Woakes feared he would never play again a year before Headingley rescue mission

Player of the Ashes series makes his time for England count after comeback from knee injury

Will James Anderson be involved in India next year?

That Chris Woakes was awarded player of the series for the 2023 Ashes was impressive given a sample size of three Test matches from a possible five. But such was the influence of the Brummie Botham, helping England win two of the final three Tests to draw 2-2 with Australia, the decision made perfect sense once you gave it a moment’s thought. As big a feat, however, might be that Woakes is even here at all. A year before parachuting in to save England at Headingley, the 34-year-old feared he would never play cricket again.Following a packed 2021-22 winter in which Woakes was the only bowler to play the T20 World Cup, the Ashes and tour of the Caribbean, he arrived back in the United Kingdom with the chronic issue in his right knee worse than ever before. The pain was so excruciating when he bowled that he wondered if a Test career of fits and starts, was finally coming to an end. One which climaxed with a dismal return of 11 dismissals at 52.36 across six appearances in unforgiving circumstances.Thankfully,we know Woakes’ story has a happy ending. The operation last summer, performed by knee and sports specialist Andy Williams, was such a success that Woakes was able to help England secure the 2022 T20 World Cup within months. Now, he has the Compton-Miller medal to add to a collection that includes the 2019 50-over World Cup. His bowling average is now under 30 (29.13), he picked up a first five-wicket haul against Australia in the fourth Test and his stock has never been higher with English supporters.Related

McCullum: Crawley's success against Australia validates England's approach to Test cricket

Did the teams catch up after the Oval Test? Yes, at a nightclub, Stokes clarifies

Switch Hit: They think it's all Oval…

“The way my knee felt, I wasn’t sure if I was going to play cricket again,” Woakes admitted. “If I could be at the end of that tour again (Caribbean), at no point did I think I’ll be stood here now with what I’ve achieved. So yeah, it’s pretty incredible to think about.”You don’t always get what you want and what you’re kind of destined for. But I turned down the opportunity to go to the IPL (2023) for a number of reasons, one being the opportunity to potentially be a part of this series.”At no point did I think I’d be stood here. That’s not how far your mind works. You don’t think ‘I can’t wait to be player of the series in the Ashes’. You just want to be a part of it, contribute and hopefully win. So to think that I’m stood here now actually… I think I need to let it sink in.”The last four of the 19 dismissals at 18.15 came on the final day of the series, split between two spells; the first accounting for both set openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner, the second taking out Steve Smith, who had got Australia to within 110 of their target of 384. A collapse followed, capped off by a brace for the departing Stuart Broad.Woakes was initially a doubt for this Test and revealed a “tiny” quad tear which he felt during his 10th over in the first innings. He powered through to bowl 25 – taking 3 for 61 – before another 19 in the second. His durability throughout has covered for his fellow quicks who waned as the series drew to a conclusion.Chris Woakes celebrates a wicket•AFP/Getty Images

There were runs, too, notably the 32 in the Headingley chase which got the comeback up and running. Every time England needed to someone to stand up in the back end of this Ashes, Woakes was more often than not that man. Unsurprisingly, he rates this as high as any of his other achievements, particularly given how the team rallied from 2-0 down.”The last three weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind – just amazing to be a part of. Just turning up at Headingley knowing that I was going to play and I think the belief in the dressing room at that point was still that we could win 3-2, which is amazing.”I think, in the past, we may have thrown the towel in but it was never the case. You know, the captain and the coach aren’t interested in draws so we knew that they were going to be results games. And coming off the back of Headingley, we felt that we could go on and win. Were it not for the weather, maybe we would be standing here 3-2.”Broad’s retirement, and question marks over James Anderson, who turned 41 on Sunday and returned just five wickets at 85.40, puts Woakes in a unique position in the latter stages of his career. Since debuting at the Oval against Australia in 2013, he has never played more than nine Tests in a row, partly because of their longevity.”When he’s not playing anymore it will all be ‘if he wasn’t in the era of Jimmy and Broad, he would have been more consistent in the England team’,” stated Ben Stokes after the match. Typically, Woakes rallies against the assertion they were ever obstacles in his career.”I’m pretty sure I’ve answered this a few times, but I feel very lucky to have played with Stuart as well. Jimmy’s the same. The stuff that I’ve learned from them has had a huge impact on how I’ve bowled about over the years. It’s extended my international career if anything.”So we obviously won’t know what would have been if they hadn’t been around. But I can only have good things to say in terms of the knowledge that they’ve passed on and the games that I have been a part of with them. It’s been an honour really.”James Anderson and Woakes chat during a net session•Getty Images

