Spurs exploring deal to immediately replace £2m-a-year first team player

Tottenham are exploring a deal to replace one member of their first team in the coming days, it has been reported.

Spurs face slow summer

After their fifth placed Premier League finish in Ange Postecoglou's first season in charge, business has been slow in both directions in north London. Archie Gray and Timo Werner (on loan) remain the only senior additions to the side so far, despite the new season kicking off in just 10 days time.

On the flip side, though eight players have left, they have only received fees for Joe Rodon and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer so far. Now, they are looking to ramp up their business in the coming weeks, and are already searching for replacements for one man.

Tottenham set to sell defender

That comes as transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that negotiations with AC Milan over a move for Tottenham defender Emerson Royal is "at the final stages", with both sides keen to get it "done in the next days" and a fee of £13m plus add ons being mooted.

The full back was signed on transfer deadline day two years ago in a deal worth 30m euros (£25m), with the Brazilian penning a £40,000 a week (£2m a year) deal in north London.

However, he has struggled to nail down a first team spot following the arrival of Pedro Porro, who appears Ange Postecoglou's clear first choice, and as a result the Brazilian has opted to depart the club.

With Spurs now ready to sell him in a deal worth a reported 15m euros (£13m) plus add ons, they are set to make a significant loss (£10m+) on the fullback, though for accounting purposes they will make a profit on the 25-year-old.

Emerson has made no secret of his desire to leave this summer amid long-term interest from Milan, explaining: “AC Milan? It’s a reference point for all Brazilians. I want to play on a regular basis. I don’t want to sit on the bench.”

In anticipation of his departure, Romano adds that Tottenham have already "started exploring" deals for a new right back this summer and will be working on exactly that this week, with Fiorentina's Michael Kayode among those having been linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It is not just at right back that things might be set to heat up for the Lilywhites, with Romano also moving to ease the fears of fans who feel that business has been slow in North London to date.

Discussing Wolves winger Pedro Neto specifically, Romano explained: "He is one of the players they’ve always had on the list. Let’s see if they will decide to accelerate, but I expect Tottenham to be busy starting from next week.”

They remain on the hunt for a striker as well as at least one full back and another winger before the window closes on August 30th.

"Accomplished" £27k-a-week Rangers player now closing in on loan exit

An "accomplished" Rangers player is reportedly closing in on a move away from Ibrox this summer.

Rangers transfer news

This has been a hugely productive summer transfer window for the Gers, with a host of new names brought in, adding significant depth to Philippe Clement's squad in the process. Mohamed Diomande made his loan switch a permanent one, while the likes of Robin Propper and Hamza Igamane have also come in, among others.

That's not to say that there couldn't be some late business at Rangers, with rumours continuing to swirl. Norwich City striker Abu Kamara has emerged as a transfer target for the Scottish Premiership club, with personal terms involving the 21-year-old not expected to be an issue.

Meanwhile, the Gers are believed to have submitted a bid for Almeria defender Kaiky, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the offer is a sizeable £6.5m. It has been rejected, though, so an increased amount will need to be tabled.

Fiorentina attacker Josip Brekalo is also on Rangers' radar, having been made surplus to requirements by the Serie A club, and contact has been made over a summer move. Now, it appears an outgoing regarding a current Ibrox ace is "imminent".

"Accomplished" Rangers player heading for exit

According to a report from The Daily Record, Ben Davies is set to complete a loan move from Rangers to Birmingham City.

The deal involving the 29-year-old could include a buy option at the end of the season should he impress enough at the League One club for them to retain his services.

Ben Davies at Rangers.

Birmingham have been big spenders this summer following their relegation from the Championship, parting with over €15m (£12.7m) to date – far more than any of their League One rivals as they seek an immediate promotion.

This feels like the right decision for all parties, with Davies not considered an important part of Clement's plans moving forward, and never truly feeling like a key man since arriving from Liverpool in the summer of 2022.

That's not to say that the English centre-back isn't a good player, with none other than Jurgen Klopp heaping praise on him when he joined Rangers, saying:

"This presents a proper opportunity to demonstrate his quality and composure. As a person, he’s as good a guy as you could hope to meet. It’s a smart piece of recruitment from Giovanni van Bronckhorst, to be honest. Perfect for all parties. He has himself an accomplished defender, who is entering his peak years and whose character is top-drawer."

