Mandhana shuns the spotlight as 'Queens 2024' party at the Kotla

For a while, it looked like it would be Delhi Capitals’ night, but smart captaincy and exceptional spin bowling turned the game RCB’s way

Mandhana lauds RCB’s fighting spirit and belief

Smriti Mandhana wasn’t there. After Richa Ghosh hit the winning runs, all the Royal Challengers Bangalore players rushed onto the field. They had finished fourth in the inaugural edition last year, and now they had won the WPL title by beating Delhi Capitals – who had an all-win record against them and had directly made the final. RCB had made it to the playoffs only after winning their last league game and finishing third. And add to it the running joke about RCB never quite winning anything. And so, the joy the players felt – and displayed – was completely warranted, with over 29,000 cheering them on at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Shreyanka Patil led the way. Among the first to reach Ghosh in the middle, hugging every member of the RCB contingent, giving a sassy interview – “They keep saying, [this year the cup is ours]’, look we got the cup so… that’s it, guys!” – and just dancing the moment away before and after the presentation and in front of the cutout that said “QUEENS 2024”.Related

Perry and spinners steer RCB to WPL title

It was only fitting – Ghosh and Patil had broken down on the pitch exactly a week ago after a heart-wrenching one-run loss against Capitals. But Mandhana was almost subdued. She was the last to walk out even as the entire bunch jumped around in the middle after the eight-wicket win. The joy on her face was visible – but nowhere close to overflowing – as she slowly made her way to the middle. She first gave a warm hug to Capitals allrounder Arundhati Reddy, off whom the winning runs were hit. After a few handshakes, she hugged and lifted Ellyse Perry, who saw off the chase with an unbeaten 35, off the ground. But a few moments later, Mandhana was gone again. She was neither in the middle where a group of RCB players were dancing nor in another group that was laughing and chatting with the team owners. And not even among the players celebrating with members of the support staff.About ten minutes later, she emerged from the dressing room and joined her team-mates.”The first thing I did was I went to the dressing room and sat,” Mandhana explained in the press conference later. “It’s hard to celebrate the way others do. I don’t know, there’s some defect.”

The smiles did not seem probable for RCB about three hours earlier. Capitals opted to bat – like has been the norm in the Delhi leg of WPL 2024 – and were off to a flier, courtesy Shafali Verma. She gave the RCB bowlers a shellacking in the powerplay, hitting sixes off Sophie Molineux, Renuka Singh and Perry. Shafali had an answer to whatever came her way. The result? Capitals were 61 for no loss in six overs, their second-highest in the phase in the two seasons of the competition.Mandhana then brought back Molineux, who had given away ten runs in the second over of the match. The move paid dividends immediately. Molineux tossed one above Shafali’s eyeline and she slogged it straight to deep midwicket. She then struck twice in two balls, bowling both Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey for ducks, a jolt Capitals could never recover from.Sophie Molineux, back after an injury layoff, did the star turn for RCB with the ball in the final•BCCIWith the initial damage done, Mandhana brought Patil into the attack, and she responded by dismissing Meg Lanning for the second time in two games. Patil and Asha Sobhana continued what Molineux had started as Capitals lost nine of their ten wickets to spin. From 64 for none, they lost ten wickets for just 49 to be skittled for 113.Little would have pleased the RCB management more than Molineux’s returns in WPL 2024. The punt they took in picking her at the auction paid off as she returned 12 wickets at an economy rate of 7.31, bowling a majority of her overs in the powerplay and at the death. She was RCB’s joint-second highest wicket-taker, that too after coming in on the back of an ACL injury that had kept her out of action for a large part of two years.”We’ve been following her for a very long time,” Mandhana said. “I remember her bowling against us in the one-day series [in 2021], which we nearly won when we went to Australia. I think she was the difference between the Australian team and the Indian team and, at that time, the way she bowled in the last four-five overs, it always stuck with me somehow – her performance.”The last two years have been really tough on her with a few injuries. She went through ACL and I can feel that ACL pain [having gone through it myself], so really, really happy for her. The way she came back – she was really clear. Not only today but even in the eliminator, to [bowl] that kind of a 19th over [four runs and a wicket against Mumbai Indians]. So, really, really happy for her and I think she is definitely a special player.”The party begins…•BCCIThe series in 2021 was also one where Molineux broke her jaw after being struck by a throw in the third ODI. She had continued playing. Time and again, her resilience and clutch performances have come to the fore, and with the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh on the horizon, she is also back in Australia’s white-ball squads.”This one’s special – to be taken by RCB after not playing any cricket for a while was pretty special,” Molineux said after being named Player of the Match. “I felt like I was bowling really slow tonight. I got a bit quick throughout the tournament. I suppose that is tournament play – you have to keep learning from the innings and the mistakes that you make before that and look forward to the next game.”And it was Molineux’s triple-wicket over that denied an Australian captain and ensured an Indian captain lifts the trophy again. After she received the WPL trophy, Mandhana passed it to the young brigade led by Patil, and quietly slipped to the back of the group on the left. Quiet. Almost vanishing again.Smriti Mandhana’s bowling changes worked perfectly•AFP/Getty Images… ‘I didn’t hear anything’ of what Virat Kohli saidBut her glee was on full display at the press conference after the final, and everyone present got to see a side of Mandhana even she may not have known existed. She is not usually too expressive in public. She had said so herself after the league stage. And we believed her. Here, she barely finished the first answer when she was she told to pause. A formally dressed gentleman wearing white gloves appeared and placed the WPL trophy next to her.”Oooooh,” Mandhana went. “I have to leave my shyness now.””Okay, sorry,” she said as she pulled herself together, but the laughs and giggles didn’t go away. Nor did her awkwardness at being in the situation she was in. ” [why did you bring this]?” she asked the gentleman while pointing to the trophy. An answer or two later, the gentleman returned to take the trophy away.” (Done, taking it already)?” she chuckled. When she was told the trophy had to be adjusted a little for the video being recorded, she said, ” (I thought you’re taking it back).” Mandhana found her own joke funny enough to burst into another spell of laughter.3:00