Nevertheless, there is a job up for grabs for an experienced head to oversee a transition for the bowling attack. And Woakes wants it, even among all his lucrative options on the franchise circuit.”Yeah, definitely. I want to play for England for as long as possible. Still, for me, playing international cricket is the pinnacle. You want to be a part of days like today. You don’t get it any anywhere else. So, you want this to last for as long as possible whilst you’re still performing, obviously. I think it’s important that the older guys in the team do pass on the knowledge to younger guys coming through.”I think there’s a big thing to be said for that. Because the international game is very different to what we play at county level. So much information can be passed on and hopefully, I can be part of that.”Even last summer when Woakes was out of action, Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had touched base with the Warwickshire allrounder because they knew he would fit their approach. That has played out to a tee, and now, as with many others in the set-up, you wonder how things would have been for Woakes if this management style was around five years ago.Woakes approached that philosophical question with a philosophical answer: “Would I be here today without what’s been? I don’t know.” He’s got a point.Even at the end of an Ashes series that thrilled but could have been better, there are no regrets. Least of all from Woakes.”I’m just proud of myself. It’s quite fitting to be where I was where I made my debut 10 years ago. I think I’ve played 47 (more) games in that time which, in 10 years, is not that many as an international cricketer. A lot would have played a lot more.”But, stood here now, I would have snatched your hand off for anything that I’ve achieved.”

Chelsea can axe Badiashile by unleashing "exciting" 19-year-old sensation

Chelsea are currently in the race to secure a top five finish in the Premier League in order to secure Champions League football for the 2025/26 campaign.

The Blues, who are currently competing in the Conference League, are fourth in the division heading into the last international break of the season, but they are only two points ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion in seventh and four points ahead of Aston Villa in ninth.

This means that Enzo Maresca’s men still have plenty of work left to do in the final nine games of the campaign to ensure that they remain in the top five of the league.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca celebrates withJadonSanchoafter the match

The London giants were beaten 1-0 by city rivals Arsenal at The Emirates in their last game before the break, thanks to a Mikel Merino header, and they will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge next time out.

As well as focusing on the final games of the season, Chelsea will also have one eye on the summer transfer window and the business that they want to do to improve the squad.

As you can see in the report above from Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have already secured two signings from Portuguese side Sporting, but there could also be players on their way out of Stamford Bridge.

Previous interest in Benoit Badiashile

Ahead of the January transfer window, Football Insider reported that there was some interest in Chelsea central defender Benoit Badiashile.

The report claimed that European giants Juventus and Marseille were keen on a swoop for the French centre-back ahead of the second half of the season, which came off the back of Italian side Milan reportedly showing a strong interest in his services last summer.

Football Insider revealed, however, that the Blues were prepared to block any efforts from other clubs to disrupt their squad, as they wanted to maintain consistency throughout the campaign.

The outlet did not state whether or not their stance on the ex-Monaco man, whose contract runs till the summer of 2030, will change in the summer transfer window later this year.

In The Pipeline

All of this interest from elsewhere suggests that Chelsea could move the French flop on if they decided to cash in on his services, which is exactly what they should now look to do.

Why Chelsea should sell Benoit Badiashile

The Blues signed Badiashile from Monaco for a reported fee of £35m at the start of 2023, just over two years ago, and he is yet to establish himself as a key player for the club.

He has only started 28 Premier League matches in those two years, with ten coming in his first five months at Stamford Bridge, and only three of those starts have been under Maresca.

The 23-year-old dud recently missed 12 league games with a hamstring injury, but he had been an unused substitute or failed to make the matchday squad in 11 of the first 15 top-flight outings this season.

