Necaxa head coach Nicolás Larcamón expressed satisfaction with his team’s goalless draw against Tigres in the first leg of the Clausura 2025 quarterfinals. While the match ended without a winner, the Argentine manager praised his players’ performance at home and their ability to control large portions of the game, despite missing key chances.

The had several opportunities to take the lead but failed to convert, leaving them without an advantage heading into the second leg in Monterrey. While some might view the result as a missed opportunity, Larcamón chose to focus on the positives.

“We showed what we’re capable of," said the Argentinian said after the match. "The way the match played out is a great sign for us. It speaks volumes about what this team can do. We were dominant, superior in many aspects, and created a lot. The only downside is that we couldn’t turn that into a lead.

"But in some ways, this result suits us – it means we go to El Volcán with a clear mission to win, which aligns with our identity. We don’t want to just defend a narrow lead; we want to go out and pursue victory. I’m proud of how the team performed."

Larcamón also addressed the 18-day gap since Necaxa’s last match, stating that the lack of rhythm wasn’t a factor in the draw.

"The team responded well right from the first minute," he said. "I didn’t feel we were affected by the layoff at any point. We used the break to prepare properly, and I think that showed on the field."

Tigres and Necaxa head into the second leg with everything on the line after a tightly contested first match ended in a scoreless draw at Estadio Victoria. While Larcamón left his home ground encouraged by his team’s performance, he knows a win on the road is now the only path to the semifinals.

Playing at El Volcán, however, is no easy task. Tigres have built a formidable home record this season, winning eight of nine matches and losing just once – making them one of the strongest home sides in the league.

WHAT MAXI VELÁZQUEZ SAID

With head coach Guido Pizarro suspended, Tigres assistant Maxi Velázquez spoke to the media following their 0-0 draw against Necaxa in Aguascalientes. The first leg was marked by limited action and few clear chances, but Velázquez remained optimistic.

“It was a fair result. We always step on the field looking to win. It was an intense match. We struggled a bit in the first half, but improved a lot in the second," said Velázquez. "The draw was fair based on how both teams played. Now, we shift our focus to the return leg at home, with our fans behind us. It’s a positive result, and we’ll look to close out the series at El Volcán."

Velázquez acknowledged that lack of finishing has been a concern for Tigres, but said it’s something the coaching staff is working on.

"Of course, it’s something we’re trying to improve," he said. "It’s not a crisis, but it’s something we’re addressing. We’re looking at the positives and continuing to grow."

Left for £0: Arsenal must rue losing "unbelievable" PL star who loved Henry

After two seasons of coming painfully close, there was hope and expectation that this year would finally be Arsenal’s year.

Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case, as with over half of the campaign played, Mikel Arteta’s side are six points off Liverpool in the Premier League and out of both the League Cup and FA Cup.

Worse yet, with Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Jesus out injured, the team looks incredibly light in attack.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetalooksdejected

It’s just the situation which could have been alleviated by a former youth player who was let go for nothing but is now worth an enormous sum of money.

Former Arsenal youth players let go too soon

Before we get to the player in question, let’s look at a couple of other academy gems who were let go far too soon by Arsenal, starting with perhaps the most painful of the lot: Harry Kane.

The England captain was famously released by the Gunners when he was a child as they didn’t believe he had what was needed to make it in the game, which was a decision that came back to haunt the club in a big way.

After being picked up by Tottenham Hotspur a few years later, then spending a few years out on loan following his graduation from the youth academy, the Walthamstow-born poacher took his chance in the Lilywhites’ first team and never looked back.

In all, the 31-year-old scored 280 goals and provided 61 assists in 435 games for Spurs before securing a mega-money move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, where he’s already racked up an incredible tally of 72 goals, and 22 assists in 73 games and looks on track to lift his first league title this season.

On top of going on to become arguably the greatest striker in world football, he also had a nasty habit of scoring against the Gunners, and as things stand, has a record of 15 goals and two assists in just 21 appearances against the red side of North London.

Interestingly, one of Kane’s teammates in Baveria is another player who left the Gunners too soon: Serge Gnabry.

The German international joined the club’s youth set-up in 2011, but after an unsuccessful loan to West Bromwich Albion, he was sold to Werder Bremen in 2016, where he played well enough to attract Bayern’s attention, where he has since scored 90 goals and provided 56 assists in 262 appearances.

