Arsenal wanted "incredible" England star but signed Odegaard instead

Mikel Arteta has utterly transformed Arsenal during his time in the hot seat.

When he took over, the Gunners were an aimless side drifting towards mid-table mediocrity, but five years later, they’re contesting their third Premier League title race on the bounce.

It’s not just through the Spaniard’s tactical nous, leadership and man management that he’s turned the North Londoners around, but also his recruitment.

Alongside Edu Gaspar, he’s overseen the signing of several sensational talents in recent years, such as Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, but his best acquisition so far has been Martin Odegaard. However, in another world, it might not have even happened, as before the Norwegian joined on a permanent deal, the club were keen on another talented midfielder.

Odegaard's Arsenal career

Odegaard first joined Arsenal on a six-month loan from Real Madrid in January 2021, and while he didn’t blow the roof off the Emirates in those six months, in which he racked up four goals and assists in 20 appearances, he did enough to impress Arteta and Co, who proceeded to spend £30m on him that summer.

martin-odegaard-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-jeremy-doku

Since then, the 25-year-old has gone from strength to strength in North London, making a total of 156 appearances for the club, in which he has scored 35 goals and provided 25 assists, equating to an impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.6 games.

On top of producing a regular supply of goal involvements and doing things with the ball at his feet that few other players could even dream of, the Drammen-born maestro has become one of the core leaders of the team and was named club captain in July 2022 at just 23 years old.

Odegaard’s importance to the team has been made even more explicit this season, as following an injury he suffered on international duty in September, the Gunners have looked far less creative in games and have struggled to break down opposition sides in a way they didn’t last year.

Overall, it’s hard to imagine where Arsenal would be today without Odegaard, so it’s good that Arteta and Edu signed him over a talented England international they were interested in during the summer of 2021.

Arsenal's interest in James Maddison

Yes, the English midfielder in question is none other than Tottenham Hotspur co-vice-captain James Maddison.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison

However, two years before he joined the white side of North London, it was Arsenal who were most interested in his services, with a report from Sky Sports confirming that the Gunners were keen to sign him a few weeks before they eventually bought Odegaard.

With the Norwegian through the door, Arteta and Co understandably turned their attentions to other areas of the team, and the Leicester City star remained in the midlands for another two seasons, where, following the Foxes’ relegation in 22/23, he moved to N17 for a fee of around £40m.

However, while the “incredible” midfielder, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, had just scored ten goals and provided nine assists for a recently relegated team, he failed to have the same impact in North London and ended his debut season for the Lilywhites with a middling tally of four goals and nine assists in 28 league games.

In contrast, Arteta’s dynamic captain had just enjoyed another stellar season down the Seven Sisters Road, in which he scored eight goals and provided ten assists in 35 league games and came within just two points of lifting the title.

In his defence, Maddison has looked bright in moments this season and has a haul of two goals and three assists in nine games, but he was also hooked at halftime against West Ham United and looked bereft of ideas in the defeat to Crystal Palace last week.

Ultimately, both midfielders are undeniably talented and can change games in a moment, but if you were to ask Arsenal fans if they’d rather have Odegaard at the club or Maddison, you’d be hard-pressed to find many who’d pick the latter.

The Norwegian has shown that he can do everything the Englishman can but also adds leadership and consistency to the mix, so it was a great decision from Arteta and Edu in 2021 to sign him over the Leicester star.

"Big" – Sky Sports man impressed as 49ers agree new Leeds deal with Adidas

Former Leeds United goalkeeper and current Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has been full of praise for the latest off-field deal that the 49ers have seemingly agreed at Elland Road.

49ers agree key Leeds deal

Whilst Leeds’ promotion failure led to a summer exodus of significant talent, the 49ers deserve credit for how they reinvested to form a squad still capable of securing their place in the Premier League. The likes of Ao Tanaka and Largie Ramazani, as well as several others, all arrived to hand Daniel Farke a major boost and replace stars such as Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray.

The Whites haven’t adjusted right away, however, sitting as low as fifth, albeit just three points adrift of league-leaders Sunderland who earned a last-gasp point thanks to Illan Meslier’s moment to forget last time out.

