Man Utd want to sign "one of the world’s biggest talents" ahead of Man City

Manchester United are reportedly looking to sign an exciting young attacker ahead of rivals Manchester City next year.

Man Utd transfer news…

The Red Devils splashed the cash on three high-profile additions over the summer, with Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund all arriving at Old Trafford. Altay Bayindir, Sofyan Amrabat, Jonny Evans and Sergio Reguilon also made the move to Manchester, but on the pitch, things haven’t been going to plan.

Erik ten Hag’s side have lost half of their opening eight Premier League games and their opening two Champions League group stage fixtures, with the Red Devils returning to action this weekend against Sheffield United.

The January transfer window is also fast approaching, and by the looks of things, those at Old Trafford are already identifying potential targets for 2024, one of which being "one of the world's biggest talents" in the eyes of football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Sport Witness relayed a Florian Wirtz transfer update in the last 48 hours, claiming that Man Utd, Man City and Newcastle United are all in the picture to sign the player alongside Bayern Munich. The report adds that Wirtz is going to receive ‘very high proposals’ from England, with Leverkusen wanting around €85m (£74m) for his services next summer.

florian-wirtz-newcastle-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

Florian Wirtz profiled…

Wirtz is primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play out wide or slightly further forward if needed. The Germany international has been on the books with Leverkusen since 2020 and has seen his transfer valuation rocket to a career-high €85m after starting at €10m when he arrived at the club. (Florian Wirtz profile – Transfermarkt)

Statistically, Wirtz has been a regular in recent years and has now made 113 senior appearances for Leverkusen, scoring 26 times and providing 34 assists, netting three times and registering four assists in 10 appearances during the current campaign. (Florian Wirtz stats – Transfermarkt)

Wirtz’s manager, Xabi Alonso, has even compared the player to Lionel Messi earlier this year, saying:

"There are good players and there are players who look good on the pitch. The player who looks good does things that are nice, but not necessarily efficient. Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!' It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good."

Therefore, with Bruno Fernandes approaching 30 years of age and Christian Eriksen already over 30 years old, United could see someone like Wirtz as a shrewd long-term addition, and by the looks of things, a deal is one to keep an eye on.

West Brom injury news: Corberan’s “exciting” player could return vs QPR

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a boost after learning that one of their injured players could be set to return for this month’s game vs QPR in the Championship.

Where are West Brom in the table?

The Baggies have made a really mixed start to the new campaign having so far secured four wins, four draws and three defeats, meaning that they find themselves 11th in the table, and here is how that first group of matches have played out so far:

Swansea City (3-2)

Leeds United (1-1)

Blackburn Rovers (2-1)

Middlesbrough (4-2)

Bristol City (0-0)

Huddersfield Town (2-1)

Preston North End (4-0)

Watford (2-2)

Birmingham City (3-1)

Sheffield Wednesday (1-0)

Millwall (0-0)

Carlos Corberan hasn’t at all been helped by the fact that Daryl Dike, Josh Maja, Adam Reach, Martin Kelly and John Swift are all out on the sidelines with their own respective injuries, but they aren’t the only ones to have recently been away from the action.

Over the summer, Jeremy Sarmiento put pen to paper on a season-long loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, but he had an unfortunate beginning to his new life in the Midlands having sustained a quadricep problem, which the boss said would keep him out for four weeks.

Jeremy Sarmiento injury update

Speaking to West Brom News, Dr Rajpal Brar delivered an injury update on Jeremy Sarmiento and suggested that West Brom's attacking midfielder won't be available for Saturday's encounter vs Plymouth, but could be back for the next game against QPR:

He felt something in the quadriceps muscles after his first start – which sounds like soreness based on the reports – but then continued to feel pain after a limited-minute cameo. After that, he had scans – likely some level of tear – that will require a period of rest.

“Once the injury has healed sufficiently, the physios will begin to ramp him up again. He’ll miss the next one but may fight to return before the end of the month for games after this one.”

Brighton and Hove Albion forward Jeremy Sarmiento.

How old is Jeremy Sarmiento?

Sarmiento is only 21 years of age so he’s still very early on in the development stages in his career, and you can tell that with him having only posted five contributions, three goals and two assists, in 48 appearances since first bursting onto the scene (Transfermarkt – Sarmiento statistics).

However, Ecuador’s international is a versatile operator having previously been deployed in five different positions over the pitch, including three roles in the centre and even out wide on both the left and right flanks, so his ability to easily adapt to the manager's demands makes him a great option to have in the building.