As you can see in the table above, Badiashile has made six errors that have led to shots, goals, or penalties for the opposition in just 28 starts in the Premier League for Chelsea in his career, helping to keep just seven clean sheets in that time.

Overall, the former Monaco star has not been a successful signing for the Blues as he has rarely been used and is error-prone when on the pitch, which is why Maresca must move on from him this summer.

Chelsea do not have to dip into the transfer market to sign a replacement for Badiashile, however, as Maresca already has Aaron Anselmino who should be unleashed in his place.

Why Chelsea should unleash Aaron Anselmino

The 19-year-old defender signed for the Blues from Boca Juniors last summer and remained on loan with his club until January of this year, when he officially linked up with his new teammates at Cobham.

He is yet to make his first-team debut for Chelsea but was on the bench for the defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup and the Premier League last month, which shows that the centre-back is on the periphery of the senior squad.

Anselmino, who was described as an “exciting” talent by analyst Ben Mattinson, has played in the middle of a back three and on the right and left side of a centre-back pairing in his career, which suggests that he could comfortably play on either side of the defence.

The teenage titan’s statistics for Boca Juniors during the 2024 campaign also suggest that the potential is there for him to be more reliable than Badiashile has been for Maresca.

As you can see in the table above, Anselmino played 12 times in the Argentine top-flight last year and did not make a single error that led to a shot or a goal, whilst almost making four tackles and interceptions per match.

The young colossus, who started at centre-back in a 3-0 win for the U21s against Liverpool on Sunday, should now be given an opportunity to show what he can do at first-team level for Chelsea.

Badiashile has not proven himself to be a reliable performer for the Blues over the past two years and Maresca now has the opportunity to finally bin the French flop by unleashing Anselmino, who does not make errors on a regular basis, as his replacement in the squad.

At the age of 19, the Argentine youngster would also be a player who could grow and develop as a result of this exposure to the Premier League and first-team football in England, which is another reason why bringing him into the fold could make sense for Chelsea.

Chelsea have already signed a bigger talent than Essugo in £18m "machine"

Following the new of Chelsea’s move for Sporting CP midfielder Dário Essugo, do the Blues already have a better option on their books out on loan?

Mar 18, 2025

This would then free up the space for the club to capitalise on the interest from the likes of Marseille and Juventus, who could return to sign the left-footed giant ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Lees picks up where former team-mate Lyth leaves off as Durham launch pursuit in earnest

Pair won two Championship titles together for Yorkshire in 2014-15 before Lees joined Durham

ECB Reporters Network26-Jul-2023Former Yorkshire opening partners Adam Lyth and Alex Lees shone for their respective counties on day two of this LV= Insurance County Championship fixture at Scarborough as Durham responded in kind to the home side’s commanding first-innings 340 all out.Lyth made his way from 75 not out overnight to 111 off 188 balls before fellow left-hander Lees dominated after tea with 65 not out in Durham’s reply of 106 for 1 from 33 overs. The pair won two Championship titles together for Yorkshire in 2014 and 2015 before Lees fell out of form and left his home county for Durham to reignite his career in 2018.He has since played Test cricket for England and is currently on a run of four hundreds in his last five Championship innings. He was the cornerstone of Yorkshire’s 340 and was supported in thrilling fashion by Jordan Thompson’s 54 off 52 balls, including four fours and as many sixes. As Yorkshire advanced from 142 for 2 overnight, new-ball pair Matthew Potts and Ben Raine finished with 4 for 111 and 4 for 93 respectively. Raine claimed three of his wickets on day two.Lyth just loves batting at North Marine Road. Having grown up in Whitby, he learnt his craft on this ground, playing for the juniors and the seniors. He last played league cricket for them 10 years ago this coming September. Such is his fondness for Scarborough that he once went to Perth in Western Australia to play a winter of grade cricket for a coastal club of the same name.Lyth drove particularly well, especially on day one, and brought up his century off 157 balls.Durham clearly had more success with the ball during day two, claiming eight wickets. But they will have been frustrated at dropping a couple of slip catches, and Yorkshire will have been delighted with their work having been inserted.Just when it looked like Durham had created an opening, the lower order frustrated them.Raine trapped Ryan Rickelton lbw as Yorkshire reached an early lunch on 211 for 3, with rain preventing play between 12.35pm and 2pm. He then had Lyth caught behind cutting before wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson also helped Potts remove Matthew Revis, but at the second attempt after steepling bounce. And when Jonny Tattersall dragged a pull at Bas de Leede onto his stumps, Yorkshire were 236 for 6 in the 69th over having lost three wickets for 24.But a trio of handy contributions, led by Thompson, helped Yorkshire reassert their authority as another 104 runs were added.Ben Coad made 19 and Matthew Fisher 24, ably supporting Thompson’s freewheeling innings. He crashed four leg-side sixes off de Leede and Raine, one of them going out of the ground into the gardens surrounding this venue.Thompson was the last wicket to fall, caught at long-leg on the stroke of tea pulling against Potts. In truth, neither bowling performance has been anything to write home about, and we could now be set for the first Championship draw played at Scarborough since June 2013.Lees is doing everything he can to add to the 10 Test Matches he played last year. He hit all of his first seven boundaries down the ground or through cover off front and back foot, added to a lofted straight six off Coad’s seamers.Having lost opening partner Michael Jones caught behind off Thompson, leaving the score at 42 for 1 in the 10th over, he went on to reach his latest fifty off 64 balls. He shared an unbroken 64 for the second-wicket with captain Scott Borthwick, who will begin day three unbeaten on 29.