RCB take home the trophy

On being asked about the conversation with Virat Kohli on a video call moments after the final ended, Mandhana said, “I didn’t hear anything what he was saying because it was too loud.”Cue laughter from all those gathered.”No, I’m not saying I didn’t [care to] hear what he said, I’m saying I couldn’t hear. What you’re laughing? Don’t take it the wrong way .” More laughter. “As I said, I couldn’t hear what he was saying because of the noise. Hans rahe hain yaar ye log, marwayenge [these people are laughing, they’ll get me in trouble].”There were also serious and insightful answers from Mandhana to explain her emotions, what a ride the two WPLs have been, what a find Shreyanka Patil is, and more. Almost all of it was sprinkled liberally with – you guessed it – her never-seen-before sense of humour.Right at the end, she was asked whether her 31 off 39 to steer the RCB chase would make her think of adopting a similar approach for India at times to close out more games, and she interrupted to ask, “Is she [the journalist in question] telling me or asking me?” to draw more laughs from her audience.Mandhana was high. She was high on her win, on holding the big golden trophy, and the sweet taste of success after a bitter baptism in the WPL last year. It was the night of her life. And the next time she says she doesn’t show her emotions, just remind her of this Sunday night.

The World Cup showed that Associates have not kept up in T20 – because they're playing too few games

The pandemic is partly to blame, but what they really need to raise their level is many more fixtures

Tim Wigmore18-Nov-2021T20 is cricket’s globalisation tool, as the ICC endlessly reminds us. The 2021 World Cup has not given reason to reassess that view, but for advocates of cricket’s expansionism, the Associates’ performances in the tournament have been a little disconcerting.Ultimately the best day for the emerging world was the tournament’s very first, when Scotland recovered from 53 for 6 to defeat Bangladesh by six runs in Muscat. The only other Associate scalp against a Full Member came when Namibia defeated Ireland to progress to the Super 12s. The closest that Scotland or Namibia got to a victory in their eight games against Full Members in that stage of the tournament was Scotland’s 16-run defeat to New Zealand. These performances amount to a regression from the Associates’ displays in the 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups. In the first round of the 2014 tournament, Hong Kong defeated Bangladesh and Ireland beat Zimbabwe. Then, in the second round, Netherlands thrashed England by 45 runs and lost by only six runs to South Africa. Two years later, Afghanistan easily beat Zimbabwe to reach the Super 10s. There, they beat eventual winners West Indies, and had England at 57 for 6, before losing by 15 runs.Related