According to journalist Josh Bunting, Sarmiento is an “exciting” talent and it’s a shame that he’s not yet had the opportunity to showcase his abilities at West Brom, but if he is to return to the pitch at some point in the near future, it would be a huge boost for Corberan to finally be able to utilise his summer signing.

Blow for Ten Hag: Man Utd "monster" suffers injury; played in last 5 games

Manchester United have been hit with an injury crisis this season, and it looks as if another player is sidelined for Erik ten Hag.

Man Utd injury news…

The Red Devils had a number of players out through injury prior to the international break, with Scott McTominay the hero against Brentford with two late goals at Old Trafford. The win saw United reach the break with four wins from a possible eight in the Premier League, although they have suffered back-to-back defeats in the Champions League. Something that appears to have played a part in the tricky start to the season is the number of players out injured, especially in defence.

Casemiro also joined the injury list after suffering an ankle injury for Brazil, but returned against Uruguay, and by the looks of things, Sofyan Amrabat is the latest player to have a problem. The Daily Mail relayed an Amrabat injury update from reports in Morocco, claiming the summer signing missed his country’s 3-0 win over Liberia due to an unspecified injury. Morocco manager Walid Regragui said over the weekend:

“We will not hide behind absences, because we knew about Amrabat’s absence before the start of the camp. Amrabat can get injured at some point. We must find a solution and alternative, and we have players capable of filling the void that Sofyan will leave.”

Where has Sofyan Amrabat played for Man Utd?

Amrabat arrived on loan from Fiorentina late in the summer window and has played 328 minutes of action for the Red Devils so far, featuring in the previous five games in all competitions. (Sofyan Amrabat stats – Transfermarkt) The 27-year-old has started three games as a left-back due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia and featured as a holding midfielder against Brentford. Ten Hag has praised Amrabat’s versatility as a result, saying:

“Sofyan is a player who, where the team needs him he will play. It’s one of the reasons we signed him. Every player has his best position, but he gives a certain dynamic in the game. We just started, and the process was a little bit interrupted by the many injuries we had. You see with Mason [Mount], Amrabat — they can contribute to the game and they will do.”

However, it looks as if Ten Hag may have to find a solution without Amrabat, hailed as a "monster" by broadcaster Carlo Garganese, starting this weekend against Sheffield United, and hopefully, Amrabat’s injury won’t prove to be serious.

Fabrizio Romano: Man Utd takeover news from Sheikh Jassim "sources"

Manchester United’s takeover saga could soon come to an end, with reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano sharing an update from “sources close to Sheikh Jassim”.

Man Utd takeover news; Ratcliffe, Jassim

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Jassim have been the frontrunners in 2023 to secure a Man Utd takeover from the Glazers, with the pair both making numerous bids throughout the year.

It looked as if Jassim was “very close” to a Man Utd deal just last week, following rumours from Qatar, however, as we know, there was a big Man Utd takeover development over the weekend. Jassim decided to withdraw his offer for the Red Devils on Saturday, leaving Ratcliffe and INEOS close to agreeing a 25% stake in the club, possibly overseeing sporting decisions.

Despite this, there have still been rumours about Jassim possibly returning to the bidding process. Reports have claimed that ‘key figures involved in Ratcliffe’s deal are not completely sold on the idea that the Qatari bidder has made the decision to walk away from the process’.

However, taking to X, Romano shared a further Man Utd takeover update regarding Jassim, claiming the decision to walk away from a deal “is 100% guaranteed and confirmed”.

“Sources close to Sheikh Jassim guarantee that his decision to leave the negotiations for Man United is 100% guaranteed and confirmed. No current plans to change that. Glazers family, already informed last week after final bid rejected.”

What are Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s plans at Man Utd?

It looks as if it is a matter of time until the takeover saga finally ends, with Ratcliffe and INEOS taking a minority stake in the club from the Glazers. As mentioned, the 70-year-old wants to have influence on sporting decisions and reports have claimed that Ratcliffe’s plans at Man Utd include overseeing a 100-day review at Old Trafford, looking at things both on and off the pitch. Redeveloping Old Trafford could be on the businessman's long-term to-do list, however, renaming the stadium isn't on his agenda, with Ratcliffe previously saying:

"I hadn't thought of that, but no. That would be heresy. I would not change it. It's always Old Trafford."

