Sheffield Wednesday must rue “crucial” ace leaving for just £0

Sheffield Wednesday knew they were going to face an uphill battle playing away at table-topping Leicester City, but conceding after just four minutes was always going to make an already tough task even harder.

Abdul Fatawu capitalised on a poor Owls error playing out from the back to make it 1-0 early on, with Enzo Maresca's confident Foxes going on to clinch a 2-0 win after that.

Wednesday did try to get back into the contest with four shots on target to Leicester's three, but Danny Rohl's men must have been resigned to the fate of losing again in the Championship when Jamie Vardy hammered home a swift Foxes attack.

The Owls lack a direct threat going forward who can score a goal from nothing when the game is against them, with one ex-Wednesday man playing that role perfectly for his current employers ever since exiting Hillsborough.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's time at Wednesday

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's time with the Owls was short-lived, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man only lasting one season in South Yorkshire before seeking pastures new at the end of his short-term contract with the club.

Turning down an opportunity to stay put at Hillsborough – with the 31-year-old flat-out refusing to put pen to paper on an extension – this is a situation that will anger Rohl and Co still, considering what the winger has gone on to do in the division below with Derby County after waving the Owls goodbye.

Mendez-Laing wouldn't set the world alight in South Yorkshire however, only bagging two goals and helping himself to three assists from 19 appearances in total.

Yet, with the likes of Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama blowing hot and cold down the wings for Wednesday, Mendez-Laing could have been a useful head to have around the building now to give the Owls an injection of added creativity when needed.

Sheffield Wednesday flop has become a goal machine after leaving for £0

Sheffield Wednesday would love to have this potent striker back at the club.

Derby are the real winners at the expense of Wednesday's agony, managing to sign Mendez-Laing for nothing and helping turn the experienced asset into a machine at League One level after an unmemorable stint at Hillsborough.

Mendez-Laing's numbers at Derby

Ageing like a fine wine at Pride Park, alongside fellow veterans Conor Hourihane and James Collins, Mendez-Laing has been a key player for Paul Warne's Rams this season as they aim to return to the Championship come the end of April.

This season alone, the Derby number 11 has managed to amass an impressive nine goals and 15 assists from 36 appearances in all competitions, with one of those goals coming last time out as Warne's promotion-chasers won in comfortable fashion away at Exeter City.

Described as a "crucial" presence by football journalist Jacob Hackett for Warne this season off-the-back of these heroics, his continued star quality for Derby means the 5 foot 11 winger is now onto 43 goals and assists in total from 87 games for the club.

Wednesday would kill for a player of Mendez-Laing's calibre in their ongoing fight against the Championship drop now, rueing the forward's decision to walk away from South Yorkshire instead of just staying put.

Rohl and Co will hope the loan signings of Ian Poveda and Ike Ugbo can continue working wonders, steering the relegation-threatened Owls to a deserved 2-0 win over Birmingham City last time out on home turf.

Whereas, Mendez-Laing will aim to have the last laugh over his former employers by sealing promotion to the second tier with the Rams whilst Wednesday face the anxiety of keeping their heads above water in the division.

Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea "working" to sign striker who could replace Broja

Chelsea appear to be working behind the scenes to land a new forward who could end up replacing Armando Broja, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Armando Broja transfer update

So far this season, the 22-year-old hasn’t exactly nailed down a regular role under Mauricio Pochettino, missing parts of the campaign with two separate injuries. Broja has been limited to just seven starts in all competitions, with Nicolas Jackson the first-choice striker at Stamford Bridge. However, despite Jackson being currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, Chelsea could still sell Broja before the end of the month.

Chelsea ready move to sign "unbelievable" new star ahead of Real Madrid

This could be a major boost.

Jan 21, 2024

Reports have claimed that Crystal Palace, Fulham, West Ham and Wolves have all expressed their interest in the "powerful" Albanian, with Chelsea open to a deal for no less than £35m or on a loan with an obligation to buy.

Talking to GiveMeSport, Romano has now said that Chelsea would indeed be open to selling Broja on a permanent basis, with the Blues "actively working" on signing a potential replacement who could rival Jackson.

