point. The Magpies aren't alone in expressing a keenness to snap up the Frenchman, however, with Manchester United also believed to be in the mix. Both clubs are "ready to knock on Rabiot's door again" after showing interest in the past, and they look in a better position to offer him a superior deal than Juve, as they look to keep hold of him.

Rabiot could be a really shrewd signing by Newcastle in the summer of 2024, with the free aspect of it making it far less of a gamble, too. Granted, the 28-year-old may demand high wages, but not having to pay a fee for him could make it an excellent deal. The Juve midfielder has been a top-level player for some time now, winning 38 caps for France and making a combined 412 appearances for his current club and Paris Saint-Germain, while former French striker David Trezeguet has described Rabiot as "extraordinary".

A box-to-box player who can provide both defensive nous and an eye for goal, Rabiot has averaged 2.1 aerial duel wins per game in Serie A so far this season, not to mention enjoying an 89% pass completion rate, highlighting the overall quality that he possesses in his game. He could therefore be great foil for the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, as well as providing Howe with the extra depth he may well crave.

Rangers manager news: Gers may take "risk" on "very interesting" manager

Rangers chiefs could take a "risk" with one potential appointment after a "very interesting" candidate emerged, says reporter Dean Jones.

When will Rangers appoint a new manager?

The Glasgow giants, after sacking Michael Beale last week, are reportedly set to make a final decision very soon as they hold a final round of interviews in London this week. Sky Sports have claimed that Rangers are holding their last round of discussions with candidates down south, with two names leading what is now a two-horse race. Both former AS Monaco manager Philippe Clement, who won a plethora of titles in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, and Yokohoma.F Marinos head coach Kevin Muscat are in contention to succeed Beale.

Rangers currently sit seven points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table, numbers which make for grim reading, and they have already lost three league games. This poor form resulted in Beale's sacking, and if results don't pick up, Rangers risk falling behind the Hoops and watching them secure a third-successive domestic crown.

The Teddy Bears have also been booed off the pitch on multiple occasions this season, highlighting the dire state of some performances. This is despite Rangers bringing in many fresh faces over the summer transfer window. Abdallah Sima, Dujon Sterling, Kieran Dowell, Jack Butland, Leon Balogun, Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers, Danilo and Jose Cifuentes all put pen to paper on moves to Glasgow, with a good few either sidelined or under-performing.

Rangers news: Philippe Clement update

Clement is a name with proven experience winning silverware on the continent, having lifted domestic trophies in Belgium across spells at both Genk and Club Brugge. The tactician was also head-hunted by Ligue 1 side AS Monaco and is currently without a club, surely making him an excellent candidate to step into Beale's shoes at Ibrox. Indeed, Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell even once called him "one of the most prominent and successful coaches in Europe in recent years."

"His profile as a modern coach, with his teams playing with great intensity and [is] daring, including on the continental stage," said Mitchell.

"His ability to combine titles and the development of young players have made him one of the most prominent and successful coaches in Europe in recent years."

Journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, shared his own Clement manager update. He believes that while the 49-year-old fancies the job, and is an extremely intriguing candidate, the club could also be taking a "risk" with his potential hire.

"Philippe Clement seems to be one that is a very interesting candidate to emerge. I think the fact he fancies the job is a good sign. In terms of credentials, I also think he is a pretty good profile fit. Appointing him would be a bit of a risk because there are going to be a few unknowns around him. But, generally, this feels like a better path to go down instead of picking someone on name and standing, like you would be with someone like Frank Lampard."

ICC likely to approve harsher penalties for ball tampering soon

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has escaped a more severe ball-tampering charge because the ICC is yet to approve newly-modified sanctions for the offence