Meanwhile, when it comes to new signings, spending big also may not be something Ratcliffe looks to do, as he criticised the club’s transfer business back in 2019. Ratcliffe said:

"They have been the dumb money, which you see with players like Fred. United have spent an immense amount since [Sir Alex] Ferguson left and been poor, to put it mildly. Shockingly poor, to be honest.

"We have a different approach here to be moderately intelligent about it. Try to do it more grassroots, trying to locate young talent. Some clubs seem to have an ability to do that, Southampton and Lille. United have done it really poorly. They have lost the plot."

By the looks of things, Ratcliffe may be looking to make measured and calculated decisions both on and off the pitch in Manchester, and a takeover involving Jassim now looks completely off the table.

Joe Root cautions against complacency despite India's disarray

The performance of Chris Woakes, on his return to side was a huge boost for England as he absence of Ben Stokes was barely noticed

Melinda Farrell at Lord's12-Aug-2018England may be 2-0 up in the series after a resounding victory over India. They may have dominated the entire Indian batting line-up apart from Virat Kohli. Not to mention there is a chance Kohli may not be at full strength for Trent Bridge after battling back stiffness at Lord’s.And yet… Joe Root isn’t leading the wagon-circling just yet. That is to be expected of course. Captains are naturally cautious of prematurely blowing the victory horn, they’d rather wait until all the ladies of varying girth have packed up their vocal chords and gone home. So it was no surprise that Root was keen to play down any talk of smelling five-nil-type blood in the water after an innings victory that has left India in disarray.”Obviously, that would be the dream – to put in five complete performances and have five wins,” said Root. “But it’s important we don’t get complacent, arrogant, or look too far ahead.”We’re playing against the No. 1 side in the world, with some very talented players, and we have to make sure we keep looking to learn and develop.”We’re not the finished article – we’ve got a long way to go to where we want to get to. We’re going to have to start again and work extremely hard over the next five days to win the next game.”That’s got to be our mentality…of course, it’s a great position to be in – 2-0 up with three to go, going into Nottingham, which is a great place for us to play.”But we’ve really got to make sure we are realistic about things. Enjoy the position we’re in, and when we get our opportunities really try to put India under pressure and drive the game forward, but not get ahead of ourselves”The question of how to fit both Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes into one Test team is one that has hovered around the England camp for some time. Stokes’ availability for the third Test is completely out of England’s hands for now but his loss has been softened by Woakes’ Man of the Match performance – he took four wickets and made an unbeaten 137 – in his first match back from side and knee injuries.”Ben is obviously a huge part of this squad, so it’s a miss him not being here this week,” said Root. “But what it did do was create an opportunity for Chris to come in and perform – and boy, he didn’t disappoint did he? He was outstanding.”He’s a big part of our squad, all three formats, it’s been a frustrating summer for him, he’s been injured for a long part of it, and to get an opportunity to come in this week – the easy thing to do is get anxious, try a bit too hard, but he settled in magnificently well with that first spell in particular, then took that confidence into his batting, that partnership changed the game, turned it on its head, and got us miles ahead on that surface.”It’s a great headache to have for us, going into next week.”It’s nice to see guys really taking opportunities, and that’s something we really want to harness as an example to the guys in and around the squad – when you get your chance, make it as hard as possible to leave you out.England are mindful that their own performances with the bat and in the field have hardly been blemish free in the first two Tests and Root doesn’t want his side distracted by the prospect of any changes India make as they try to salvage the series.”We haven’t played the perfect performance yet, and that’s something we’ve got to keep striving towards, regardless of what team India have at Trent Bridge. We’ve got a place we want to get to as a side, and we have to continue to work hard to get there. It’s important we enjoy this win then we spend next couple of days getting good preparation into that third Test.”

Tottenham now targeting move to sign £70m attacker who’s "similar" to Son

Tottenham are reportedly after a £70 million-rated attacker who's even been likened to star winger Son Heung-min.

Johan Lange arrives at Spurs

The north Londoners are said to be identifying transfer targets ahead of the looming January window. New sporting director Johan Lange, who will now step into the shoes of Fabio Paratici after his arrival from Aston Villa, is tasked with strengthening Ange Postecoglou's squad. The Spurs boss has even admitted to already talking with Lange, but refuses to get drawn in to speculation at this stage.

"I've caught up with Johan, nothing too formal," said Postecoglou on Lange and his appointment at N17.

"I don't have the attention span for long meetings mate so it tends to be just casual chats with people. It's the best way to get my point across if I need to say anything. The good thing is he is in the building now so he's interacting with all the right people. The bit with me is the easy bit, it's about setting up the procedures and the structures to make sure he gets the department working the way he wants to get the right outcomes.

