Shastri backs Rahane's inclusion in WTC final squad: 'In a one-off, you need your most experienced players'

Ravi Shastri, the former India coach, is “glad” the selectors have valued Ajinkya Rahane’s experience in picking him for the WTC final against Australia at The Oval from June 7-11. He underlined Rahane’s desire to play first-class cricket and the runs he made there as one of the key differentiators.Rahane captained Mumbai during the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy, where they narrowly missed qualifying for the knockouts. He made 634 runs in 11 innings at an average of 57.64, including two centuries.A night prior to the BCCI announcing the Indian squad via a media release, Rahane impressed with a 29-ball 71 in a Player-of-the-match winning effort for Chennai Super Kings against Kolkata Knight Riders. Overall, Rahane’s powerplay game and his six-hitting in the season has come in for appreciation.”I’m so glad he’s made it to the side,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo on the . “He batted beautifully in these two-three games he’s played in the IPL, has looked in great touch. And let’s not forget the experience he has. The moment Shreyas Iyer was injured, you had to look in that direction.”Related

“People think he’s just played three IPL games and that’s why he’s in the side. They must have been on holiday for six months when he was playing first-class cricket. They must’ve been somewhere in the jungle where there’s no contact with anyone in the world. When you go six months into a holiday, you miss those 600 runs.”Rahane’s spot had been under scrutiny after runs dried up post his heroics on the Australia tour in 2020-21, where he led India to their second-straight Test series win amid several challenges posed by injuries and Covid protocols. His previous Test hundred had come on that second Test of that tour as a stand-in captain, on Boxing Day in Melbourne, to help India level the series after they had slumped to 36 all out in an embarrassing loss in Adelaide.Since being left out, Rahane battled a wrist injury that limited his IPL participation last year. Once he returned, he touched upon playing with freedom and without worrying about a comeback. Shastri compared Rahane’s comeback to Cheteshwar Pujara’s.Pujara too found himself out along with Rahane after the South Africa tour last year, but prolific returns in county cricket fueled his return. He made eight hundreds – including three doubles – for Sussex across formats, last year.”Absolutely, it’s a one-off big game, like the Super Bowl, and you need your experienced player,” Shastri said of Rahane’s inclusion. “Don’t forget just two-and-a-half years ago, the man won a Test series in Australia. He was the captain when Virat [Kohli] went [on paternity leave] and did a sterling job.”People forget that hundred at the MCG, the way he played, and the fact that he’s gone back to the grind. You saw what it did with Pujara, he went back to the grind playing domestic cricket, playing county cricket, just got the number of runs under his belt, then came back into Test cricket and performed. It’s the same thing with Rahane, let’s hope that experience comes handy.”Shastri didn’t mince words when asked if chatter around Rahane’s good form and his ball-striking may have been a factor in his eventual selection. “Oh, a lot, because the memory is fresh,” he responded. “Domestic cricket was over two months ago. People might tend to forget it, even the selectors. Suddenly you come in and play that kind of innings where you look at ease, the timing is good, the footwork is good, the confidence is good, it would’ve definitely helped.””People think Rahane just played three IPL games and that’s why he’s in the side. ‘Wasn’t invited to a single selection meeting’Shastri also opened up about his seven-year tenure with the Indian team across two stints between 2014-2021, first as team director and then as head coach. His last assignment was the T20 World Cup in 2021, before Rahul Dravid took over in November 2021.Shastri categorically stated not having sat in a single selection meeting in this period, while also elaborating on why a coach needed to be there even if it wasn’t in a voting capacity.”I have zero first-hand experience [of attending selection meetings],” he said. “Seven years I was part of the team, I never went near a selection meeting. I wasn’t invited either. I think in the long run, yes [a coach should be invited].”You spend a lot of time with the boys, it’s important, even if not in voting capacity, but to hear what the selectors are thinking, what is their train of thoughts are. And then to decide what could be the right thing for the side. I have zero idea how it starts, how it finishes, who are there in the meeting. From what I gather, there were a lot of people [in the meetings], over the last three-four years, inside selection meetings, not supposed to be there, against the constitution but pitched up.”However, Shastri did acknowledge that he had reservations attending such meetings for the possibility of players not opening up to him if they knew he had a say in selection.”I needed the trust of the player,” Shastri explained. “if a player knew I was a selector or I could influence a selector/chairman of the committee, then will he open up to me? Will he have the same trust in me? There could be a certain people who will come and still be open and upfront, there could be a certain people who might not want to, and I don’t blame them because they may have some reservations.”From my point of view, that’s why I thought it’s best to stay away, but in the long run, especially when a team is in the rebuilding stage, it’s extremely important that a coach who spends a lot of time with the players within the confines of the dressing room can give some valuable inputs.”