Drama in Mirpur as decider ends in thrilling tie

Bangladesh and India shared the ODI trophy after the deciding third match of the series ended in a dramatic tie in Mirpur. With India needing one run off the last four balls, Marufa Akter got No. 11 Meghna Singh caught behind, leaving Jemimah Rodrigues, who had held the second half of the chase together with 33 off 45 balls, stranded. The match was set up by Fargana Hoque’s 107, the first century by a Bangladesh batter in Women’s ODIs, which helped the hosts post their second-highest total in the format.India were inching steadily towards their 226-run target and were 191 for 4 in the 42nd over of the chase. Then came the moment that changed the course of the game. Harleen Deol was set on 77 – her best score in ODIs – when she tapped Nahida Akter in front of point and set off for a non-existent run. Fahima Khatun quickly got there from backward point to flick a throw to Nigar Sultana, who flung herself to take the stumps down and catch Deol, who was sent back, short. From that point on, India lost six wickets for 34 to be bowled out for 225 and share the three-match series 1-1. A Super Over, the norm in tied ODIs, was not contested since the extra time available for the tie-breaker had already elapsed by the time the 99.3 overs of the match had ended. The athletic effort from Nigar in running Deol out was a redemption of sorts for the Bangladesh wicketkeeper, who had grassed Smriti Mandhana early in the chase. The impressive fast bowler Marufa had done everything right on her first ball – angled a length ball away from Mandhana at high pace from over the wicket. The India vice-captain went for a slash without any foot work and edged, but Nigar, diving to her left, couldn’t hang on to the chance.Smriti Mandhana celebrates her fifty•BCB

Mandhana made Bangladesh pay with a 85-ball 59 and was involved in a 107-run partnership with Deol for the third wicket.Bangladesh drew first blood when Marufa took a stunning catch on the second attempt to dismiss Shafali Verma, who was brought in for Priya Punia. The quick intercepted an uppish drive by stretching out her right hand but, seeing the ball pop out, dived full-length to her right to pouch the rebound. Soon Sultana Khatun trapped Yastika Bhatia lbw to reduce India to 32 for 2 in the fifth overDeol came in at No. 4 ahead of Harmanpreet Kaur, and she made full use of the opportunity. She capitalised on the width provided by Marufa to thrash one through point before getting a front-foot stride out to drive one languidly through the covers. Mandhana tore into offspinner Sultana Khatun, hitting her for two fours in an over. India raced to 59 for 2 in the first powerplay.Mandhana brought up a half-century off 74 balls, and Deol soon followed her to the milestone, bringing hers up in 72 balls. Then Fahima gave Bangladesh an opening, finding extra bounce to get Mandhana slashing uppishly to backward point.Harmanpreet made 14 before falling in dramatic fashion, greeting the decision to give her out by hitting her stumps with her bat and remonstrating with the umpire while walking off. At the time she was given out, it was unclear if the umpire had ruled her out lbw or caught at slip – it was later clarified that it was the latter.Four balls after Deol was run-out, Deepti Sharma was caught short of her crease with a direct hit before Rabeya Khan trapped Amanjot Kaur lbw. Nahida then struck twice in three balls to brighten Bangladesh’s hopes further even as Rodrigues held one end up. Marufa, who went off the field briefly, clutching her ankle, after a 30-minute rain delay, then clinched the last wicket to set off cheers at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.Shamima Sultana and Fargana Hoque added 93 for the opening wicket•BCB