"There's plenty of interest and that may raise the price. But there is a point of difference between what the clubs predominantly want, which is a loan with an option or potentially an obligation, and Chelsea who would consider a permanent sale and ideally would like money that they can spend sooner rather than later. We've also heard reports that Chelsea could sell Broja regardless of whether they find a striker.

“I still think even if that is accurate, Chelsea are actively working on options because even if financially speaking it was right to let Broja go with no replacement this window, Pochettino may have other input. It would leave him with Nkunku, who can play further forward but is coming back from injury. It would leave him with Jackson who's at the African Cup of Nations and may need some rest when he returns in early February, and no other established striker should Broja go and not be replaced."

Chelsea striker rumours

The Blues have been linked with a number of attackers in recent weeks and may need to land one of these should Broja leave. One of the biggest names who could move to Stamford Bridge in 2024 is Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, however, a deal may not materialise until the summer despite the Nigerian being open to a move.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

Another high-profile name is Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, with rumours last week suggesting that the Blues had failed with an offer of around £73m.

Short-term solutions could therefore be looked at with the deadline fast approaching, and there were reports earlier in the window that four forwards offered to Chelsea were AZ Alkmaar’s Vangelis Pavlidis, Zenit St Petersburg’s Mateo Cassierra, Cercle Brugge’s Kevin Denkey and Atletico Mineiro’s Paulinho.

Former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, now at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad is another who has been linked with a move to Chelsea for the second half of the season, and following Romano’s claim, it wouldn’t be a shock if one of the attackers mentioned ends up in London before February 1.

Joe Root critical of 'substandard' Lord's pitch after avoiding embarrassment against Ireland

Joe Root, England’s captain, has described the Lord’s pitch as “substandard for a Test match” after seeing his side run through Ireland for 38 on the third morning, securing victory by 143 runs. England had been skittled for 85 themselves on the first day and Root suggested conditions were too heavily weighted in favour of seam-bowling.He also denied that England’s players had experienced difficulty lifting themselves for the four-day Test with Ireland, just ten days after winning the World Cup at the same ground, and described himself as “pretty confident” ahead of the Ashes, with the first Test starting in Birmingham on Thursday.”I don’t like saying this but the wicket was substandard for a Test match,” Root said. “I thought it wasn’t… not even close to a fair contest between bat and ball throughout the whole game.ALSO READ: Bayliss questions England’s ‘ruthlessness’ against lesser opponents“Australia will be thinking it’s doing a bit in England. It’s hard for anyone to read too much into this in very extreme conditions.”We weren’t at our best by any stretch. We managed certain periods very well. We were put under pressure by Ireland. They exploited the conditions on that first morning in particular extremely well. But we found a way to win a game. First innings, last innings, when you are getting scores like that, that tells a story in itself when the scores are as low as that on a surface that you play on.”Having been set 182 to win, Ireland were demolished for the seventh-lowest total in Test cricket, with Chris Woakes taking six wickets and Stuart Broad four, to wrap up the game inside three days and avert English embarrassment.”No, it wasn’t difficult to lift ourselves,” Root told Sky Sports. “Managing the schedule is part and parcel of international cricket now, I think you have to get used to it and find a way to manage individually. But it’s not always as straightforward as that, especially crossing formats. So it’s been good for us to play in this game and to play and get the result that we have at the end of it I think we’ll get a lot from it.”I thought Ireland were excellent throughout, I thought they bowled brilliantly in both innings and today I just thought we were excellent with the ball.”Joe Root looks on•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

With England set to name their Ashes squad on Saturday ahead of the first Test, Root said the hosts would be ready for the Australians.”Yeah, pretty confident,” Root said. “We’ll have a final meeting today at some point and make sure that we’re all very clear but it’s an exciting time for everyone. It’s nice to go into it with this this win and to have managed some pressure situations, come out the other side. But you know Ashes cricket is very special and the guys will be getting very much their minds around that now, the next few days off and then when we turn to practice it will be all go.”Root said England’s 31-run defeat of India at Edgbaston last year, when the tourists needed a second-innings 194 to win and were bowled out for 162, had given his side confidence that they could manage a similar pressure scenario on a pitch he described as “very bowler friendly”. And he was happy to be able to throw the ball to seasoned campaigners Woakes and Broad to get the job done while Sam Curran and Olly Stone – who took three wickets each in Ireland’s first innings – went unused in the second.”They were outstanding,” Root said of Woakes and Broad. “And it’s nice to know, you’ve got two guys that didn’t even get an opportunity today that also contributed very well throughout the game. It’s very pleasing, especially with the ball and the way that we managed certain situations, certain pressure situations through the game, I thought we managed pretty well.”It wasn’t by any stretch, a perfect game for us. But sometimes that can be a really important part in your learning for a team and I certainly think we’ll take a lot from this game.”