Emery makes trip to watch £12m+ Aston Villa target as NSWE eye fresh move

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery made the trip to Spain over the weekend to watch a South American star in action who he is keen to sign in the summer, according to a new report.

Marco Asensio lands Aston Villa award

Aston Villa and NSWE made some serious moves in the January transfer window, signing a number of new players including Marcus Rashford and Axel Disasi, who joined on loan from Manchester United and Chelsea respectively, as well as Donyell Malen, who signed permanently from Borussia Dortmund.

None, however, have been as impactful as Marco Asensio.

The Spaniard, who is spending the rest of the season on loan at Villa Park from Paris Saint-Germain, has scored seven goals in his first eight games for Emery’s side, including three against Club Brugge in the Champions League as Villa eased into the competition’s quarterfinals.

For his exploits, Asensio was recently named Villa’s Player of the Month for February, scooping a massive 60% of the fans’ votes.

Given his stellar performances, Villa supporters will no doubt be hoping the club can keep hold of the former Real Madrid man past his initial loan spell.

Fortunately, after Villa progressed past Brugge in the Champions League, Emery provided a glimpse of hope that in fact happen. Asked about Asensio, the Spanish coach said, according to AS: “It depends. Of course, we’re happy with it.”

Emery watches Foyth in action for Villarreal

With a plethora of attacking talent at his disposal, it seems Emery has now turned his attention to reinforcing his defence. According to a new report from Spain, per Sport Witness, Emery was back at his former club Villarreal over the weekend to watch them lose 2-1 to Real Madrid at El Madrigal, and not just for fun.

The publication reports that the 53-year-old was there to keep an eye on Villarreal defender Juan Foyth – a player he tried and failed to land in January.

The Argentine, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, scored his side’s goal on the night, and it’s thought Emery hasn’t given up on landing him in the summer because he feels he “fits perfectly” into his system.

Villarreal are thought to be willing to accept an offer of €15m (£12.6m) for Foyth – which is the same figure they played Spurs for him back in 2021.

World Cup winner Foyth, who has been described as “fantastic” by former Liverpool star Luis Garcia, recently hinted that he would be open to a move to Villa Park.

Speaking to AS, per Birmingham Live, about Villa’s interest in January, the 27-year-old said: “I learned a lot from Unai; I became more mature and a better footballer. I was surprised that they were interested in me almost without playing. I thought it was strange, since I’d been practically blank for a year.”

“That interest shows the confidence Unai has in me, and I’m flattered,” he added.

Leeds could make "statement signing" in £34m "beast", claims Paul Robinson

Leeds United could make a “statement signing” by bringing in a £34m striker this summer, according to former goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Leeds pursuing Premier League goalscorer

Joel Piroe has been in fine form in the Championship this season, having scored 15 goals, the joint-highest in the second tier, but Leeds are believed to be searching for a new striker, as promotion to the Premier League now beckons.

One target they have in mind is Southampton’s Cameron Archer, who is said to be keen on a move to Elland Road this summer, with the Saints almost certain to be relegated from the top flight.

The 49ers are also said to be looking at AC Milan striker Tammy Abraham, who is currently out on loan at AS Roma, with the former Chelsea man eyeing a return to the Premier League.

Leeds now likely to move for "excellent" £20m forward if they win promotion

The Whites are now in a very strong position to be promoted from the Championship.

A whole host of English clubs are queuing up for Abraham, who cost Roma £34m in August 2021, which means it could be difficult to get a deal done, but Robinson has recently indicated Leeds should go all out to sign the striker.

The former goalkeeper said: “Joel Piroe plays up there. He’s led the line. He’s got the goals this season. But actually, you look as an out-and-out recognised number nine, somebody like Tammy Abraham would be a great fit.

“He’s on loan at the moment, but his contract’s up at the end of the season. So if he’s going out on loan now with his contract up at the end of the season, you would think he’s got no future at his parent club. So a signing like that would be a statement signing for Leeds as well because he’s a quality player in an area of the field that Leeds need.”

Abraham could be a top signing for Leeds

It hasn’t been the best of seasons for the Roma forward out on loan at Milan, but he has still managed to score eight goals in all competitions, including two in the Champions League, and his top-level pedigree means he could be a success at Elland Road.