Whilst Leeds continue to find their feet on the pitch though, the 49ers have seemingly made a significant move away from the action after agreeing to extend their current Leeds deal with Adidas until at least the end of the 2025/26 season.

In what is only a positive for the Whites, former goalkeeper and current Sky Sports pundit Robinson reacted to the news, telling MOT Leeds News: “It’s a huge sportswear manufacturer with an incredible history, one of if not the biggest alongside Nike. For a club like Leeds United to have that affinity and a sponsor like Adidas is big.

Leeds wanted to sign £50m "warrior" for Bielsa, they got Koch instead

Leeds United will rue not getting this major deal done.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 11, 2024

“The second kit, the yellow one, has been a huge success this season. Going back to the old badge and the yellow colour, touching on Leeds’ history, the second kit has been a huge, huge success.

“Having that relationship with a manufacturer such as Adidas is only good for a club the size of Leeds, who want to develop as a club, as a brand and as a business. It just shows growth.”

Leeds must match Adidas deal with Championship promotion

Clearly still seen as one of England’s biggest clubs despite their place in the Championship, Leeds must now match the ambition of Adidas and earn promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking this season.

The Yorkshire club have been out of luck at times in the current campaign, on both the mistake front and the injury front, but the “growth” – as Robinson put it – that they’ve undergone away from the action courtesy of Adidas may well act as a springboard towards success on the pitch.

Once the latest international break comes to an end, Leeds have the task of hosting a Sheffield United side who sit level on 19 points with league-leaders Sunderland and just three points ahead of those at Elland Road. Secure three points and suddenly Farke’s side will be vying for an early place in the automatic promotion places in the Championship.

The United flop, who joined Betis on loan in the January transfer window, has made a bright start to his journey in Spain. After setting up for a goal on his debut for the club in their 2-2 draw against Athletic Club last week, the Brazilian scored his maiden goal in the club's 3-2 defeat at Celta Vigo on Saturday.

  • WHAT ANTONY SAID

Antony was left angry after the result as he told : "It was very difficult. We started off very well by scoring two goals, but we have to change our mentality. We scored two but we have to be focused for the whole game, the 90 minutes. We have to work to be better. Betis must start and finish well. We have to work harder, and look at what we are not doing well to win the three points."

The 24-year-old also explained why some of the Real Betis players lost their tempers at full time as he added: "It's normal. All the players are angry. After the defeat against Celta, has Betis' objective changed? For the green and white there is no other goal than, day by day, training by training, game by game. We have to be focused on all the games to win the three points."

'I'm hopeful' – Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman optimistic as Lauren Hemp, Alex Greenwood & Georgia Stanway all look to recover from knee surgeries to make Euro 2025 squad

The Lionesses trio have all had knee surgeries in recent months, with Hemp's coming in November, Greenwood's in December and Stanway's at the end of January. With England's European title defence set to begin in early July, it is only natural that some fans are concerned about the fitness of these three key players ahead of this summer's tournament.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Stanway's absence in particular highlights a lack of depth in the deeper midfield roles, with the Bayern Munich star a real stalwart in the middle alongside Keira Walsh. There is a lot of competition for the No.10 position in front of that duo, but not so much in their own spots.

WHAT WIEGMAN SAID

Asked about the three absentees when revealing her squad for England's February fixtures, Wiegman said: "They'll be out for a while. Of course, you're always concerned when someone is injured. I think they're all in a good place at the moment but it will take a little longer, and I just hope the recovery goes really well and they get some minutes later on, and are fresh and fit and show the performances."

Asked if she is hopeful that Stanway, whose surgery was only at the end of January, will be fit or if she is a real doubt for the summer, Wiegman replied: "I'm hopeful. Georgia has a plan and she's really committed and very motivated to be back. She had surgery. That went well. I spoke to her and she's in a good place now. Of course, it's first about her health and then coming back, but she knows where she wants to go to, where she wants to be at a certain moment. Let's hope that goes that way."

