Danny Rohl has already had six competitive matches in charge of Glasgow Rangers to assess his squad, after being thrown in at the deep end when he arrived last month.

Every game will have been a learning experience for the former Sheffield Wednesday boss, and this international break has provided him with a chance to take a step back and analyse his start to life at Ibrox.

A 3-0 win over Dundee at Dens Park before the break made it three wins from three in the Scottish Premiership for Rohl, but there is still plenty of work to be done after back-to-back losses in the Europa League.

The former Southampton and Bayern Munich assistant will be able to use this international break to assess the players who are not with their national teams in training.

Meanwhile, Rohl has also had the chance to watch some of his stars in action in different environments, playing for their countries, which may give him a different perspective on them.

One player who may have harmed his club chances through his performance for his country is central defender John Souttar, who struggled against Greece on Saturday.

Rohl should ruthlessly ditch the Scotland international from the starting line-up off the back of a dismal showing at the weekend, as he was criticised for his role in Anastasios Bakasetas’ opening goal.

Souttar’s struggles for Scotland may not come as a surprise to those who have kept tabs on his performances for Rangers in the 2025/26 campaign, as his form has dipped since last season.

The former Hearts star won 74% of his ground duels and was only dribbled past twice in 24 appearances in the Premiership last term, per Sofascore, but he has not been as dominant and hard to play against in the current campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Souttar has already been dribbled past six times in 11 league games, three times as much as last season in less than half as many matches.

The Scottish defender has also won a much lower percentage of his duels on the ground, which suggests that he is a yard slower to get to the ball, and his struggles in that department were on display against Greece, losing 100% of his ground duels.

Souttar’s declining form for club and country is a cause for concern and should be something that Rohl has paid attention to during the international break, particularly with the options that he has at his disposal at Ibrox.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss does have alternatives that he can turn to ahead of the Scotland international, and he should ruthlessly ditch the 29-year-old flop to unleash the rarely-seen Emmanuel Fernandez.

Rangers signed the English centre-back from Peterborough in the summer in a deal that was described as a “blockbuster” move by Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony, but he has not had too many chances to impress.

The 23-year-old star has only played 181 minutes of football across three appearances and two starts in all competitions for the Scottish giants so far this season, per Transfermarkt, with one star in the Premiership and one start in the League Cup.

In his first start for the club against Alloa Athletic in the League Cup, Fernandez played a role in a 4-2 win for Russell Martin’s Light Blues and scored his first goal for Rangers.

The towering defender, who was hailed as a “colossus” by the aforementioned MacAnthony, was rewarded for that performance in the cup in August with a start against St Mirren in the Premiership the following weekend.

Fernandez, ironically, started alongside Souttar on that trip to play the Saints in what turned out to be a 1-1 draw under Martin, and he outperformed his experienced teammate that afternoon.

As you can see in the table above, the former Peterborough star made far more contributions to the team defensively and was not as much of a liability in duels, whilst he was not dribbled past a single time.

It was also Souttar who was caught out by the run that Jordan Ayunga made through the middle to score the opening goal in the game, as the Scotland international failed to track the run or catch up with the striker to prevent him from scoring.

However, since that fairly impressive outing against St Mirren in the Premiership, Fernandez has only played one minute of football in all competitions for Rangers, and that was off the bench in the recent 1-0 win over Hibernian.

The 23-year-old was not provided with many opportunities to shine under the previous management team, but impressed when he did, and Rohl should change that by finally unleashing him after the international break.

Given Souttar’s declining form for Rangers and Scotland, the timing could be right for the Light Blues to look to the future by offering Fernandez a run of matches to see if he can nail down a place in the side and be a more dominant presence at the back than the Scottish dud has been this season.

West Ham are braced for an all-important January transfer window that may well define Nuno Espírito Santo’s first season in charge, with David Sullivan, Karren Brady and the Hammers board poised to back their new manager.

Following back-to-back Premier League wins and the first time they’ve won two straight home games since 2024, things are finally starting to click into gear for Nuno.

The Portuguese tinkered heavily with his first West Ham starting line-ups before finally discovering a winning formula against both Newcastle and Burnley, with Nuno naming an unchanged side for both matches as the east Londoners secured vital victories.

However, West Ham reportedly have no intention of resting on their laurels, and credible reports suggest that Nuno has been told they have a transfer budget to spend in the winter (Sky Sports).

Niclas Füllkrug’s damning injury record and lacklustre spell at the London Stadium is paving the way for him to leave in January, and it is believed that West Ham are actively targeting a striker to potentially replace the German.

While Callum Wilson has done well in West Ham’s last two games, even getting on the scoresheet against Burnley, Nuno won’t be too comfortable relying on the 33-year-old given his own torrid fitness record.