The 27-year-old, who has been lauded as a “beast”, has also impressed in the Premier League in the past, scoring a total of 26 goals in England’s top tier, including 15 in one season for Chelsea during the 2019-20 campaign.

AC Milan'sTammyAbraham

It may be difficult to win the race for the English forward, given the level of interest, but he is the type of signing Leeds need to make if they are promoted this season and want to avoid an instant return to the Championship.

Although Piroe has been very impressive this season, the Dutchman is unproven at Premier League level, and it’s not a guarantee he will hit the ground running, while Abraham has a proven track record of scoring goals in the top flight.

Supreme Court orders immediate release of Imran Khan

Former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister was arrested in Islamabad on Tuesday

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered the immediate release of Imran Khan, the former Pakistan cricketer and Prime Minister, from custody after declaring his arrest “unlawful” on Thursday. The Chief Justice of Pakistan’s Supreme Court, Umar Ata Bandial, ordered Imran’s immediate release after the warrants through which he was arrested in Islamabad on Tuesday were also declared null and void.Imran will now be transferred to a guesthouse at police headquarters in Islamabad, and he has been ordered to present himself to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday, which had declared his arrest legal.Related

Imran Khan arrested in Islamabad

It marks a swift turnaround two days after Imran was arrested by the Pakistan Rangers, a paramilitary federal law enforcement corps, after he presented himself at the IHC for an unrelated case. At the time, he was arrested in relation to the Al Qadir University case, an institution he founded as prime minister in 2019 and where he remains chairman. The manner of the arrest, which saw Imran led away by scores of paramilitary police, led to severe criticism in Pakistan and elsewhere. According to , Imran alleged in the Supreme Court that the arrest had been violent, and he had been beaten with sticks.Imran was being held by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and had been ordered by the IHC to be kept in physical remand for eight days. It was that decision that Imran appealed immediately, leading to the order of his release on Thursday. The decision does not represent an acquittal in this case – the release comes from the Supreme Court determining that the procedure of the arrest was improper.Moments after Imran’s release, his supporters gathered outside the court to celebrate and chant slogans. His arrest had led to violent and deadly protests all across Pakistan, most notably in Lahore, where the Corps Commander’s House was ransacked and set alight. Clashes between the Pakistan military and supporters of Imran’s party, the PTI, continued throughout the past two days.Mobile internet remains suspended throughout the country, and social-media sites have been blocked. Conservative estimates have the number of people killed at 12.The current federal government in Pakistan, which replaced Imran’s government in April 2022 after a vote of no confidence, has often called for his arrest, as have several courts over the past year. There were two separate concerted attempts to arrest him from his residence in March, where police were thwarted by huge numbers of supporters gathered outside his residence to help him resist arrest. Several polls have shown Imran holding a clear lead as the most popular politician in the country, and he has accused the government of thwarting Pakistani citizens’ democratic rights by refusing to hold elections.”They want to either arrest or disqualify me because they are scared [of the fact] that my party is one of the most popular in Pakistan’s history,” Imran Khan had told in March, as attempts to arrest him from his residence in Lahore were underway. Last November, Imran suffered bullet wounds to his leg after an assassination attempt while he was leading a protest march in Wazirabad in Punjab.

Celtic sold "incredible" gem for £2.5m, now he's similar to £100m PL star

Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers may be hoping for a quieter summer when the next transfer window rolls around, as he has had to deal with plenty of player turnover in his two years back at Parkhead already.

The Hoops sold Jota to Al-Ittihad and Carl Starfelt to Celta Vigo in his first summer back at the club in 2023, whilst Aaron Mooy also decided to retire, which meant that the manager lost several key players early on.

Jota, of course, returned to Glasgow in the recent January transfer window, joining on a permanent deal from Rennes, but Rodgers did not get to work with the Portuguese star for his first 18 months at the club.

The Northern Irish boss also lost Kyogo Furuhashi in that window earlier this year, as the Japan international made the move to Ligue 1 side Rennes ahead of the second half of the season.

Rodgers was also dealt a blow when the club sold Danish attacking midfielder Matt O’Riley to Brighton & Hove Albion last summer for a club-record fee of more than £25m.

That significant fee, of course, allowed Celtic to reinvest and it must be said that the Hoops have been excellent at extracting value out of their top talents over the years.

Celtic's record player sales

The Scottish Premiership giants smashed their club-record sale by moving the Denmark international on for more than £25m, beating the figures that were brought in for Jota and Kieran Tierney in the past.

As you can see in the table below, the Portuguese forward and the Scotland international were both sold for a fee of £25m, which means that the club have raked in £25m or more from three separate players in their history.