The hope is that Davies enjoys a successful stint on loan at Birmingham prior to completing a permanent move this time next year, allowing Rangers to receive a fee in the process.

ByBrett Worthington Aug 24, 2024

The £27,000-a-week defender is contracted at Ibrox until 2026, meaning that next summer will be the last realistic opportunity for that to happen, so it does feel as though he has played his final match for the Gers.

Jack Leach discipline, Tom Abell dash keep Somerset in the hunt

A spirited fightback with the ball and the intervention of bad light in mid-afternoon left the opening game of Somerset’s County Championship season finely poised, with Middlesex seven final-day wickets away from victory but wondering how they have managed to let such a strong position slip. The protagonists of the revival were Jack Leach and Josh Davey, who set a dramatic collapse in motion with three wickets each, but Tom Abell could yet propel himself into the lead role if he can build on his overnight score of 62. Middlesex are still favourites, not least with the prospect of another probing new-ball burst from Tim Murtagh and Ethan Bamber in tandem as the climax approaches on Sunday afternoon, but that status is significantly more precarious than it was an hour into the third day.If Somerset manage to pull the chase off, they will have Leach to thank for keeping them in the game. Bowling spin in England in the second week of April is a hazardous occupation, and Leach regularly found himself blowing hot air into his hands to avoid numbness from the chill that swept across St John’s Wood. But by conceding fewer than two runs an over in both innings, he has allowed Somerset to rotate their seamers from the other end and to maintain a sense of control throughout their time in the field.Leach’s method was characteristically unremarkable. He has bowled at a slightly faster pace than usual, with a defensive line and field, and has rarely looked to spin the ball, instead relying on natural variation to induce errors. While Middlesex’s batsmen didn’t look to attack him, match figures of 4 for 61 from 33.4 overs will provide England with some optimism about Leach’s ability to perform the holding role that is so often required in home conditions – and his plucky defensive contribution to a last-wicket stand of 83 with Marchant de Lange on the second afternoon may yet prove vital to the outcome.Middlesex were 113 for 3 and driving towards a substantial lead when Leach came into the attack, but were caught sleeping at the wheel as they gave up their final seven wickets for just 30 runs, all in relatively innocuous fashion. Leach set things in motion, inducing a prod forward from Robbie White which ended up in the hands of first slip, and when Stevie Eskinazi – who had completed a gritty half-century in the gloom – fell to a superb diving catch from Craig Overton at second slip off Davey, the collapse was underway.Related

Davey struck twice in four balls, pinning John Simpson and Toby Roland-Jones lbw, while Leach’s disciplined spell was rewarded when he trapped Martin Andersson in front with an arm ball. Lewis Gregory had Tom Helm caught behind, his solitary second-innings wicket following a five-for in the first, and Bamber had ideas above his station when attempting a slog-sweep off Leach only to be pinned leg-before. The meek slide earned Middlesex a ticking-off from their coach Stuart Law, who “told them up there that it wasn’t acceptable” after they “had them by the throat”, but owed as much to the quality of bowling as anything else. That left Somerset needing 285, and when Tom Lammonby poked his first ball from Bamber to slip, it looked an insurmountable task. There are few tougher tests for a top-order batsman than opening the batting against Murtagh at Lord’s under floodlights and full cloud cover, and Abell and Tom Banton both rode their luck early on. They played and missed repeatedly outside the off stump, but they escaped unscathed, and were able to up the tempo against Middlesex’s change bowlers.Banton may reflect that his innings of 37 was a missed opportunity to press on, but in the context of his recent struggles, it was a significant score. His winter was meant to include a breakthrough at the IPL, another eye-catching Big Bash season, and a starring role at the PSL to further his T20 World Cup credentials; in fact, he played twice each for Kolkata Knight Riders and Quetta Gladiators, withdrew from his BBL stint citing bubble fatigue, opted out of the IPL auction and ended his time in Pakistan in self-isolation following a positive Covid test. He was not at his fluent best here, and remains something of an unknown quantity in red-ball cricket, but a couple of crisply-struck boundaries served a reminder of his ability to time the ball.It was Abell whose contribution was most significant. After struggling initially against the new ball, he scored at nearly a run a ball from that point, with a crashed cut off Helm the pick of his shots. Having himself received two chances during his first-innings 165, Sam Robson put down two catches at second slip, but neither would prove costly. Banton and James Hildreth were both aggrieved to have been given out lbw to Roland-Jones, but his two breakthroughs pegged Somerset back just as their target had started to look attainable. And so the final day promises much, with Somerset’s batting depth giving their supporters reason to believe but Middlesex’s knowing their side are seven good balls away from an upset against the bookies’ favourites for Group Two. That the conclusion will unfold against the backdrop of 30,000 empty white seats rather than an eager Sunday crowd does this match a grave injustice.