Grace Clinton, the Manchester United starlet, is one player Wiegman has used in Stanway's box-to-box role before and the England boss reiterated on Tuesday that she believes the 21-year-old can excel there. Laura Blindkilde Brown, who won her first camp in December, is another versatile option who has operated in a deeper midfield role for Manchester City this season.

Newcastle make approach to sign "magical" talent with £13m release clause

A new transfer report has claimed that Newcastle United have made an approach for a “magical” footballer who has a release clause of just £13m.

Newcastle transfer news

Magpies supporters were perturbed by a largely quiet summer transfer window, with not enough extra quality brought in to boost Eddie Howe’s squad.

Thankfully, plenty of transfer rumours are doing the rounds regarding Newcastle, with sporting director Paul Mitchell reportedly sending scouts to watch Barcelona youngster Marc Casado in action. Their representatives are said to love what they have seen, with the 21-year-old starting his side’s stunning recent 4-0 win away to Real Madrid in La Liga.

Speaking of Mitchell, he apprently sees Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo as a dream target for the Magpies, and the Cameroonian is still being linked with a move to St James’ Park, albeit likely next summer instead of in the January window. He could be available for £50m, which could ultimately be a steal given his form this season, following eight goals in 10 appearances in the Premier League.

A new central defender would be welcomed by Newcastle supporters, given the lack of available options there currently, and Loic Bade has emerged as a reported target, as he continues to impress for Sevilla.

Newcastle make approach to sign "magical" ace

According to Caught Offside, Newcastle have made an approach for Boca Juniors winger Kevin Zenon, with other Premier League clubs also interested in snapping him up.

Tottenham and Aston Villa are also mentioned as potential options for the 23-year-old, with Brighton, Benfica, Lyon and Napoli all in the mix, too. He only has a £13m release clause, which appears to have alerted lots of clubs.

Zenon has been linked with a move to Newcastle in the relatively recent past and this new update further suggests that he is a genuine target for Howe and Mitchell.

The Argentine now has 11 goal contributions in 39 appearances for Boca, and while that may not be an earth-shattering tally, his end product should only improve as he gets older, especially if he is playing alongside superior footballers than his current teammates. Meanwhile, analyst Ben Mattinson has hailed him as a “magical” player.

Zenon is primarily a left winger, and it could be argued that a right-sided player to replace Miguel Almiron and Jacobn Murphy is more important, but he is a versatile player who can also shine at left-back and in midfield, so Newcastle shouldn’t pass up the chance to sign him.

Mitchell's Newcastle scouts love 21 y/o who's "incredibly good defensively"

He has made 10 league appearances for a huge club this season.

The fact that his release clause is such a low amount, certainly in terms of modern transfer fees, is another big reason to strike a deal for a very talented individual.

Only earlier this year, Justin Langer coached Australia to a four-Test home series defeat against a team that had a net bowler and a T20 specialist. Concerns around his coaching style have been the worst-kept secret in Australian cricket, which plummeted further with thrashings in the West Indies and Bangladesh as the year progressed. And yet, one of them could be a world champion on Sunday. Well, actually Monday in their home countries (the final begins at 1am on Australia’s east coast and at 3am in New Zealand). No matter how crushing a defeat, it is not the end of the world in today’s cricket where World Cups of one format or the other are played practically every year. Hasan Ali, Chris Jordan, we are looking at you. You dust yourselves up, start to play good cricket again and, with some luck, you get that chance again. Especially in T20 cricket, prone to upsets and chance because of the crunched nature of it.This is New Zealand’s third straight ICC event final, and Australia’s first since they won the World Cup in 2015, but they have made it here in identical fashion. Finishing second in their groups, they got the better of the tournament favourites in the semi-finals through a dash in the final four overs, helped significantly by the toss.Related

This has been the friendliest of all T20 World Cups to sides winning the toss: if the final is also won by the side winning the toss, two out of every three matches will have been won by the toss-winners.Restrict it to evenly matched teams and take out Sharjah, and only one total has been defended out of 14 in the Super 12s. They don’t come more evenly matched than these two. If Australia have the extra batting depth, New Zealand have a more rounded bowling attack, the most economical of the tournament. Usually batting depth trumps rounded attacks in T20 contests, but this has been the slowest-scoring T20 World Cup of all, which gives bowling-heavy teams a chance. Then again, the final will be played on a fresh pitch; if it is anything like the semi-final in Dubai, it gives Australia a slight advantage, but if 150-160 is a par score, New Zealand might just be the favourites.Form guideAustralia WWWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)