The Scottish side have also sold two strikers – in Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele – for more than £18m in recent years, which adds further evidence to suggest that Celtic are excellent at cashing in on their top talents, as much as the managers may not want to lose them.

Celtic know how to bring in talented young players and help them to thrive in their first-team, which puts them in the shop window for teams in Europe’s major leagues – who then swoop in to pay millions for them.

However, the Hoops do not always get it right, as no one is perfect, and there have been cases where a player has been sold on for a small fee, only for their value to skyrocket after their exit from Parkhead.

Where Are They Now

Scottish central midfielder Ryan Christie is one excellent example of this, as the left-footed star has thrived since his move away from Glasgow.

How much Celtic sold Ryan Christie for

The midfield dynamo was signed from Inverness in the summer of 2015 and spent his first two years away on loan, at Inverness for six months and Aberdeen for 18 months, to gain vital first-team experience.

Christie eventually became a first-team player for Celtic at the start of the 2018/19 campaign, under Rodgers, and produced an eye-catching 11 goals and nine assists in 38 appearances in all competitions.

The Scotland international followed that up with a staggering return of 21 goals and 16 assists in 45 outings in all competitions in the following season, as he provided a constant threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side.

Christie’s last season with the Scottish giants yielded seven goals and 15 assists in 46 matches for the Hoops in the 2020/21 campaign, before his move to Bournemouth in the summer of 2021.

Celtic failed to tie him down to a new contract, with his deal running out in 2022, and sold him to the Cherries for a reported fee of just £2.5m, which has turned out to be a bargain for the English club.

Ryan Christie is now similar to a £100m Premier League star

Almost four years later, Christie has made 147 appearances for Bournemouth, who are now in the Premier League, and is similar to Newcastle United superstar Bruno Guimaraes.

The experienced ace has started 25 times in the division this term and caught the eye with 3.0 tackles and interceptions per game, along with five ‘big chances’ created for his teammates.

Per FBref, Christie and Guimaraes have been statistically similar in the Premier League over the last 365 days – both playing in central midfield in the English top-flight.

As you can see in the chart above, both players like to create chances for their teammates, whilst they are also excellent when it comes to progressing play through passes, take-ons, and carries. This illustrates how well the Scottish ace has performed, particularly when you consider that Guimaraes had a £100m release clause in his Newcastle contract last summer.

Bruno Guimaraes

It shows that the former Celtic star has performed well at Premier League level for Andoni Iraola’s side this season, because his statistics have led to comparisons to the £100m-rated Brazil international, and – as shown in the chart – he ranks highly among his peers in a host of metrics.

Christie, who was described as an “incredible lad” by former boss Gary O’Neil, may not be worth £100m to Bournemouth, but his value has soared way beyond the £2.5m that Celtic brought in for his services back in 2021.

Valuations via Transfermarkt

As you can see in the table above, the 30-year-old maestro is now worth a whopping £10m, per Transfermarkt, and that is significantly more than the fee the Cherries paid for him almost four years ago.

Therefore, Celtic may regret only bringing in £2.5m for the mercurial playmaker when they opted to sell him in 2021, or they may rue that they were unable to agree a new contract to keep him at Parkhead ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, as he has gone on to become a fantastic player down south.

The Hoops will, therefore, hope to continue their trend of selling their key players for significant fees, rather than smaller sums like £2.5m, if they end up moving any of their stars on in the upcoming summer window.

'This is not justice!' – Atletico Madrid fans rage as IFAB announce major law change after Julian Alvarez 'double touch' penalty in Champions League defeat to Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid fans are raging over a football law change after Julian Alvarez's 'double touch' penalty against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Alvarez had 'double touch' during UCL shootoutGoal chalked off before Real advancedIFAB post change to penalty lawFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Alvarez saw his effort in a Champions League round of 16 shootout against rivals Real Madrid chalked off due to a 'double touch'. The referee, Szymon Marciniak, cited Law 14.1 of the game's regulations, ruling that the Argentine had made illegal contact with the ball using both feet and subsequently overturned the spot-kick after VAR intervention.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

However, IFAB has now clarified the rule and under the revised guidance, if a penalty taker unintentionally touches the ball with both feet — for example, due to a slip or misstep — and scores, the penalty must be retaken rather than ruled out. This change means that while deliberate infringements will still be punished, those stemming from accidental movement or slips will no longer carry the same severe consequences.