Last-gasp move: Leeds on the verge of signing a "top" Kamara upgrade

Leeds United are looking to make it successive wins in the Championship when they play host to Hull City at Elland Road in their fourth league game of the season on Saturday.

The Whites beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 last week, thanks to goals from Brenden Aaronson and Dan James, and are now preparing to take on the Tigers in West Yorkshire.

Before that game, however, there is the small matter of the last two days of the summer transfer window for Daniel Farke and his recruitment team to contend with.

Leeds have been dealt many blows in recent months as key players have moved on, with Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville, and Archie Gray all snapped up by Premier League clubs, whilst Glen Kamara completed a switch to Ligue 1 with Rennes.

Farke has been able to dip into the market to add to his squad, though, with the signings of Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rodon, Largie Ramazani, Joe Rothwell, and Manor Solomon.

The Whites are not done there and look set to make further moves before the summer transfer window slams shut on Friday night, with a central midfielder said to be on their wishlist.

Leeds set to sign midfield star

According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Leeds United are set to complete a last-gasp deal to sign Fortuna Dusseldorf central midfielder Ao Tanaka, who he described as a "top" player.

The reporter claims that a fee of €4m (£3.4m) has been agreed between the two clubs and the Whites are now due to bolster their midfield ranks with this late swoop.

Plettenberg adds that the Japan international is set to sign a contract with the English side through to the end of the 2027/28 campaign, committing to four years with the club.

The German journalist also reveals that the 25-year-old maestro will undergo a medical in Leeds on Thursday ahead of his official unveiling as Farke's new signing.

It was, though, reported by the Daily Mail recently that the Fortuna midfielder has a release clause in his contract, which means that he could have been signed for £2.65m.

However, this latest update suggests that the Whites are due to pay a little bit more than that, potentially as it would allow them to stagger the payments over multiple years, instead of it all being upfront.

The Daily Mail added that the West Yorkshire outfit have been looking to add to their midfield ranks since Kamara's move to Rennes, and Tanaka could now come in as an upgrade on the Ligue 1 ace.

Glen Kamara's performances for Leeds

Leeds swooped to sign the central midfielder from Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers at the start of the 2023/24 campaign, and he enjoyed a fine year with the club.

The Finland international worked his way into the starting XI and became a key player for Farke in the team's run to the Championship play-off final.

His athleticism and reliability in possession made him an ideal fit for the German's possession-based side, as he turned into a metronomic figure in midfield for the Whites.

Duel success rate

58%

As you can see in the table above, Kamara used his athleticism and strength to win the majority of his physical duels across the pitch last season.

However, the 28-year-old dynamo only contributed with three direct goal involvements, and failed to score a single goal, in 37 appearances in the division, which shows that he did not make a big impact in the final third.

Kamara was impressive in possession in deeper positions, however, as he ranked within the top 2% of midfielders in the Championship for pass accuracy (92.7%) and the top 6% for progressive passes (6.87) per 90.

This shows that he was a reliable passer, who rarely gave the ball away, and a midfielder who could progress play by passing between the lines to find teammates in dangerous positions.

Overall, Kamara provided a calming and progressive presence in the middle of the park but let himself down by not making a greater impact in the final third as either a scorer or a creator of goals, and that is where Tanaka could come in as an upgrade for the Whites.

Why Ao Tanaka would be a Glen Kamara upgrade

Firstly, a fee of £2.65m – if they activate his release clause – could be a bargain for Leeds, when you consider that Rennes reportedly paid £8.4m to sign the Finnish maestro.