However as a batter at this World Cup, while others might have scored more runs, in terms of impact-batting Warner has been second only to another all-timer, Jos Buttler, scoring 236 runs at a strike rate of 148.42. Even though there wasn’t much dew during the semi-final in Dubai, chasing remains the preferred option.Stats and trivia New Zealand have never beaten Australia in any knockout match. They have played each in 17 quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals, out of which Australia have won 16. The one that New Zealand won wasn’t a knockout but the first of the best-of-five finals in 1981, a series that New Zealand eventually lost. Australia have won all the four knockout matches between them at ICC events. Neither captain is having a great tournament. Kane Williamson has scored 131 runs at under a run a ball, and Aaron Finch has scored at a rate of just 119 despite being an opener and getting to bat in the powerplay. Finch, though, has done much better at the toss, winning five to Williamson’s two. We are guaranteed a first T20 world champion from the southern hemisphere.Quotes”It’s not unexpected: we came here with a clear plan to try and win this tournament and always felt as though we had the depth and quality in our squad to put ourselves in a position to do that, and New Zealand have been in every final for a long time now in ICC events. They’re a great team over all three formats and can never be underestimated, but maybe people on the outside do.”
“I suppose the fact that we’re neighbours creates a bit of that [rivalry]. And [in] a number of different sports as well. We play each other on a number of occasions. It’s always a great competition and great occasion when we play each other.”

West Indies call up Jeremy Solozano for Test tour of Sri Lanka

West Indies have named uncapped opener Jeremy Solozano in a 15-man squad for their Test tour of Sri Lanka later this month. Allrounder Rahkeem Cornwall was also back in contention while veteran quick Shannon Gabriel was fit to return after a hamstring injury kept him out of the Pakistan series in August, but there was no place for opener Kieran Powell or fast bowler Alzarri Joseph.Solozano, a left-hander who played at the 2014 U19 World Cup and has represented West Indies A, made 74 off 216 balls in the second of two intra-squad “Best vs Best” matches in Antigua, with lead selector Roger Harper praising his “application, patience and composure”.Opener has been a problem position for West Indies in recent times. John Campbell was dropped after an extended spell as Kraigg Brathwaite’s partner at the top of the order, followed by a brief experiment with Shai Hope opening and then the latest international recall for Powell, who initially came in as a concussion replacement for Nkrumah Bonner against South Africa in June.”The Best v Best matches provided the opportunity for the players to spend some time in the middle honing their skills for this tour,” Harper said. “The aim was to simulate as much as possible, the conditions that the team will likely face in Sri Lanka, so it was good to see the batsmen spending time at the crease while putting some scores together and the bowlers looking to build pressure and create wicket-taking opportunities.

“Jeremy played for the West Indies A team in 2019 (against India A) with success and in the Best v Best matches he displayed a sense of application, patience, and composure, while looking very comfortable against both pace and spin which encouraged the panel to invest in him at this point.”The squad is well balanced, with good depth in all departments. The composition is very similar to the squad that brought us success in our last away tour to Bangladesh, with a few changes in personnel. There are a number of players who are familiar with Sri Lankan conditions and most of the others have good experience in the Indian sub-continent, so they know what to expect and are gearing themselves for it.”Veerasammy Permaul, who last played a Test in 2015, joins Cornwall and Jomel Warrican as the main spin options in the squad, with West Indies looking to repeat their success in Bangladesh earlier this year, where they won 2-0.The tourists will play a four-day warm-up match in Colombo before two World Test Championship fixtures against Sri Lanka at Galle.West Indies Test squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Jermaine Blackwood (vice-capt), Nkrumah Bonner, Roston Chase, Rahkeem Cornwall, Joshua Da Silva, Shannon Gabriel, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Kyle Mayers, Veerasammy Permaul, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Jeremy Solozano, Jomel Warrican