Earlier in the day, Fargana, who is the only Bangladesh batter with over 1000 runs in ODIs, channelled her experience to propel the hosts to their second-highest score in the format after they opted to bat first. She was aided by Shamima Sultana, who struck her second ODI fifty after being brought in for the misfiring Sharmin Akhter.A couple of fours off Amanjot in the fifth over got Shamima going. She first made room to cut a shortish ball between backward point and gully before pulling one in front of square a couple of balls later. Those were the only two boundaries Bangladesh managed in their first ten overs. The introduction of spin kept the duo quiet, before Shamima hit fours in the 15th and 17th overs, sweeping offspinner Sneh Rana through square leg to bring up the half-century opening stand and belting a full-toss from Rodrigues back over her head. Shamima and Fargana added 93, the second-best opening stand in women’s ODIs for Bangladesh – before Rana had Shamima miscue to mid-off on 52.For a large part of her knock, Fargana’s strike rate hovered in the thirties. She contributed only 31 off 80 balls in the opening stand. But the entry of Nigar at No. 3 was a gear-changing moment for Fargana. Both batters used the sweep to great effect in negating the Indian spinners. They added 71 off 85 for the second wicket, with Fargana contributing 42 and passing her fifty in the process. Even Nigar’s fall with Bangladesh on 164 in the 41st over did not deter her.Despite suffering from cramps and a sore forearm through the innings, Fargana kept going, even though she had a lot of running to get through, hitting only seven fours including the cover-drive off Shafali that took her to her hundred.

Farke can repeat Hernandez trick by axing Aaronson for "special" Leeds star

Spanish star Pablo Hernandez remains a fan-favourite at Leeds United and understandably so given the impact he had during his time as a player at Elland Road.

He originally joined the Whites on loan for the first half of the 2016/17 season from Swansea City before subsequently joining permanently that January – a move that would set the club up for success.

The now-retired Hernandez would make over 150 appearances for the Whites, cementing his place as a regular at the heart of the side – registering over 10 combined goals and assists every year he spent in Yorkshire, including the promotion-winning season in 2019/20.

The former Valencia ace would depart in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer, ending his four-year spell with the Whites, with very few players able to replicate his success in recent years.

One player, in particular, has struggled, with current boss Daniel Farke needing to take desperate action when the transfer window opens in a couple of months time.

Brenden Aaronson’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25

After joining for £25m in the summer of 2022, huge expectations were put on the shoulders of Brenden Aaronson to be a star for Leeds, but ultimately, nearly three years on he’s failed to live up to the hype.

The American international featured 42 times during the club’s most recent Premier League campaign, before leaving on loan to join Union Berlin for the 2023/24 season.

However, he’s since returned to the Whites, looking to play a crucial role in Farke’s ambitions of securing Championship promotion come the end of May.

Whilst he’s notched eight goals and two assists, only one of which has come since the start of January, often being anonymous in key matches and failing to deliver the goods.

Given his recent decline in form, it’s unclear whether the 24-year-old has the tools to succeed in the Premier League, with Farke needing to axe him from his side and repeat a deal for Hernandez this summer.

How Farke can repeat Hernandez success with Leeds this summer

Leeds boss Farke has done a superb job in managing the first-team since his appointment in the summer of 2023, helping the club sit in top spot with just eight games to go.