West Ham also want a new defender, and potentially a midfielder if they can manage it (Sky Sports), but it is worth noting that they won’t have a bottomless pit of cash for January either, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The potential sales of Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse could be crucial when it comes to raising funds, with all three players linked to the West Ham exit door and seemingly not part of Nuno’s long-term plans.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, in an interview with Hammers News, they could also make the surprise decision to sell another squad member who’s only just arrived.

West Ham now ready to sell summer signing Mads Hermansen

Goalkeeper Mads Hermansen swapped Leicester for the London Stadium in a £20 million deal last summer, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal in August, but the Dane has since lost his place in the starting eleven to Alphonse Areola.

He started West Ham’s first four games of the season, conceding 11 league goals in total, with Areola seizing the number one spot back and West Ham now pondering a shock January call.

According to Bailey, West Ham are ready to cash in on Hermansen if the opportunity arises, but could also send him out on loan to get minutes elsewhere before returning.

If the 25-year-old were to leave permanently already, it would mark one of the shortest stints of any new West Ham player in recent memory, but would it be the right move?

Hermansen’s had just four games to showcase his worth in a turbulent side who seem likely to be battling relegation, and the shot-stopper is still very young in goalkeeping years. His prime is still to come, and goalkeeping coaches like Casper Ankergren have revered the former Leicester star as a serious talent between the sticks.

The New York Mets and New York Yankees are set to square off in a spring training exhibition on Monday, marking the first time Juan Soto will face his former team since making the big-money move to Queens during the offseason.

Ahead of the game, Aaron Boone was asked if he'd spoken to Soto, and the Yankees manager revealed his message to his former outfielder.

Matt Strahm was scheduled to appear Monday in the Philadelphia Phillies' spring training game against the Tampa Bay Rays but was unable to give it a go due to fingernail irritation on his throwing hand. The good news is that it's not considered anything serious. The bad news is that this is becoming a pattern for the reliever, who seems to run into problems whenever he needs to do any packing.

This is the second time Strahm has hurt himself boxing things up. This time he was attempting to fit all of his daughter's toys in a box and rammed his nail right into a sharp edge. It's a frustrating situation and it may inspire Strahm to make some serious real estate reconsiderations.

The lefthander has been a valuable weapon out of the Phillies bullpen during his two years with the team, compiling a 15-7 record and 2.69 ERA over 122 games. He should remain one as long as some sort of unexpected packing-up situation arises before October.

It wouldn’t be hyperbolic to say that Tottenham Hotspur’s season is going off the rails, and fast.

Thomas Frank’s side look a million miles from the one that made a positive start back in August, and following their loss to Fulham on Saturday night, sit tenth in the Premier League.

The North Londoners have become utterly toothless in attack and porous at the back, and they are showing no signs of improving.

Fortunately, reports are now linking Spurs with a player who might be able to help improve the side in both halves of the pitch, someone who’d be a significant upgrade on the increasingly disappointing Rodrigo Bentancur.

While he is far from the only one, Bentancur has been seriously disappointing for Spurs this season, and a million miles from the player fans were excited to watch every week a few years ago.

In short, if it wasn’t already clear last year, this season has made it clear that the Lilywhites need a new midfielder who can help the defence, but also has the power to lend a hand to the attack at times.

Fortunately, it would appear that the club are well aware of this and are looking at a Premier League star who could do just that.

At least that is according to a recent report from Caught Offside, which claims Spurs are now interested in Carlos Baleba.

In fact, the report goes further than that, revealing that the North Londoners have now entered the race for the Brighton & Hove Albion star, who is also a key target for Manchester United.

However, on top of the potential competition, the Cameroonian’s price tag could be a hurdle, with the report stating that the Seagulls still value him at €100m, which is about £88m.

Yet, even though this would be a costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, Baleba’s ability and potential make it one Spurs should pursue, especially as he’d be a huge upgrade on Bentancur.

How Baleba compares to Bentancur

Now, the first thing to say is that, yes, so far this season, Baleba’s form has dropped somewhat.

However, that could be due in part to the transfer saga he went through in the summer, the inconsistent form of Brighton overall, or the simple fact that he is still just 21 years old.

However, even so, the Cameroon international was sensational last season, and a slight dip in form does not take away from the fact that when he is on song, he is incredible to watch.

Moreover, when comparing his underlying numbers to Bentancur’s from last season, even though he is so much younger, he still comes out ahead in most metrics.

For example, when it comes to the attacking side of the game, the Douala-born gem does better in metrics like non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots, key passes, successful take-ons, carries into the final third and more, all per 90.

Impressively, despite tending to start a little deeper than the Uruguayan, the Seagulls star also ranked incredibly closely for goal-creating actions.

Unsurprisingly, he also blows the 28-year-old away when it comes to the defensive side of things, winning more tackles, making more blocks, recovering the ball more often and winning more of his aerial duels, despite being shorter.