With all that said, the player in question, who’s now worth a fortune, is plying his trade much closer to N5.

The former Arsenal prospect worth millions today

So, it would be fair to say that of all the players that Arsenal have let go too soon over the years, Kane ranks as the most painful, but while he’s now tearing it up in Germany, there is another former academy gem continuing to perform in South London.

Market Movers

Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze has cemented himself as one of the most exciting and dangerous players in the Premier League over the last few years, someone who can play off the left, in attacking midfield or even as a left eight, but years before he made a name for himself at Selhurst Park, he was in the Gunners’ academy.

The England international, who revealed that Thierry Henry was his “number one” player growing up, joined the North Londoners as a child but was released at just 13 years old in 2011, after which he would spend time with Fulham, Reading and Millwall, where he was again released.

He finally found a permanent home with Queens Park Rangers in the Championship. Then, four years later, he finally earned a move to the Premier League when Palace agreed to pay the Hoops £20m, including add-ons, following his impressive 19/20 campaign in which he scored 14 goals and provided eight assists in 48 games.

Since moving to the Eagles, the “unbelievable” Premier League star, as dubbed by Oliver Glasner, has gone from strength to strength, racking up a tally of 32 goals and 23 assists in 149 appearances, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.70 games.

This rise has seen him earn nine senior caps for England, and his valuation soar, with Football Transfers valuing him at up to €67.5m, which is about £56m. For context, that’s a higher valuation than both Gabriel Martinelli’s (£49m) and Leandro Trossard’s (£25m) estimates via the same source.

Ultimately, it’s hard to blame Arsenal for releasing Eze when they did, as spotting talent at such a young age is notoriously difficult, but we can’t help but imagine just how brilliant he’d be in Arteta’s side.

Babar Azam on Saud Shakeel dismissal: 'We felt the ball had been grounded'

Ollie Pope’s diving catch down the leg-side to dismiss Pakistan batter Saud Shakeel cost Pakistan and shouldn’t have been given out, according to Pakistan captain Babar Azam. Speaking after Pakistan succumbed to a 26-run defeat in Multan that confirmed a series loss to England, Babar said it appeared as if the ball had touched the ground”The Shakeel dismissal cost us,” he said. “It looked to us as if the ball had touched the ground. As a professional, you have to respect the umpire’s decision, but we felt the ball had been grounded.”Related

  • Pakistan, and the curious case of collapsing on flat tracks

Shakeel’s dismissal came at a vital juncture in the match, with lunch approaching and Pakistan reasonably positioned to pull off their second-highest fourth-innings run-chase. Pakistan required another 64 runs to win when Shakeel – six runs away from a hundred – pulled at a short ball outside leg stump, getting a tickle on it. Pope dived to his right to snare it low off the ground, although the replays suggested significant uncertainty as to whether the catch was clean.Part of the frustration of Shakeel’s dismissal was down to the manner in which the decision was reached, with Aleem Dar sending a soft signal of “out” to third umpire Joel Wilson. Wilson ended up sticking with it to confirm the dismissal.Despite discussions among the ICC Full Members around the protocols surrounding the on-field soft-signal, there has been no change to the playing conditions itself (the IPL has scrapped the soft-signal). The regulations continue to state that in the event of “inconclusive replay evidence, the on-field decision communicated at the start of the consultation process shall stand”.The TV umpire does review the footage and has complete authority to make his/her decision independent of the soft signal. Increasingly the trend among match officials has been to offer clarity to any decision and one way they have agreed to do that is to avoid using language that reflects that – so words such as ‘conclusive’ or ‘inconclusive’ referring to evidence have been removed from the radio communication between the TV and on-field umpires and instead, the former simply conveys his own decision as either out or not out.The issue is likely to be on the agenda of the ICC’s cricket committee when it next meets in March.”I think it’s for the umpires to decide [if the soft signal should be done away with],” Babar said. “Like I said, we felt the ball was grounded.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The Pakistan dressing-room’s reaction was one of disbelief after Shakeel’s dismissal was upheld, revealing both surprise and a sense of the importance of the moment. Control of the match switched hands once and for all, with England taking the final three wickets with Pakistan still well away from the target.England captain Ben Stokes was more equivocal in his view. Immediately after the match, he said he felt there weren’t any doubts about the ball carrying, but also pointed out those sorts of decisions could end up going either way.”I don’t think [there were any doubts about the catch], personally,” he said. “The only thing where you start worrying is when it gets looked at for a long period of time because that’s when you start having doubt in your own head. I’ve been part of games before where I’ve been on the team who’s been on the receiving end of those decisions and you’re always like, ‘that’s not carried’.”You see a lot of lot of those decisions and those type of catches in cricket. You could say the similar thing was when Rooty got caught at short leg – you could say that might have touched the floor. But you’ve just got to go with what the umpire’s decision is. It went our way but I’ve been involved in a few decisions where stuff like that has gone against us. But you can’t change that.”The man at the centre of the controversy was certain the ball had reached him on the full but admitted that, after that, it was hard to be sure.”I knew it had carried,” Pope said. “I didn’t think it had bounced before. As a keeper when you’ve got the gloves on you honestly can’t tell. I didn’t think it had touched the ground after. When you have gloves on you feel it go in but that’s it.”