Ball tampering and personal abuse could attract higher penalties – Richardson

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has escaped a more severe ball-tampering charge because the ICC is yet to approve newly-modified sanctions for the offence. Under the revised rules, recommended by its influential cricket committee, that the ICC is likely to pass at its annual conference later this month, ball tampering will be upgraded from a Level 2 offence to Level 3.As it stands Chandimal, if found guilty, will only attract a Level 2 offence. In addition to any monetary penalty, the maximum sanction under a Level 2 charge is two suspension points which correspond to four demerit points and ban of one Test or two ODIs. Under a Level 3 charge, a player is slapped with four to eight suspension points, the upper limit amounting to six demerit points and a ban of four Tests or eight ODIs.During their two-day meeting in May, the ICC cricket committee, which is headed by former India captain Anil Kumble, recommended that it was time to consider severe sanctions against offences like ball tampering. The committee was concerned by the recent spate of events during Australia’s tour of South Africa in March when several players from both teams attracted disciplinary charges. Consequently, Cricket Australia had banned Steven Smith and David Warner for 12 months and Cameron Bancroft for nine months from playing international cricket for their roles in the ball-tampering controversy in the Cape Town Test. The ICC’s cricket committee, comprising other former international captains, deliberated on raising the penalty for ball tampering to a Level 3 offence from the existing Level 2. ICC chief executive David Richardson, who sits on the cricket committee, told ESPNcricinfo that Kumble’s panel “came hard” at personal abuse and ball tampering specifically.According to Richardson, the cricket committee “viewed” ball tampering as “cheating” which went against the spirit of cricket. “Therefore, they (committee) were very strong that we need to increase the sanctions available for that type of conduct,” Richardson said. “So we are talking moving both ball tampering and personal abuse, foul language upto Level 3.”The cricket committee’s recommendations will now be discussed by the ICC’s chief executives committee during the annual conference in Dublin later this month before receiving a final ratification from the ICC Board. Richardson pointed out that, if the ICC Board finalises moving the sanctions to Level 3, in future ball tampering could attract a suspension of “minimum of four Tests”.”We are considering bumping it up to Level 3 and even considering the range of penalty slightly higher as well,” Richardson said.

Michael Beale replacement: Rangers could hire 13x trophy winner

Glasgow Rangers are currently on the lookout for their next permanent head coach after they made the decision to part ways with Michael Beale last weekend.

The Light Blues were beaten 3-1 at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership last Saturday and the club opted to move the English boss on by Sunday night.

Chief executive James Bisgrove is now tasked with finding a replacement for the 43-year-old boss and a number of managers have already been linked with the vacant role in Glasgow.

One man who has been touted with a possible move to the Gers is Marcelo Gallardo, who has been without a club since December last year.

How many trophies has Gallardo won?

The 47-year-old enjoyed a sensational spell in his home country with River Plate as he racked up 13 trophies in eight-and-a-half years with the club and could be a dream upgrade on Beale.

He averaged more than one trophy per season and won two Copa Libertadores titles during his time with the Argentine giants.

Former River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo.

His exceptional performance in Argentina led to high praise from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, which speaks to his pedigree within the coaching world.

The legendary Spanish manager lauded Gallardo's "incredible" job and questioned why he is never among the best three managers in the world when it comes to award season.

Having also won a Uruguayan top-flight title with Club Nacional in 2012, he has proven himself to be capable of competing for silverware on a regular basis and can instil a winning mentality in his squad, as shown by his impressive work with River Plate.

Gallardo predominantly favours an attacking 4-3-3 formation and this suggests that he sets his teams up to be on the front foot to take the game to the opposition.

How many trophies has Michael Beale won?

Beale has not won a single trophy in his career as a manager to date and has yet to prove that he has what it takes to lead a team to glory on his own.

The ex-Chelsea academy coach enjoyed success as Steven Gerrard's assistant at Ibrox but has struggled since making the switch to being the main man in the dugout.

Former Rangers manager Michael Beale.

He is yet to lift a piece of silverware after spells with QPR and Rangers as his debut campaign in Scottish football failed to yield any real success during the 2022/23 season.

The Gers were knocked out of Europe before his arrival to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Beale was unable to win the Scottish Premiership, the League Cup, or the FA Cup, as their rivals completed a domestic treble under Ange Postecoglou.

Rangers gambled on the English tactician being a success without any real evidence to back it up, as he had not completed a full season in charge of a club or won any trophies prior to his move to Ibrox last year.

Bisgrove can now put that right and avoid making the same mistake by hiring an experienced trophy-winner like Gallardo, who could restore the Gers back to their former glory.

These problems have been detailed by , which claims that during January of last year, Man Utd "shook hands" on a new deal with Russo, only to "renege on several conditions", which led to it collapsing. Earps is one of several players out of contract at the club this summer, with negotiations for a new one having dragged on for over 18 months. writes: "Poor communication from those in charge regarding budget and strategy for contract renewals, signings and transfer fees are said to have delayed negotiations and led to United missing out on players."

Chelsea could be in pole position to sign world-renowned star

Chelsea are in need of signing some world-class players in the future, and they could be the front-runners to snap up one marquee star, according to a fresh update.

Will Chelsea sign more players in January?

It's fair to say that the Blues' 2023/24 season hasn't got off to the start that many hoped it would during the summer, at which point there was fresh positivity in the air after the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as manager.

There is already plenty of pressure on the new boss, following just one win in Chelsea's opening six Premier League matches of the season, and new signings arguably haven't yet made a big enough impact.