WHAT IFAB SAID

A circular from IFAB read: "(When) the penalty taker accidentally kicks the ball with both feet simultaneously or the ball touches their non-kicking foot or leg immediately after the kick: If the kick is successful, it is retaken. If the kick is unsuccessful, an indirect free kick is awarded (unless the referee plays advantage when it clearly benefits the defending team) or, in the case of penalties (penalty shoot-out), the kick is recorded as missed.”

It added: "This situation is rare, and as it is not directly covered in Law 14, referees have understandably tended to penalise the kicker for having touched the ball again before it has touched another player, thus awarding an indirect free kick to the opposition or, in the case of penalties (penalty shoot-out), recording the kick as missed.

"However, this part of Law 14 is primarily intended for situations where the penalty taker deliberately touches the ball a second time before it has touched another player (e.g. when it rebounds from the goalpost(s) or crossbar without touching the goalkeeper). This is very different from the penalty taker accidentally kicking the ball with both feet simultaneously or touching the ball with their non-kicking foot or leg immediately after they have taken the kick, which usually occurs because they have slipped when taking it. Not penalising an accidental double touch would nevertheless be unfair, as the goalkeeper can be disadvantaged by the altered trajectory of the ball.”

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

But for Atletico, the damage has already been done. The timing of IFAB's rule revision has left the fans furious as they believe their club was unfairly eliminated from the Champions League based on a rule that has now been softened in retrospect.

@Andrei95561884 wrote: "Brother, this implies that there WAS a double touch. This is not making us justice."

@lachlan_olofsen argued: "That’s great can’t wait for this to happen in a game for another 10 years. Wonder what ridiculous rule they’ll use against Atleti next year 😂."

Meanwhile, @anhdp018 lashed out: "That's how Vardid thieves take 15 UCL."

@Alejandr_1903 echoed his thoughts and wrote: "The surprise comes as Real Madrid steals again in a competition."

@roxrichie added: "The number of decisions that has gone Real Madrid’s way in the UCL is just diabolical. They would have at least 4 less UCL’s if refs was fair."

Primeiro tempo tenso e Palmeiras perde Danilo expulso

Man Utd can forget Mantato & Dorgu by unleashing "phenomenal" 18-year-old

Manchester United are boosted by the return of two players ahead of their Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Ineed, tThe Red Devils will see defensive pair Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro return to the squad for the trip to the high-flying East Midlands outfit.

However, left-back Luke Shaw, who has been out for several months, is still not ready to return, despite making progress with overcoming his injury. Youngster Ayden Heaven will also miss the trip to Forest due to injury and Kobbie Mainoo is also making progress but isn’t ready for a return to the squad.

Another player who won’t be available for the trip to the City Ground is young Bendito Mantato, due to his involvement in United’s FA Youth Cup tie.

Bendito Mantato's progress this season

17-year-old Mantato has been tipped for big things in a United shirt. According to a report from Academy Scoop, he ‘is set to sign his first professional contract’ at Old Trafford in the coming days.

The report goes on to state that the England U17 attacker is ‘held in high regard by the club’ before explaining that Ruben Amorim wants to give him a first-team debut before the season is out.

Well, that is certainly exciting for United fans. The wing-back has been a key player for the Red Devils in the U18s Premier League this term, scoring six times, all of which have come from the right wing, across ten appearances.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

However, there is evidence to suggest that the youngster could break into the first team as a wing-back. He has played as a left-back for England U17s, with Statman Dave suggesting that his “profile is perfect for Amorim’s wing-back role”.

Well, whatever the case, he won’t be involved for United against Forest after playing in the FA Youth Cup. However, there is another youngster whom Amoirm could unleash at wing-back.

Man United's Mantato alternative

Few things are as important in a footballer’s career than their first-team debut, especially when that comes on your 18th birthday.

That was the case for London-born Harry Amass, who made his first senior appearance in United’s last game before the international break away to Leicester City.

Against the Foxes, the youngster was impressive in his 21-minute cameo. One of the key features of his game was his “phenomenal” technical ability, something United fan and host of The Overlap: The Breakdown H described.

His stats from the game, courtesy of Sofascore, show just how well he performed in that demanding wing-back role. Amass had 30 touches of the ball, completed 91% of his passes, and won two from three attempted tackles.

This term, Amass has featured 21 times for United’s academy, a total of 1756 minutes. In that time, he’s grabbed four assists, mainly playing in a more orthodox left-back role rather than as a wing-back like he did for the first team.

The youngster can certainly play a big role for the Red Devils going forward, having already impressed at wing-back in a short space of time.

If given more minutes, he could grab that chance with both hands and become a serious challenger for United’s first choice on that side, Patrick Dorgu.