Associate nations have been more greatly impacted by Covid-19 than anyone else in elite cricket. Most Associates essentially played no international matches for 18 months until September this year. Scotland, often considered the leading Associate, put their players on furlough to save money; Chris Greaves, the Player of the Match against Bangladesh in the 2021 World Cup, spent the start of the year delivering parcels for Amazon. Nearly two months of playing in the UAE was particularly challenging for many of these players, who had never experienced intensive bubble life like this before. While these short-term encumbrances explain emerging nations’ challenges this year, there are other forces at work. The greatest is simply the evolution of T20. Since the last World Cup, there have been six editions of the IPL, but Associate players rarely feature in the league, and have scant experience in other major franchise tournaments.Even allowing for the profound difficulties caused by the pandemic, Associates are better T20 sides than five years ago. The problem is, so are the teams ranked above them. From 2010-15, the nine leading Full Members – those part of the World Test Championship – played 2.6 ODIs for every T20I. Since 2016, they have played only 1.2 ODIs for every T20I.In T20 World Cups, Associate teams used to have a curious advantage. They had greater knowledge about their opponents, because while video footage and data from games between Test teams was readily accessible, information about the Associate world was comparatively hard to find. In this World Cup, the sight of two fielders routinely placed to protect the boundary from George Munsey’s reverse sweeps attests to how Test teams have become shrewder in their planning against Associates. But the biggest issue for Associate teams is simply their paucity of fixtures compared to Test sides.Hong Kong beat Bangladesh by two wickets in their 2014 T20 World Cup match in Chattogram•Associated PressThe same was long true in ODIs before the Cricket World Cup League 2 guaranteed leading Associates 36 ODIs between the 2019 and 2023 World Cups. The upshot is that the gulf in playing experience between emerging nations and Full Members is now greater in T20 than 50-over cricket.Leading T20 players play around 50 matches a year, spread across international cricket and leagues. Between the World Cup qualifiers in 2019 and the 2021 World Cup, Namibia’s captain, Gerhard Erasmus, only played 11 T20s, and Kyle Coetzer, Scotland’s captain, five.Ostensibly T20 is the format best suited to emerging sides, but the assumption that this is automatically true is a lazy one. Ireland have defeated both England and South Africa in the ODI Super League, but the World Cup has highlighted that their T20I side is altogether less advanced.Scotland’s run in ODI cricket in 2017-18, when they defeated England, Afghanistan and came within six runs of defeating West Indies and nearly qualifying for the 2019 World Cup, exceeds any streak they have put together against top ten nations in T20I cricket. And so the T20 World Cup results should prompt serious thought about how to close the gap between emerging nations and leading Full Members in the format. More bilateral matches between Test teams and Associates would obviously help; how to fit them into the calendar is another matter.Creative thinking could help accelerate Associates’ T20 development. In women’s cricket, the ICC has previously funded contracts for Associate players in the Women’s Big Bash. A partnership that allowed, say, 20 leading Associate players to train with teams in the IPL and Big Bash would help them tap into the networks, knowledge-sharing and cutting-edge thinking happening in the format. Including Associates in domestic T20 competitions, like the T20 Blast and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and giving them more cricket against A teams from leading nations would be a boon. All of this will require goodwill from Full Members – and extra funding during the 2024-31 ICC cycle. From 2024, the men’s T20 World Cup will expand to 20 teams, with the unwieldy first round abolished. For the first time in history, cricket will get a World Cup that, in its scope, will feel like a global affair to rival those in football or basketball. It is an unprecedented opportunity to turbocharge cricket’s growth. But the events of the last month in the UAE should serve as a reminder. More teams in the World Cup may be necessary to globalise the sport, yet what happens between World Cups is just as important.

Just like Romero: Spurs prepare £40m bid for “crazy” Van de Ven upgrade

Thomas Frank is clearly a clever man. The Tottenham Hotspur manager is a bona fide tactician, and he has credentials in the Premier League after lifting Brentford into the top flight and keeping them there with a flourish.

But the Danish coach’s skills haven’t yet translated to Tottenham, not in the same manner, not with the same snap and grace.

Tottenham are 11th in the league standings, and they have two points from their past five matches. Home ground misery has spilt from last season into the new campaign, and this is forming the crux of a general air of frustration that may threaten Frank’s tenure if he does not find a solution quickly.

Much has been made of the north Londoners’ creative problems this season, but Frank’s resilient and organised defensive structure is also leaving something to be desired, prompting Johan Lange and Fabio Paratici to start searching for reinforcements.

Spurs searching for a defender

Frank’s well-ordered system lends itself to stability in the Premier League. He is not known as an attack-centric coach, but the rises of Bryan Mbeumo, Ivan Toney and Yoane Wissa bear testament to his man-management skills and tactical expertise across the board.