"As you said, Rob joining will help that. It is important they come in now. The January window, like for every club, is an important one."

The impact of Spurs' new transfer chief will be very interesting to follow, with reports suggesting that the club are already mapping out plans for the winter.

Tottenham identifying transfer targets

Since Lange's arrival, reports have suggested that the Lilywhites are prioritising the addition of a new centre-back. Tottenham's interest in Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth has been reported before, but their fondness has apparently remained after Lange. Indeed, Spurs are still targeting Kelly for January, with Tottenham interested in Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah also. As well as defensive reinforcements, new attacking options have been mooted too.

The likes of Al-Ittihad winger Jota and another Celtic's Matt O'Riley are thought to have admirers at Spurs, while there have been reports that Postecoglou is keen on Kerem Akturkoglu from Galatasaray. January could be an opportunity for Tottenham to invest and provide more fire to a possible title challenge, with one report now sharing news on a pretty ambitious new target.

Spurs eyeing Florian Wirtz move

According to information gathered by Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, Spurs are eyeing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen as a potential option. The 20-year-old is attracting interest from north London and all over Europe, and it is believed he'll command a price tag of around £70 million-£87 million.

Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz has been called "similar" to Son in playing style (Football Transfers), and he's starred under Xabi Alonso for Leverkusen so far this season. The club's sporting director, Simon Rolfes, has also branded the German an "extraordinary" player.

“Extraordinary player,” said Rolfes on Wirtz to Stats Perform.

“I saw him the first time when he was 13 and followed him all the time. Spoke with him before he moved to us, with the parents a lot of times and tried to convince them that it was the right step to come to us and accelerate his development. I and the whole club are very happy that he is with us."

£24m Arsenal star may now never play for the club again

The Carabao Cup was never going to be the main priority for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal this season.

Indeed, the Gunners have bigger fish to fry, namely the Premier League and, of course, their first entry into the Champions League for several years.

The north Londoners are currently unbeaten in league action but on the continental stage and now in the League Cup, they have been below par, excusing the thrashing of PSV.

In Lens, Arsenal dominated the ball in the early exchanges but conceded in front of a raucous home crowd, eventually losing the game after the going got tough. The same occurred at the London Stadium on Wednesday evening.

In the early phases of the game Arteta's side had over 60% of the ball but couldn't turn that into anything of note in the final third. An own goal from Ben White set the tone and from that moment onwards, Arsenal looked rather spooked. Apt on Halloween week.

A delightful second from Mohammed Kudus, coincidentally a man linked with Arsenal in the summer, put the tie out of reach before Jarrod Bowen's deflected effort sprawled past Aaron Ramsdale, a man visibly lacking confidence in east London.

A 3-1 defeat means Arsenal aren't in the hat for the quarter-finals and with it could go Ramsdale's career at the Emirates Stadium. Since David Raya displaced him between the sticks the EFL Cup is the only competition the England stopper has gained any minutes in.

Aaron Ramsdale's stats vs West Ham

This was a tremendous night for Ramsdale to prove himself to everyone. Arteta has clearly doubted his abilities, as too have several pundits. That said, the fans have stuck by a player who has provided the club with some memorable moments since signing.

There is a reason he was among the nominees for the best goalkeeper in the world at the recent Ballon d'Or awards. Think of that sprawling save to deny Mo Salah at Anfield last term, and then that point-blank stop to deny Ibrahima Konate from the resulting set-play. It was Ramsdale at his brilliant and mesmerising best.

That said, on the ball he leaves something to be desired, as does his ability to come and claim crosses. Both of those flaws were in evidence against the Hammers in midweek.

Ramsdale may well have won his one and only registered aerial battle in the game, but had he been stronger, the former Sheffield United no.1 may well have been able to do something about White's own goal.

That sounds harsh, however, particularly when you consider that had VAR been in play it may have been ruled out. Tomas Soucek had a hold of the Englishman's shirt which prevented him from getting to the near post to punch away.

Beyond that, he ended the game with a dismal long pass success, picking out just 1/8, a nice clipped ball into Kai Havertz. There is a feeling as well that Ramsdale may have done better for Bowen's strike.

A quick deflection off Jakub Kiwior didn't help the ex-Bournemouth star but his attempts to save the shot were bizarre to say the least.

In fairness, any 'keeper would have struggled to keep out all three of the goals on Wednesday but on a night where Ramsdale simply needed an easy night and a confidence-boosting win, he was the biggest loser from the club's Carabao nightmare.