With numbers such as these, it’s not hard to see why respected analyst Ben Mattinson described the former LOSC Lille star as “one of the best midfielders in the league” last year.

Finally, on top of clearly outperforming the Lilywhites midfielder when it comes to underlying numbers, another reason Baleba would be an excellent upgrade is that he’s happy playing in central or defensive midfield.

Therefore, he’d be a perfect option for a double pivot, as he could interchange with someone like Lucas Bergvall and, in turn, make life for opposition midfielders far harder.

Ultimately, while it would be an expensive transfer to get over the line, Spurs should do what they can to bring the Brighton ace to N17, as he’d be an excellent addition to the team and an instant upgrade on Bentancur.

Well, that was about as perfect a game as Chelsea are going to have this season.

Following their win over Burnley at the weekend, Enzo Maresca’s side were given the daunting task of hosting Barcelona in the Champions League.

However, instead of wilting under the pressure, the Blues stepped up and completely blew the Spanish giants aside.

From the first minute to the last, Chelsea were exceptional, and there were more than a few standout performers, including Estevao and someone who made light work of what should’ve been a challenging task.

When Chelsea secured the services of Estevao last summer, there was a lot made of the youngster.

In fact, just a few months before that, respected analyst Ben Mattinson had labelled him a “future Ballon d’Or winner.”

Now, while there is still some way to go for that prediction to be proven true, the youngster certainly helped make it look like a good one on Tuesday night.

From practically the first minute until he came off in the 83rd, the 18-year-old was a massive threat, both in terms of his own goalscoring ability and creativity.

He was the scorer of the Blues’ all-important second goal on the night, beating two defenders with some quick feet and firing the ball into the roof of the net.

It means he is now the second-youngest player to score in his first three starts in the competition, after only Kylian Mbappé.

Unsurprisingly, the teenager left quite the impression on the watching press as well, with the Express’ Charlie Griggs awarding him a 9/10 match rating and writing that he ‘led the attacking charge at times.’

Perhaps the best thing that can be said about Estevao’s performance against Barcelona is that he totally outshone the other wonderkid in Lamine Yamal.

Although the Brazilian wasn’t the only Chelsea player to get the better of the young Spaniard.

The brilliant thing for Maresca and Chelsea fans is that you could realistically make the case for any number of their players being the best on the pitch on Tuesday night.

The Spanish full-back was utterly superb against Barcelona, and even though he had the challenging task of trying to stop their free-flowing attack, he didn’t once look flustered.

Moreover, he came out comfortably on top in his duel with Yamal.

In fact, he was so dominant and so on top of the young wonderkid that he was practically anonymous throughout the match, so much so that the Stamford Bridge faithful were safe to openly mock him.

Now, it’s not the first time the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace has locked down a superstar attacker, but given the competition, it’s undoubtedly one of the more high-profile examples.

Understandably then, he also left quite the impression on Griggs, who awarded him a 9/10 match rating at full-time, writing that he ‘locked down the left flank with ease and posed a danger up front.’

That might sound like hyperbole, but the 27-year-old’s statistics prove otherwise.

Ultimately, it was yet another performance that proved Cucurella is one of the best left-backs in the world, and as one content creator said, if he keeps it up, he’s well on his way to becoming “a Chelsea legend.”

Manchester City are now frontrunners in the race to sign a “world-class” £80m star, who Pep Guardiola has called “extraordinary”.

Man City eyeing new forward after Bayer Leverkusen defeat

Guardiola rung the changes on Tuesday evening, making 10 alterations to the side that lost 2-1 at Newcastle United at the weekend, and Bayer Leverkusen made them pay, emerging as 2-0 winners at the Etihad Stadium.

City did manage to create some chances, with Nathan Ake, Savinho and second-half substitute Erling Haaland all squandering big opportunities, but they weren’t clinical enough on the night, and the German side emerged as surprise winners.

Pep would’ve been hoping that his attackers would step up in the absence of Haaland, with Omar Marmoush being given the nod ahead of the Norwegian at centre-forward, but it was a subpar performance from the Egyptian, who received a 6.2 SofaScore match rating, the lowest of any player.

The defeat arguably underlined the need for the Blues to bring in another forward to support Haaland in the January transfer window, and there has now been a positive update on their interest in Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr.

According to a report from Football Insider, Man City are now frontrunners in the race to sign Vinicius, alongside Premier League rivals Chelsea, with the forward’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu in doubt, following a fallout with manager Xabi Alonso.

Talks over a contract extension have stalled, meaning the Brazilian could be set to depart the Spanish club, and City would have the financial muscle to get a deal over the line, with his current employers looking to receive £80m.

Should Madrid decide to cash-in this summer, with the 25-year-old’s current deal set to expire in 2027, a number of Saudi Pro League clubs would also join the Blues in the race, so there could be stiff competition for his signature.