But it’s clear that Tottenham need more high-quality depth at the rear, with questionable recruitment in recent years leading to a lopsided outfit that quite simply doesn’t boast the wider quality to challenge at the very top of the division.

Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are talented centre-halves, but the pool is shallow beneath them, and that’s why Tottenham are gearing up for a winter raid on a Premier League rival.

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham are preparing an ambitious £40m bid for Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke, who has been among the standouts for Fabian Hurzeler this season.

The Dutchman is physical and technically dynamic, and given that he is contracted to the AMEX until 2027, now represents the perfect time to strike.

What Van Hecke would offer Spurs

Van Hecke, 25 years old, has been at Brighton since signing from NAC Breda in 2022, spending his first two years out on loan and since featuring 107 times across all competitions. He was immense last term, earning praise for his “unbelievable season” from his manager.

You may have seen Van Hecke’s name crop up in recent days. He netted a brace during Brighton’s frantic 4-3 defeat to winning machine Aston Villa, emulating both Romero and Van de Ven in that regard.

Standing at 6 foot 2 and with a limber frame, the Netherlands native is fast becoming one of the most dynamic and athletic centre-backs in the Premier League, ranking among the top 5% of positional peers in the division this season for goals scored, the top 21% for shot-creating actions, the top 3% for progressive passes and the top 1% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

This underscores both his athleticism and proactivity on the ball. In this, he shares traits with Romero, who has scored three times but also assisted two goals across all competitions this year.

But the central point here is that Van Hecke is good enough to start; he would not move to the capital and play under Frank only to languish on the fringes.

Romero is the captain and a real talismanic force for a squad in need of guidance, but given Van Hecke’s enterprising passing and willingness to run, might he threaten countryman Van de Ven’s place in the starting line-up?

Van de Ven simply isn’t winning enough duels this season. He is an elite athletic profile and a force to be reckoned with, but there is gas in the tank he is not burning right now, and a true challenger for his starting spot could jumpstart him into action.

Then again, Van Hecke does have the quality to nail down a berth, with former striker Pierre van Hooijdonk actually describing him as a “positively crazy” defender, something that can work in your favour as a centre-back, if harnessed effectively.

This Romero-esque player could prove a jackpot signing for Tottenham if signed, not only deepening Frank’s options but also enriching the quality of a team that has more to give.

Nuno now ready to launch £8m West Ham move to sign "outstanding" set-piece specialist

Nuno Espirito Santo is now reportedly ready to launch his first transfer move in charge of West Ham United to sign Bristol City’s set-piece specialist Scott Twine.

The Hammers could certainly do with a busy January transfer window. Whilst results have improved recently, their 2-2 draw against Bournemouth in a game that they led 2-0 exposed their problems once again.

After watching on as his side let go of their 2-0 lead gained through Callum Wilson’s goals, Nuno told reporters: “It’s a very tough place to come. The first half was us – we took advantage of the straight ball, of the second ball, we managed the tempo of the game, we managed to control Bournemouth, and we achieved a good lead.

“In the second half, Bournemouth did exactly the same that we did [in the first]. They managed better the circumstances of the game, we couldn’t go out, they put us against the ropes, they engaged five players in the last line.

“The boys were organised but were missing the pass to go out of pressure, to really hurt them with space, under tough circumstances. But the positive is that I think the team was resilient, was organised, was compact and was really committed.”

After the dramatic draw, West Ham have at least escaped the dropzone, albeit only on goal difference. With the visit of Liverpool up next, they’ll be hoping to compile the champions’ recent misery and escape the relegation zone in the process.

It goes without saying that the January transfer window would be a lot easier if West Ham were approaching it without the bottom three in mind. It would hand Nuno the perfect opportunity to welcome first-choice reinforcements and potentially take the Hammers onwards and upwards.

On that front, the former Nottingham Forest manager already has certain additions in mind, according to reports.

West Ham and Nuno ready to launch Scott Twine move

According to Sports Boom, Nuno is now ready to launch West Ham’s move to sign Twine from Bristol City in the January transfer window. The set-piece specialist would be an instant upgrade on James Ward-Prowse, who has been frozen out by Nuno, and would cost West Ham just £8m.

Although it is in a league below the Premier League, Twine has shown plenty of promise compared to Lucas Paqueta this season. Based on those numbers, £8m could quickly turn into a bargain for the London club.

Whether Bristol City allow one of their key men to leave so easily remains to be seen, however. Robins manager Gerhard Struber recently praised his midfielder – telling reporters: “Scott (has) outstanding technical power with his monster leg.