He only won 2/7 duels: Pep must now drop 6/10 Man City star after Spurs

Manchester City got back to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur. Going to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been something of a tricky assignment for Pep Guardiola’s team over the years, but a professional performance saw them over the line.

Results prior to Wednesday's fixture.

After two games out with injury, Erling Haaland was the man who scored the only goal of the game. It was a cute finish from the City number 9, who steered home a deflected cross from Jeremy Doku which was fired across goal. Haaland was involved in the build-up, too, linking up play before darting into the box.

It was not all plain sailing for City though, against a side that has been their bogey team in recent seasons. Lilywhites captain Son Heung-min was denied by Ederson, and Wilson Ododbert was inches away from tucking home a cross from Pedro Porro at the back post.

The Norweigan striker thought he had doubled his and City’s tally for the night in the second half. However, the goal was disallowed for a handball, and VAR did not overturn it. Nevertheless, the visitors held on to earn an important three points.

There were certainly some standout players for the Citizens on the night.

Man City’s best players vs. Spurs

One of the standout players in such an important win for the East Mancunians was Jeremy Doku. The Belgian winger, who was awarded the player of the match award, ran tirelessly at the Spurs defence all night, never giving them any respite.

Doku’s stats from the game, courtesy of Sofascore, were outstanding. The 22-year-old had 57 touches, completed an impressive five out of nine dribbles, and created two chances.

Off the ball, he worked hard, winning seven ground duels in what was a dominant display from the winger, which Haaland certainly profited off. It was, of course, Doku’s deflected cross which led to the goal.

Another player who impressed for City was young centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov. The Uzbekistan international had a rocky start to life at at the Etihad, but since the first five minutes of his debut against Chelsea, he has shown exactly why the Premier League champions signed him.

Goal journalist Sean Walsh gave the defender a 7/10 for his efforts, describing his performance as a ‘strong and stable showing’ against a dangerous attack that included Odobert from the start and Son off the bench.

As well as Doku and Khusanov played, there was one City star who struggled in North London.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Man City star who struggled vs. Spurs

On what was a good night for City, one player who arguably struggled was Matheus Nunes. Playing right back once again, it was, at times, a tough night at the office for the Portugal international, who was directly defending against Odobert.

Walsh gave the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star a 6/10 for his efforts, explaining that it seemed like Nunes ‘didn’t particularly enjoy his battles’ against the electric Odobert, who was operating down that left flank for Spurs.

However, it wasn’t all bad for Nunes. The midfielder-turned-right-back made a fantastic, goal-saving challenge on new Spurs attacker Mathys Tel in the second half, denying the Frenchman what seemed like it could be a certain goal.

With that being said, Nunes’ numbers from the game are somewhat underwhelming. Without the ball, his struggles were highlighted, winning just two out of seven ground duels and losing his only attempted tackle. He also lost the ball 11 times, although did create one chance.

City’s next assignment in the Premier League is a tough away trip to Nottingham Forest. Renowned for their tricky wingers like Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga, it could provide a tough assignment for Nunes.

There is no doubting his ability, but perhaps in a game where City will get hit on the counter and have wingers constantly driving at them, Guardiola will decide to rotate him out of the side, in favour of a more natural defender.

Of course, it remains to be seen which route they take when it comes to selection for a game ten days or so away. However, after Nunes struggled, perhaps it will be in Guardiola’s mind to select someone else at right back.