In attack, the Blues looking lacking in genuinely top-quality, established options, and it could be that the January transfer window is seen as a perfect opportunity to make reinforcements in attacking areas.

Chelsea supporters will then be buoyed by a new update that has emerged regarding the club's search for attacking superstars, with one former target still seen as a potential option.

Which world star are Chelsea in the race to sign?

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are the "best-placed club" sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, should he force through a move away from the reigning Serie A champions.

The chances of him leaving are believed to have "increased" due to a "social media scandal" that has happened in recent days, with his agent even reportedly threatening to take legal action over the saga.

Meanwhile, journalist Fabrizio Romano talked up Chelsea signing Osimhen to Caught Offside, saying he would be "perfect" for them: "There’s no concrete information about Victor Osimhen’s future yet. Obviously after the social media story and uproar we will see links with 10 clubs, but nothing is happening now. He’s a beast, can score lot of goals from anywhere and, for sure, he’d be perfect for any club including Chelsea."

Osimhen was one of Europe's most devastating attacking players last season, scoring 26 goals in Serie A and helping Napoli win their first league title since 1990, so the idea of him in a Chelsea shirt is clearly an exciting one.

At 24, the Nigerian is someone who is not only excelling as a "world-class" player at the moment – Rudi Garcia has described him exactly that – but also remaining that way for the foreseeable future. His tally of 63 goals in 108 appearances speaks for itself, in one of Europe's toughest leagues, and while he would clearly cost a lot of money, he could prove to be worth every penny.

He could lead the line to perfection for Chelsea, combining brute strength, clever movement and ruthlessness in front of goal, providing strong competition for Nicolas Jackson and allowing the youngster to play second fiddle, giving him time to hone his trade at the same time without so much pressure.

The fact that Osimhen could be unhappy at Napoli after everything that has happened this week acts as an added bonus for the Blues, heightening the chances of a January move happening and the west Londoners acquiring the services of a fantastic player at the peak of his powers.

West Ham: Moyes suggests "important" star could miss Newcastle

West Ham United manager David Moyes has suggested that one "very important" player could miss the Newcastle United game on Sunday.

West Ham vs Newcastle preview

Both sides come into the contest in very good form, with West Ham winning four out of their opening seven Premier League games. Picking up all three points against Chelsea, Brighton, Sheffield United and Luton Town, only Man City and Liverpool have managed to beat Moyes' side so far this season. The Irons are also enjoying a brilliant start to their Europa League campaign, clinching two wins from two after beating Bundesliga side SC Freiburg and Serbia's Backa Topola in the group stages.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have just experienced one of their most exciting fortnights in recent memory. The Magpies knocked City out of the EFL Cup last week after they put newly-promoted Sheffield United to the sword with a seismic 8-0 win at Bramall Lane. Eddie Howe's side are unbeaten since the start of September, most recently Ligue 1 giants Paris-Saint Germain 4-1 in the Champions League.

The mood around both east London and St. James' Park is one of real positivity, and it will be very interesting to see if West Ham have enough to overcome a Newcastle side on top of the world right now.

West Ham vs Newcastle team news

A big positive for West Ham is that Newcastle could be without an array of key players for their trip to the London Stadium. Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon and Sven Botman are all unable to feature. Joelinton and Callum Wilson are also doubts for Newcastle.

On the Hammers, defender Aaron Cresswell is sidelined and Ben Johnson has picked up a little injury too, with striker Michail Antonio also missing their clash against Freiburg. Sharing an update on the Jamaica international, Moyes has suggested Antonio could be absent from their face-off with Newcastle tomorrow, but doesn't rule out his inclusion either.

“I will need to see if Michail is available. He’s not trained yet," said Moyes.

"He has done some running with the medical team, so over the next couple of days we will see if he is able to play.”

The forward has played excellently in parts this season, scoring two goals and grabbing an assist over West Ham's opening league games. Called a "very important" player by Thilo Kehrer earlier this year, former Irons striker Frank McAvennie also praised Antonio for his contribution.

Michail Antonio's style of play

Likes to do flick-ons

"If Antonio wasn’t back to his old self, we wouldn’t be the team that we are now," said McAvennie.

"Because the way we play, you need somebody up front working hard, and that’s what Antonio does. Danny Ings can’t do that, so if Antonio doesn’t do that we’re in trouble, because he’s doing that and it’s part of the team and it’s working because of the way he runs and fights up front."

The 33-year-old could be a crucial player for Moyes over the coming season, as West Ham didn't sign a new striker in the summer window.