Tottenham clear they will bid for £150,000-per-week star who Redknapp loves

Tottenham have made it clear that they will bid for a £150,000-per-week "class act" this summer, according to a rival club insider.

Postecoglou keen on new midfielder at Spurs

Much has been made about manager Ange Postecoglou's desire to bring in a new midfield running man, with reports in January stating that the Australian wants a new running man who can alternate with James Maddison (Miguel Delaney).

Spurs make contract offer to sign star who nearly joined Pochettino in 2018

He publicly admitted to considering a Tottenham move.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 15, 2024

The most standout name to be regularly linked with a potential move to Spurs is Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, but the club have alternatives to the Englishman in case he puts pen to paper on a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey is one, with a report by David Ornstein in The Athletic claiming last month that Tottenham are big fans of the 22-year-old.

The homegrown ace can play further forward and in the middle of the park, with another appealing aspect being the fact Ramsey is also homegrown. Tottenham are said to be compiling a shortlist of summer targets already, and it appears a new midfielder may well be something to watch out for.

Jacob Ramsey for Aston Villa

Rodrigo Bentancur arguably hasn't rediscovered his very best form since returning from a serious ACL injury, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's future at Spurs has been up in the air for quite a while amid a consistent lack of starting opportunities for the Dane.

Both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have been mainstays under Postecoglou while impressing, but their trips to AFCON last month highlight just how much Spurs could do with quality alternatives to the duo.

Sharing news on another midfield star who Tottenham could well move for this summer, West Ham insider Claret & Hugh have a very interesting bit of detail on Spurs' plans for Lucas Paqueta.

Tottenham "clear" they will bid for Paqueta

According to C&H, Tottenham have made it clear they will bid for Paqueta alongside the likes of Arsenal, Aston Villa, Man United and Man City.

This will be once his investigation surrounding gambling breaches is cleared up, and while this could be a tricky deal to pull off given both West Ham and Spurs' rivalry, there is little denying the Brazilian's obvious quality.

Paqueta has bagged five goals and five assists across all competitions for David Moyes' side this season, with WhoScored listing him as their best-performing player by average match rating in the league.

Former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has also branded the £150,000-per-week star a "class act".

"Lucas Paqueta has been a class act for West Ham recently," said Redknapp to BetVictor last year (via football.london).

"West Ham are playing their best football of the season right now and the pairing of him and [Declan] Rice in the midfield is a big reason why."

Mohammad Amir's four wickets provide a reminder of what first-class game will miss

On what could well be his final first-class appearance, Pakistan seamer takes four wickets to evoke memories of his up-and-down red-ball career