The Japanese ace could come in as a relatively cheap, in comparison to Kamara's sale, signing for the Whites, as well as being an excellent signing if he can translate his form from the 2. Bundesliga over to the Championship.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Tanaka ranked within the top 14% of midfielders in the second division in Germany for progressive passes (5.66) per 90 – 1.21 fewer per 90 than Kamara, who attempted 11.19 more passes per 90.

This suggests that the Fortuna star could provide a similar number of progressive passes each game in a Leeds team that offers him more chances to get on the ball and play passes forward for his teammates.

Whilst being similar in that regard, Tanaka could come in as an upgrade on Kamara because of his ability to make things happen in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, the Fortuna maestro was directly involved in ten goals in 30 matches in the 2. Bundesliga last season, which shows that he can provide quality as a scorer and a creator of goals.

His return of three assists from six 'big chances' created also suggests that his teammates let him down at times with their wasteful finishing.

Tanaka, who journalist Bence Bocsák described as "underrated", could come in and offer a similar defensive and progressive presence in midfield, whilst offering far more in the final third.

Imagine him & Tanaka: Leeds in the hunt to sign "clinical" £125k-p/w ace

Leeds United are reportedly closing in on a signing to bolster their options in the middle of the park before the end of the summer transfer window.

The Whites have agreed a €4m (£3.4m) deal with Fortuna Dusseldorf to sign central midfielder Ao Tanaka before the deadline on Friday night.

He is set to undergo a medical at Thorp Arch before being unveiled as the club's latest signing, joining Joe Rothwell, Joe Rodon, Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle, Largie Ramazani, and Manor Solomon.

Tanaka may not be the last addition of the window, however, as Daniel Farke's side have been linked with an interest in a forward from the Premier League.

Leeds in the hunt for Premier League striker

Speaking on talkSPORT, as relayed by GIVEMESPORT, journalist Darren Witcoop revealed that Leeds are one of the teams in the hunt to sign Danny Ings from West Ham United.

The reporter claimed that the English centre-forward wants to play regular football and is not in the long-term plans under Julen Lopetegui, which could open the door to an exit this week.

Danny Ings for West Ham

Witcoop added that the Whites and Burnley could both be options in the Championship for the former Southampton star, and stated that Leeds are in the mix to secure his signature.

Farke could land a dream partner for Tanaka at the top end of the pitch by sealing a late swoop for Ings, although it remains to be seen how viable a deal is for the £125k-per-week number nine.

Why Ings and Tanaka would be a dream duo

Firstly, the Japan international is a central midfielder who has the mentality and quality to make things happen at the top end of the pitch for his side.

In the 2. Bundesliga last season, the 25-year-old maestro scored seven goals and created six 'big chance' in 24 starts, which shows that he can make an impact in the final third as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

Ings, who was once described as "clinical" by journalist Leanne Prescott, has not enjoyed the best time with West Ham, with four goals in 53 games, but his previous form for Aston Villa and Southampton shows that the quality is there for him to be a prolific scorer.

As you can see in the table above, the 32-year-old forward, prior to the 2023/24 campaign, was a reliable source of goals and assists when selected as a starter in the Premier League.

Ings, who has scored 71 goals from 66.27 xG in his top-flight career, is a consistent finisher who has not had the best of times at the London Stadium and a move to Elland Road, dropping down to the Championship, could help him to rediscover his touch in front of goal.

Having a midfielder like Tanaka, who can pick up some of the goalscoring flak whilst also creating 'big chances' for his teammates, could help the English ace, which is why they could be a dream pair of signings for Farke.

Imagine him & Gordon: Newcastle prepare bid for £30m signing after Guehi

Marc Guehi has been a player constantly linked with a move to join Newcastle United this summer, with Eddie Howe desperately looking to bolster his defensive unit ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

It was reported earlier this week that the Magpies had a second bid rejected for the England international, with a third expected in the coming days.

Oliver Glasner’s side value the 24-year-old at around £65m – a deal that could surpass the fee paid for Alexander Isak back in the summer of 2022.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Guehi has been the most rumoured arrival at St James’ Park in recent weeks, understandably given the huge sum and quality he could provide to the Magpies backline.

However, he could be joined by a fellow Englishman, with Howe’s side advancing a deal to sign another attacking talent to push towards a top-four finish once again this season.

Newcastle to make bid for £30m talent

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Newcastle are preparing an offer to sign Chelsea winger Noni Madueke to try and complete Howe’s three-man forward line on Tyneside.