The stats that show why Raya is better than Ramsdale

Much has been made about just how good Raya is in comparison to Ramsdale. With the naked eye, it is perhaps difficult to tell where the differences lie.

After all, the Brentford loanee hasn't been error or incident-free since arriving through the doors in the summer.

It was the Spaniard's stray pass that led to Lens' equaliser in the Champions League. It was his nervy playing out from the back that nearly sparked Gary Neville to pass out on commentary during Arsenal's win over Manchester City, and it was Raya's peculiar punch that nearly landed in his own net in Seville a week prior.

However, when you look at the numbers, it's clear why Arteta has been hellbent on picking the loanee ahead of Ramsdale.

Despite that rough opening 45 minutes against City, Raya has been superb with the ball at his feet, completing 79% of his passes and 93% of his passes inside Arsenal's half. His competition, meanwhile, has completed a worrying 60% of his passes throughout his two EFL Cup outings, and 90% of his passes inside their own half.

More stark has been the Spanish 'keeper's ability in the air, winning ten high claims and 100% of his aerial duels to Ramsdale's two in the Premier League.

This didn't particularly feel like a defining moment for the club's season, but it may well do for Ramsdale.

A move towards the exit door looms for the £24m man, whose chances of any minutes now are surely over. It's a sad end for one of the most likeable and bubbly personalities Arsenal have had in recent memory.

The Richarlison replacement at Spurs who’s scoring once every 37 mins on loan

Tottenham losing Harry Kane could have seen Spurs completely collapse, especially with a new manager at the helm in Ange Postecoglou who had zero Premier League experience as a head coach before taking on the job.

Yet, fast forward to ten games into the new top-flight campaign, Postecoglou's appointment has been a stroke of genius with the likes of Heung-min Son stepping up to the mark more than ever to fill in for their former star man leaving for Bayern Munich.

Still unbeaten with eight wins and two draws in the league, the South Korean forward's importance has intensified for Spurs – scoring eight times in these ten flawless matches, Kane's move to Bavaria pushed now to one side.

But, the high-flying morth Londoners would be threadbare in attack if Son was to pull up with a long-term injury.

Richarlison is another option as is new summer signing Alejo Veliz, yet Spurs could have a gem in their ranks who has been with the club since 2017 and could eventually displace both the Brazilian and Argentinian as the preferred back-up option.

Richarlison's numbers this season

An unsettled figure at Spurs under previous Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte – with the Italian routinely "scolding" the ex-Everton man after he asked for more game-time per an interview with talkSPORT – the 26-year-old has been granted his wish now under new boss Postecoglou to start more matches.

It doesn't mean the goals have followed suit, however, the Brazilian attacker only netting two goals so far for Spurs in all competitions.

Tottenham striker Richarlison.

His overall performances haven't been anything to write home about either, a 64-minute spell last time out against Crystal Palace saw Spurs' number nine trudge off disappointed with his own display at Selhurst Park – only winning two of ten ground duels on the night via Sofascore, alongside his only shot being dragged wide.

Costing Tottenham a sizeable £60m when arriving from Everton, his five goals and seven assists in total so far for Spurs do not justify this transfer fee from 46 games played.

It could leave Postecoglou searching for other players within his group to play up top, with 21-year-old Dublin-born striker Troy Parrott tipped for greatness.

Spurs' future Richarlison replacement

Scoring one goal every 37 minutes currently out on loan in the Netherlands, Parrott is certainly one to watch from a Tottenham perspective if Richarlison continues to misfire.

A journeyman in terms of the number of clubs he's starred with on loan – Excelsior Rotterdam is his current home, with the Irishman also featuring in the EFL with Milton Keynes Dons, Millwall and more – he'll hope and pray that his time to break into the Spurs first time mould comes soon.

Postecoglou will be keeping tabs on his player whilst he's an Excelsior loanee for sure, especially with Parrott's current goalscoring exploits in the Dutch first division.

He has three goals from seven appearances for his new Rotterdam-based outfit, often scoring late on as an impact substitute.

It would only take the Spurs prodigy 18 minutes against Pec Zwolle to score, the 21-year-old left unmarked from a free-kick to fire home in an unfortunate 4-2 loss.

Tottenham could do with more bodies in attack, and in Parrott, they have an energetic, clinical goalscorer who could be more than ready for a first-team berth over Richarlison if he continues to shine at senior level on loan.