Daniel Norcross at Canterbury19-Aug-2019KC & The Sunshine Band’s “Please Don’t Go” may not be everyone’s obvious earworm on an infuriatingly showery day that permitted only 43.2 overs to be bowled at Canterbury, but today was a little different. In all likelihood today was the penultimate chance anyone will get to watch one of the finest left-arm red ball pacemen of this era run through his box of bamboozling tricks.Mohammad Amir has called time on his Test career and is focusing on white-ball cricket from now on. It’s hard to blame him. Pakistan Test cricketers get paid poorly by comparison with their English, Indian and Australian counterparts, and in addition, Test match commitments can make them a less attractive prospect for Big Bash teams, CPL franchises and from next year, The Hundred sides. They are missing out on literally hundreds of thousands of pounds every year. It’s a lot of hard work, for little reward. And if you’re Pakistani, you’re toiling away for half your Test match career on seam-unfriendly pitches in the UAE. You’re not even going through all this to play in front of a home crowd.Amir’s critics will say that he owes Pakistan cricket a debt of gratitude after playing a significant role in its darkest hour; the spot-fixing scandal of 2010. Unlike Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, he has been given a second chance and has thrown it back in the face of people who went out on a limb to rehabilitate him. You can see their point, but you can surely also see his.And if you can see both sides, you will also be feeling a great sadness. Amir has picked up 258 first-class wickets at an average of 22.7. At his best, he slinks to the crease with a graceful and rhythmic action before pinning bewildered batsmen with his deceptive late swing. Here against Kent he plucked four poles from the ground to remove Zak Crawley, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Heino Kuhn (all yesterday) and Ollie Rayner (this morning). He’s not Wasim Akram, but it often feels as if he might have come close to emulating the great man had he not erred so catastrophically as a callow 18-year-old.On his return after a five-year ban there were a lot of people who didn’t want him back, and there are many who will not be sorry to see him go. In truth he has only intermittently touched the heights that he reached as a teenager. His place in Pakistan’s World Cup squad this summer was far from secure, but his performances in that tournament spoke of a man back to near his best. This is the only red-ball match Amir will play for Essex yet his contribution has consolidated Essex’s grip at the top of the table. Kent have played tough, nuggety cricket this season and can rightly be proud of their secure mid-table position. Resistance today came in the form of a 65-run 9th wicket partnership between Harry Podmore, who finished on 54 not out, and Matt Milnes. They may yet get out of this match with a draw, but a first innings total of 226 doesn’t feel enough at this stage against an Essex side with in-form batsmen and the small matter of Simon Harmer eying up a fourth day pitch with relish. They have also been hit by the news that Adam Milne is out for the season. With Mohammad Nabi having rejoined the Afghan squad, Kent are now without an overseas player for the remainder of their T20 and Championship campaigns.Sam Cook’s five-wicket haul may not have been as spectacular as Amir’s stump-busting bursts, but he too continues to impress as Essex have brought together a collection of very fine players who don’t quite attract the attentions of the England selectors. There was just enough time to watch Darren Stevens beat Alastair Cook’s bat four times in an over as Essex scratched their way to 32 for 1. Stevens is 43. He is sixteen years Amir’s senior, a very different joy to watch and he wants to play at least one more year with a red ball in his hand.Sadly for us, and worryingly for the wider cricketing world, Mohammad Amir does not.

Joe Root defends James Anderson selection after injury undermines England attack

Captain describes injury as ‘freak’ occurrence as England are made to toil in absence of strike bowler

Andrew Miller05-Aug-2019Joe Root, England’s defeated Test captain, said that the selection of James Anderson had been a group decision, after his absence from the attack due to injury contributed significantly to England’s 251-run loss against Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes at Edgbaston.Despite coming through a number of fitness tests in the lead-up to the game, Anderson lasted just four overs on the first morning before reporting tightness in his right calf, the same muscle that he had torn while bowling for Lancashire in a Championship fixture in early July.In his absence, Australia were able to recover from 122 for 8 on the first day to set England an eventual fourth-innings target of 398, one that they never came close to challenging as they were rolled aside for 146 on the final day.”It does hurt, we’re bitterly disappointed,” Root said during the post-match presentations at Edgbaston. “I thought we played some really good cricket throughout the majority of the Test match. But credit to Australia for how they got back in it.”The major thorn in England’s side was the indomitable Steven Smith, whose twin innings of 144 and 142 added up to more than the eventual margin of victory. However, his second-innings dismissal, caught snicking a rare swinging ball from Chris Woakes, was an indication of what might have been had Anderson’s skill with the Dukes ball been available throughout the match.”It was two brilliant innings, we’ll have to keep working hard on getting him out,” said Root. “But it was obviously going to be hard as well, having lost Jimmy pretty early on, in terms of balancing the attack.”But these things happen in cricket and we’ve got to take it on the chin and move forward, and come back really hard at Lord’s.”However, Anderson is sure to be missing from the attack at Lord’s in just over a week’s time – even though Root demurred when asked the direct question, saying they would have to wait for the scans on his calf to be properly analysed. And as a consequence, the rationale of his selection for this game, having missed the one-off match against Ireland, is bound to come under scrutiny.”It was a group decision in terms of the selection of him,” said Root. “He passed all the fitness tests. and it’s just one of those freak things that can happen in in cricket. It’s disappointing, but we’ve got to try and respond to that and make sure that we get things exactly how we want them at Lord’s.”Jofra Archer, who appeared as a substitute fielder during the Edgbaston Test, is an obvious name in the frame to replace Anderson and make his Test debut, having had a chance to rest the side strain that hampered him during the World Cup. But Root said that that decision, too, would have to wait until he had proven his red-ball fitness with a second XI outing for Sussex against Gloucestershire this week.James Anderson shows some discomfort•Getty Images