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke

The 22-year-old has previously been linked with a move to join the Magpies, but the Blues’ deal to sign Pedro Neto could hand them a boost in the race for his signature.

The report states that Enzo Maresca’s side could be willing to part ways with the former PSV man for £30m this summer to try and combat their heavy spending during the transfer window.

Madueke could be the perfect replacement for Miguel Almiron who’s been subject to interest from MLS side Charlotte FC, with multiple Saudi Arabian sides still in the race to sign the Paraguayan this summer.

The Chelsea man could form a deadly partnership with one forward who has recently impressed under Howe at St James’ Park – potentially taking his attack to the next level in 2024/25.

Why Madueke would be perfect for Gordon at Newcastle

After an impressive campaign which saw him register 21 goal contributions in his 35 league appearances, it’s no surprise to see Anthony Gordon touted with a big-money move this summer.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon

However, the club will be doing everything in their power to keep hold of the 23-year-old, with Gordon having a huge say in their hunt for a return to Champions League football.

He’s demonstrated his qualities in recent months on Tyneside, scoring at will and creating frequent opportunities for his teammates – with the winger potentially forming an excellent partnership with Madueke should he arrive at the club before the end of the window.

The “crazy” talent, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has produced some phenomenal numbers that could see the former Everton ace dramatically improve his goalscoring tally from 2023/24.

He also managed 6.5 progressive carries and 3.2 successful take-ons, demonstrating the qualities that he possesses in the final third, undoubtedly improving the options available to Howe’s disposal.

This season is a huge one for Newcastle to try and secure European football after narrowly missing out on a place at the end of the previous campaign.

Madueke would be an excellent pickup for £30m, allowing Gordon to bolster his already impressive tallies whilst also completing the club’s trio at the top end of the pitch.

Newcastle now in talks to loan out player they rejected £15m bid for

Newcastle United are believed to be in ongoing talks which would rid themselves of player who they rejected a £15m bid for earlier in the year, according to a new transfer claim.

Frustrating summer at Newcastle

The Magpies may not have been wholly convincing yet this season, but they have still picked up seven points from a possible nine in their opening three Premier League matches. Sunday's 2-1 win at home to Tottenham felt like a big result and the hope is that Eddie Howe's men can kick on further after the international break.

It was a frustrating summer in the transfer market at Newcastle, however, with Howe hinting at his dissatisfaction at not being backed enough financially, and failing to improve his squad enough in the process.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

Lewis Hall was the most expensive addition from Chelsea, but even he was already on loan at St James' Park last season, and it could be a struggle for a top-four finish to materialise in the league, given the lack of stellar additions at the manager's disposal.

While the summer window has now slammed shut in England, some leagues in other countries are still able to sign and sell players, which has led to a key Newcastle exit update emerging.

Newcastle could loan out "unbelievable" player

According to a fresh update from Sky Sports, Newcastle could allow Kieran Trippier to leave on loan this month, having rejected a £15m bid from Bayern Munich for his services back in the January transfer window.

In fact, an exit could happen in the next fortnight while the international break is taking place, with Turkish trio Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Eyupspor all making "enquiries" about the England international and holding ongoing talks with the Tyneside outfit.

At this point, it does feel as though Trippier's time at Newcastle will come to an end in the coming weeks, having found himself down the pecking order under Howe as time has gone on, being limited to only 32 minutes of action in the league so far this season.

There is no doubt that the 33-year-old has been a brilliant signing for the Magpies, though, with none other than Alan Shearer waxing lyrical over him in the past: "Some of the balls he was putting into the box were just unbelievable. What a signing he has been for Newcastle, he’s in great form."

Given his age, it feels like the right time for Trippier to move on, however, allowing Newcastle to look to the future and continue using younger options instead of him. It will also let him enjoy regular playing time again, as he looks to kick on in the autumn of his career.

Newcastle must regret selling £13m star who's now worth more than Tonali

1 ByRoss Kilvington Sep 3, 2024

Should he impress out on loan, a permanent exit next summer would then make perfect sense, considering the England international would only have one year remaining on his current deal at that point, but it may be frustrating from an Financial Fair Play perspective to see him leave on loan for nothing when they could have bagged themselves £15m earlier this year.