“It helped us to score in this way but I like his energy at the moment – his work ethic on the field to invest everything. As good as Estevao: £60m star is on his way to becoming "a Chelsea legend"

Well, that was about as perfect a game as Chelsea are going to have this season.

Following their win over Burnley at the weekend, Enzo Maresca’s side were given the daunting task of hosting Barcelona in the Champions League.

However, instead of wilting under the pressure, the Blues stepped up and completely blew the Spanish giants aside.

From the first minute to the last, Chelsea were exceptional, and there were more than a few standout performers, including Estevao and someone who made light work of what should’ve been a challenging task.

Estevao's magical night vs Barcelona

When Chelsea secured the services of Estevao last summer, there was a lot made of the youngster.

In fact, just a few months before that, respected analyst Ben Mattinson had labelled him a “future Ballon d’Or winner.”

Now, while there is still some way to go for that prediction to be proven true, the youngster certainly helped make it look like a good one on Tuesday night.

From practically the first minute until he came off in the 83rd, the 18-year-old was a massive threat, both in terms of his own goalscoring ability and creativity.

He was the scorer of the Blues’ all-important second goal on the night, beating two defenders with some quick feet and firing the ball into the roof of the net.

It means he is now the second-youngest player to score in his first three starts in the competition, after only Kylian Mbappé.

Unsurprisingly, the teenager left quite the impression on the watching press as well, with the Express’ Charlie Griggs awarding him a 9/10 match rating and writing that he ‘led the attacking charge at times.’

Perhaps the best thing that can be said about Estevao’s performance against Barcelona is that he totally outshone the other wonderkid in Lamine Yamal.

Although the Brazilian wasn’t the only Chelsea player to get the better of the young Spaniard.

Chelsea's other standout star vs Barcelona

The brilliant thing for Maresca and Chelsea fans is that you could realistically make the case for any number of their players being the best on the pitch on Tuesday night.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, when it comes to the starter who really shone, potentially even more so than Estevao, it’s hard to look past Marc Cucurella.

The Spanish full-back was utterly superb against Barcelona, and even though he had the challenging task of trying to stop their free-flowing attack, he didn’t once look flustered.

Moreover, he came out comfortably on top in his duel with Yamal.

In fact, he was so dominant and so on top of the young wonderkid that he was practically anonymous throughout the match, so much so that the Stamford Bridge faithful were safe to openly mock him.

Now, it’s not the first time the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace has locked down a superstar attacker, but given the competition, it’s undoubtedly one of the more high-profile examples.

Understandably then, he also left quite the impression on Griggs, who awarded him a 9/10 match rating at full-time, writing that he ‘locked down the left flank with ease and posed a danger up front.’

That might sound like hyperbole, but the 27-year-old’s statistics prove otherwise.

Ultimately, it was yet another performance that proved Cucurella is one of the best left-backs in the world, and as one content creator said, if he keeps it up, he’s well on his way to becoming “a Chelsea legend.”

Mariners' J.P. Crawford Loses the Closest Ball-Strike Challenge Yet

MLB's new ball-strike challenge system can't get much closer than this.

During a matchup between the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Guardians on Monday, Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford struck out looking on a high slider from Emmanuel Clase. Crawford didn't agree with the call and challenged it using MLB's experimental ABS system. The result was remarkable.

That is as close as you can get to being a ball while still being in the strike zone. It genuinely scrapes the top of the zone by a matter of millimeters.

Still, despite Crawford's disappointment, it appears the ABS challenge system has been a wild success during spring training. The players have adapted quickly, as have the umpires and fans appreciate that bad calls are being corrected.