“We’ll have to wait and see how he shapes up as well,” said Root. “He’s going away tomorrow to get some cricket in, get some overs in. We don’t have to make any shotgun decisions in terms of selection. We got plenty of time before the next game. It’s really important that we’re very clear on how we want to go about it.”On England’s final-day meltdown, in which they lost all ten wickets inside two sessions as Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon shared the spoils, Root said that he would not be over-analysing the final performance.”I think we were bowled out today, to be brutally honest. It was high-class bowling, we were made to work very hard for our wickets. And I think we got to look further back into the Test match for where we could have been slightly better.”Root also insisted that the euphoria of England’s World Cup win was not a factor in England’s lacklustre start to the Ashes.”I think that’s a bit of an excuse to be honest. We played some good stuff throughout the game, we just didn’t do it for long enough and we didn’t take our chance at the start, when we had them in that position.”Nevertheless, a week off until the Lord’s Test was welcome, he added.”It gives us time to get away, regroup, and make sure that we’re really clear on how we want to approach that Test match. And make sure that this [result] doesn’t have a hangover effect going into the next game.”

Andriy Lunin's had a nightmare! Real Madrid goalkeeper puts in woeful display as Romania overpower toothless Ukraine at Euro 2024

Romania's Euro 2024 campaign is off to a stunning start as they ran out 3-0 winners against Ukraine – with a bit of help from goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

    TELL ME MORE

The goalkeeper had a vital role in the game, but not in the way he would have wanted as he put Romania in the ascendancy in the first half despite his Ukraine dominating possession with 76 per cent in the first 30 minutes. Lunin's terrible clearance fell to Dennis Man outside the box and he squared it to Nicolae Stanciu for the captain to send it sailing into the top corner with a perfect finish.

Ukraine pushed forward after the opener but were unable to get a dangerous shot off and ended up finishing the half without a shot on target. Instead, it was Romania who came closest again as Denis Dragus' long-range effort was knocked wide of the post. His team almost netted another stupendous goal when the subsequent corner caught Lunin off guard and hit the woodwork.

Eight minutes into the second half, Romania doubled their lead when a challenge saw the ball fall in front of Razvan Marin and he smashed it first time from outside the box, sending it low under the hands of Lunin and into the bottom corner.

The fun kept coming for Romania after that. They were full of confidence against a Ukraine team whose belief had plummeted and before long it was 3-0 as Man's low ball into the middle of the box was diverted in by Dragus.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Dennis Man is the first Romania player to provide two assists in a game at a major tournament since national hero Gheorghe Hagi did so against Colombia in the 1994 World Cup. Also, this game is just the second in which Romania have scored two or more goals in a game at a European Championship, having previously done so in a 3-2 win against England at Euro 2000.

    THE MVP

Parma forward Man was a vital figure in Romania's impressive victory. Not only did he set up the first goal, he jinked his way into the Ukraine box and laid off a perfect pass to Dragus to knock home the third and truly wrap up the win. His movement into the box helped Romania find a way to threaten the Ukraine goal throughout the match.

    THE BIG LOSER

Despite coming off the back of a fine season in which he won La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid, Ukraine goalkeeper Lunin could hardly have had a worse opening game to Euro 2024. He needlessly gave away the ball to provide Romania with the chance to go ahead through Stanciu's stunner and then let the ball slip below his hands to put Romania well and truly in the driving seat of this game.