The German has achieved a 57% win record since taking the reins, doing an excellent job in picking the club up after dropping into the second tier ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

He’s made shrewd additions during his time in charge, including that of midfielder Joe Rothwell, who arrived on loan from top-flight outfit Bournemouth last summer.

The 30-year-old had to bide his time before making an impact in Yorkshire, often having to settle for minutes off the bench to make an impression.

However, in recent months, the former Blackburn Rovers star has cemented his place at the heart of the side, partnering Ao Tanaka at the base of the midfield.

Arguably, Rothwell, who’s previously been dubbed “special” by Tony Dorigo, produced his best showing against Sunderland, producing two assists and helping the side turn around a one-goal deficit.

On the face of it, a Hernandez repeat may appear to be a bit of a stretch, but the Englishman has followed in the Spaniard’s footsteps by originally moving on loan to Elland Road and impressing in the process.

If the club are to repeat a deal for the fan-favourite, they must look to pursue a deal on a permanent basis, offering a quality squad option, whether that be in the top flight or the second tier.

His current deal at the Vitality expires in the summer of 2026, potentially allowing the Whites to secure a cut-price transfer with the star entering his final year of his contract.

Rothwell has showcased his talents with the added minutes provided by Farke, with the German desperately needing to get a deal done to allow the midfielder to continue on his upward trajectory.

Georgia Adams went past 400 runs and 15 wickets in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy as Southern Vipers continued their march for a knockout spot with victory over Thunder.Adams scored a classy 71, during a pivotal 114-run stand with Emily Windsor – who scored a boisterous 59 to help shore up Vipers before another collapse saw them post 237. Linsey Smith ripped out the Thunder top order as they slipped to 33 for 5, with Adams getting two wickets, before eventually losing by 64 runs – despite Fi Morris’ 52.Vipers moved up to second in the table, having played a game more than those around them, while Thunder’s hopes of progression took a massive hit with two games to go.Ella McCaughan and Abi Norgrove set a platform after Vipers had won the toss and chosen to bat first. But after reaching 45, Vipers lost three wickets in eight overs as Hannah Jones’ introduction swung the momentum towards the visitors. The left-arm spinner struck with her first delivery to bowl McCaughan for a spritely 29 off 33 balls before the more sluggish Norgrove was lbw for 16 off 44. Jones also got her fingertips to an Adams straight drive to run out Georgia Elwiss while backing up.But Adams and Windsor righted the ship with a counter attack to lay the foundations for a score which had the potential to get close to 300, especially after Jones quickly completed her 10 overs.Adams was particularly strong running between the wickets in the Arundel heat, while Windsor showed uncharacteristic power – having worked on her hitting at Welsh Fire during the Hundred.Adams brought up her fifth half-century of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 53 balls, while Windsor followed with her second of the competition in 63 deliveries. The duo put on 114 to boost Vipers to 193 for 4 with 14 overs to go, but after Adams clipped Ireland international Laura Delany to midwicket they collapsed.Windsor skipped past Morris in the following over before Smith, Alice Monaghan, Rhianna Southby and Ava Lee all fell as the hosts lost seven wickets for 44 runs in 60 balls – Morris and Olivia Bell both taking three wickets. Vipers ending up on 237 in 47.5 overs.Thunder’s slump was even more severe as their top order disintegrated. Smith was the main instigator as she had Liberty Heap lbw in the second over, Naomi Dattani caught at backward point and Ellie Threlkeld sweeping to backward point. The spinner’s first six-over spell result in in 3 for 17.Mary Taylor picked up Southern Brave team-mate Seren Smale with an in-ducker while Delany was bowled by Adams.Morris and Daisy Mullan dug their side out of the hole, while still staying in touch with the required run rate in a 57-run stand. Morris struck a run-a-ball 50 but both fell in quick succession as Morris was bowled by talented young offspinner Lee and Mullan was caught and bowled by Adams.Phoebe Graham and Tara Norris slowed up Vipers’ hunt for victory, they saw off Smith – who ended with 3 for 29 – but Graham was cleaned up by Taylor.Taylor’s slower ball accounted for Norris, who picked out long-on, and Bell lobbed to midwicket to give Taylor best figures of 4 for 39.