Hampshire have brought in Chris Lynn and Hilton Cartwright as overseas reinforcements in their bid to become the first team to win the men’s T20 Blast four times.Lynn and Cartwright will replace Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Dewald Brevis for the second half of the Blast’s group stage, who both made their Test debuts for South Africa in Zimbabwe last week. Tilak Varma, who has been playing for Hampshire in the County Championship, is not allowed to play in the Blast due to the BCCI’s policy on No-Objection Certificates.Lynn, the all-time leading run-scorer in Australia’s BBL, has previously played two seasons for Northamptonshire in the Blast, where he averaged 44 and scored three centuries. As a teenager, he spent an Australian winter playing club cricket in Hampshire for Gosport Borough, near Portsmouth.”It’s great to return to Hampshire, this time as a pro; I had a brilliant time playing club cricket in the county a while ago now,” Lynn said. “The Hawks are a hugely successful side and hopefully I can play a big part in the second half of the Blast to take the team to Finals Day.”Cartwright, 33, has previously played for Middlesex and Derbyshire in the Blast, and spent one season with Oval Invincibles in the Hundred. “It’s great to sign for the Hawks for the back end of the Blast and join up with Chris Lynn,” he said. “I’ve had some great battles with him on the cricket field. I hope I can make this stint a memorable one and get the team in a great spot to get to Finals Day come September.”Hampshire sit sixth in the South Group, with six matches remaining to secure a top-four berth. Brevis and Pretorius both made an impact, averaging in the 30s while striking at 181 and 140 respectively, but James Vince, their captain, has had an uncharacteristically quiet season with 193 runs in eight innings.Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, said: “We are delighted to have Chris with us for the back half of the Blast. We’ve got some important games ahead of us and his experience and explosive batting gives us a big boost… It’s great to welcome Hilton to the club for the remaining Blast games. He’s a dynamic cricketer and will be a great addition to the team as we push for the knockout stages.”

Here is a detailed look at Wolves' 10 record departures… 10 Fabio Silva £19.5m to Borussia Dortmund, 2025

Wolves actually broke their transfer record at the time to sign Fabio Silva from FC Porto as a teenager, with the forward costing the club more than £35m.

Unfortunately for the Old Gold and Silva, things never clicked in the Midlands, with Silva being loaned out to four different clubs before Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund came in with a permanent £19.5m deal in 2025.

9 Nathan Collins £23m to Brentford, 2023

Nathan Collins’ time at Molineux was short-lived, only spending one full season with Wolves before being sold to Brentford in 2023.

The Republic of Ireland international joined the Bees for what was a club-record £23m, which resulted in Wolves making a £3m profit.

8 Morgan Gibbs-White £25m to Nottingham Forest, 2022

Attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White came through the Wolves academy and spent a number of years in the senior side at Molineux before his move to Nottingham Forest in 2022.

The Reds paid an initial £25m for Gibbs-White, although a further £17.5m could be paid in performance and appearance-related add-ons.

7 Rayan Ait-Nouri £31m to Man City, 2025

Rayan Ait-Nouri went from strength to strength during his five-year stay at Molineux, making his move permanent from French side Angers in 2021 following a successful loan spell.

The left-back made more than 150 appearances for Wolves and got the eye of Pep Guardiola and Man City in 2025, who paid just over £30m to sign the Algerian.

6 Diogo Jota £40m to Liverpool, 2020

It’s scary to think that Diogo Jota played for Wolves in the Championship and was a key member of the side that won promotion in 2018.

The Portugal international’s initial loan move to Molineux became permanent while still in the second tier, and after three years in the Midlands, Liverpool came calling in 2020 and paid £40m for the attacker. Tragically, the forward died in a car crash in 2025.

5 Max Kilman £40m to West Ham, 2024

Centre-back Max Kilman reunited with former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui in 2024 when he moved to West Ham in a £40m transfer.

Things didn’t work out for Lopetegui, who was sacked by the Hammers, while Kilman, who spent six seasons at Molineux, signed a seven-year contract with West Ham.

4 Ruben Neves £47m to Al-Hilal, 2023

Ruben Neves swapped the Champions League for the Championship when signing for Wolves in 2017, and he would go on to make more than 250 appearances for the Old Gold.

Regularly linked with moves away from Molineux, Neves eventually swapped the Midlands for Saudi Arabia, with Al-Hilal paying £47m for the Portugal international in 2023.

3 Pedro Neto £51.3m to Chelsea, 2024

Another Portuguese star who lit up Molineux was winger Pedro Neto. He had his injury issues, though, making 135 appearances in five full seasons.

Chelsea weren’t put off by Neto’s injury history and spent more than £50m on the attacker in 2024, with the wide forward penning a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

2 Matheus Nunes £53m to Man City, 2023

Matheus Nunes was Wolves’ most expensive departure for two years following his £53m move to Manchester City in 2023.

The midfielder starred in his only campaign at Molineux after joining from Sporting CP, so much so that those at the Etihad improved their initial offer and secured Nunes to a five-year deal.

1 Matheus Cunha £62.5m to Man Utd

Another Matheus tops the list in forward Matheus Cunha, who also headed to Manchester, this time to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were on the search for a new marquee attacker, and following Cunha’s excellent campaigns at Molineux, decided to trigger his £62.5m release clause. The Brazilian left the Midlands after scoring 33 goals in 92 games.
